City streets will often be crowded and narrow. Peace and tranquillity wlll be ours when we travel down country roads. All of these paths we take will lead us into new experiences. Each one will help us find our direction in life. Zi ' 7' 1 N ' . 5:-Q , . Il., ug. E I A -A yi v 5:3 A X . fi 9 ' Hi 45 W7 ' an , ww AG f , ' by 1 1, l X V .Q X fe: M, J '5-A ,uw . 1' z . 1? The Lithonia community reflects our lives, our beliefs and our feelings Here we learn to understand and accept our fellow men - those who are different yet who all have one common element, those who share and join hands with us towards a better society. Here we venture one step further towards our destination. Our environment plays an important role in our every day lives. The world is a re- volving display of the many problems, decisions, and struggles which make up our lives. Each minute of every day an important event is taking place. The kidnapping of James Hoffa, the Patty Hearst story, a new life for Nixon, the arrival of Vietnamese refugees, assassination at- tempts on President Ford's life - these are only a few of the events which have occurred across the nation. 10 11 W 1 fb, 's .P , 1' Wm, +5 W, 7 'ES ' J Xl G' 'J if .was sfi Wi 1 1' , QA as Q Q r i M, -nl .av ' V . Our road may form valleys, hills, rocks and holes but we still look forward. We appreciate the good times because we do experience the bad. We learn to love because we have seen hate. O'Rourke THOIVIAS J. O'ROURKE, Lithonia High's past Assistant Principal, now has a new job, a job that he has more than satisfactorily filled. His new job is the Principal of Lithonia High School. After graduating in'1967 from IVlorehead State University in Kentucky, lVlr. O'Rourke con- tinued his education by obtaining his lVlaster's Degree from Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. From there, he received a Six Year Certificate from the University of Georgia. Since moving to Georgia, IVlr. O'Rourke has worked in the DeKalb County School System for seven years lone year at Gordon, one year at Walker, and five years ere at L. H. S. I Concerning his new position, lVlr. O'Rourke had many interesting things to say. There's a lot more responsi- bility tothe position, he said. He also commented that when he was Assistant Principal, he always' hfad to answer to the Principal, but now, it is his concern and responsi- bility to answer to himself. When asked what had been done to make the school better, he replied, Well, I made IVlr. Bailey' my Assistant Principal, and in the area of discipline he has certainly been a help. Equally important, he said, I've appointed IVIr. lVlason Assistant Principal in charge of in- struction, and we've made a lot of efforts to improve our instructional program. IVIr. lVlason has done a lot of work in this area. Also in the area of betterment tothe school, lVlr. O'Rourke said, This year we have had the 'beat Band, grill Team, and Cheerleaders that we've ever a at L. H. . IVIr. O'Rourke stated, I think the student body at L.H.S. is one of the best student bodies in DeKalb' County. I have been disappointed sometimes, but most of the time I am very pleased with the students here and I look for- ward to having continued success. IVIr. O'Rourke's favorite forms of entertainment in- clude going to football and basketball games, playing golf and running. His three children, two daughters and a son, take up much of his time. He also enjoys dancing and listening to music. We, the students of L.H.S. , wish to give thanks to lVlr. .O'Rourke for being the great Principal he is, and to sincerely hope that he has continued success. ..-..-auwlilkf MR. ROY BAILEY, Assistant Principal of Discipline and Maintenancehere at L.H.S. , has been working with the DeKalb County School System for eighteen years, sall of which have been spent at L.H.S. After graduating from Hewitt High School, he went on to obtain his .B.S. Degree from Jackson- ville State University and his M.Ed. Degree from West Georgia College. After coming to Lithonia, Mr. Bailey did further graduate work at University of Georgia, Oglethorpe University and Georgia State University. A . During Mr. Bailey's high school days, while he was playing football, his coach gave him the nick- name Bull. This name has lingered with Mr. Bailey since that time. His friends still call him Bull Bailey because some say he shoots the breeze. Mr. Bailey's new job deals mainly with discipline of the students. He does not enjoy giving disciplinary action at all, but he states that it's a necessary evil. When not at school, Mr. Bailey spends his spare time enjoying outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, and skiing. He also enjoys watching T.V. and good movies. Mr. Bailey has a high opinion of the student body and says he enjoys working with them. He seems to be first-rate in his new position. MR. CHARLES MASON is Lithonia High's new Assistant Principal of Instruction and Attendance. He obtained his A. B. Degree from Western Kentucky University and his M.A.T. Degree from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Mason has also taken Administra- tive courses through the University of Georgia. He has been associated with the DeKalb County School System for five years, four of which he spent teaching English here at Lithonia High. Mr. Mason's new job consists of working with the teachers to improve the quality of instruction in the classroom and of being in charge of the at- tendance office. Working with Mr. Bailey on some matters, Mr. Mason handles skipping which, he says, is a minor problem here at Lithonia. Many extracurricular activities which hold his interests are reading novels, playing tennis, and especially studying politics, which happens to hold a tremendous interest in his life. Finally, when asked what he did with his spare time, Mr. Mason replied, What you're doing is not as important as who you're with. As time goes on, we sincerely hope that Mr. Mason's philosophy continues to hold true, and that his new job as Assistant Principal of Instruction will prove beneficial to the students of L.H.S. 1 Counselors IVIrs. Cole, lVlr. Brown and lVlrs. Overton are the hard working counselors of Lithonia High School They are concerned with the placement of students so the students can have adequate preparation for whatever lies ahead. The counselors are always available to help students discover their talents and their abilities and are there to discuss the student's problems. Media Center 1975-1976 is the first entire school year the Media Center has operated at Lithonia. It is a very roomy place, contains many interesting Fiction and Non-Fiction books, and has a great variety of magazines ranging from POPULAR MECHANICS to EBONY to NEWSWEEK. Studying is easier with the aid of the working tables and the carrels. The wide selection of reference materials also aids in one's assignments. All in all, the lVledia Center offers something to everyone, whether it be magazines, books, or resting one's mind English The English Department of L .H .S., the largest and sometimes the most rewarding, is greatly appreciated . The Foreign Language courses offered are German, French, Latin, and Spanish. Aside from learning the spoken and written language, the students learn the culture, customs, and folklore of the various countries. The teachers are aided by language carrels which are equipped with earphones, tapes, recorders and records. Here at Lithonia, our suppor- tive services are taken very seriously and are given much time and effort. Every day of the week, our special teachers guide and direct many students at Lithonia. The stu- dents are taught math, science, social studies, and English. Our teachers in Supportive Services are specially trained to develop varied and interesting activities for the hard-working students. Thanks goes to these special teachers for their time, effort, and caring. Social Studies Although some students may think that Social Studies is unimportant, much of our lives is occupied in some way or another by this subject. A student spends almost as many years studying Social Studies as he does English. IVluch can be gained from history, geography, economics, political science, and sociology, all part of the Socia Studies department of LHS. The Social Studies teachers have helped us to understand better the past and the present, and t1ey have helped to direct us in making our decisions for the future. ,E , Em: E, l , ,s Eg, ,Bt Amer. There are two ways to look at the Science Department. On one hand, science means hard work, long, complicated tests, and memorization. On the other hand, science means the excitement of experimentation in labs, of biological dissection, of learning how to operate new scientific equipment, and of studying the history and physiology of the human anatomy. lVlost students prefer to enjoy science rather than to dislike it. So, it is for this reason that we, the students of LHS, wish to thank all the science teachers for their time and especially for their efforts. . ls . atk, , .. , fly 5 L. Working every day, the students who are divided into various choirs perfected songs and musicals, which they performed throughout the year. While these chorus students worked hard, an- other class, newly formed at L. H.S. this yea was busy at work. The Folk Guitar class gives students the opportunity to express themselves by playing folk songs on the gui- tar. All of the students in the Choral Department deserve a pat on the back for their hard work. We are proud of all our future Streisands and Sinatras! BAND Many people like to express themselves by playing a musical instrument or by composing music. These reasons explain why students here at LHS enjoy being a part of the band. The members of the band have a chance to participate in various activities such as arranging and performing half-time shows at foot- ball games, going to spring festivals, and performing concerts for the students and parents of the community. Also, at LHS this year, students have been given a chance to participate in a newly organized string instrument orchestra class. The boys to this time show signs of leadership, closeness among the players, and a one for all attitude. This is not a team of superstars but a team of average players who are deter- mined to leave their name carved in the rich tradition of LHS basketball. This year's Varsity Basketball team was an exceptional team. After losing five of last year's starters, many were skeptical as to how the young team would per- form. Their doubts vanished, however, as the 1975-1976 team dribbled their way through the season. They won the support of their Lithonia fans and closed the season with a successful record. ' 45 Z 54 Spirit and pride--those are what the 1975-1976 Bulldogs were made of. Although their season wasn't as was hoped it would be thev still came out on top of the charts. The highest scorer of the 1975-1976 season was Lorenzo Sadler. He averaged 23.6 points a game The next highest scorer was Arthur Lee Johnson who aver aged 10 1 points a game Five young men graduated from the 1976 Bulldog team this year Mark Broughton, Johnny Bruce Frank Champion Arthur Lee Johnson and Lorenzo Saddler The Annual Staff would like to congratulate the whole team for a tremendous job I in tr 3 l T an if 5 FRONT TO BACK, LEFT TO RIGHT: P. In earlier years girls have not always been recognized as outstanding athletes. Much has changed since, especially at Lithonia. When describing girls' Varsity Basketball at our school, the words determi- nation, might, practice, more practice and in the end, vic- tory, come to mind. Our girls work hard along with the leadership of Coach Billie Roberts. The 1975-1976 team showed much quality, as has been and will continue to be a tradition at Lithonia. Though lacking height, they made up for it with hustle and determination. Learning from each opponent they faced, the B-Team play- ers grew closer to the image of the Varsity Bulldogs. The dogs' season started off a little slow, but as the year progressed it proved to be a season of much reward and learning. As the band played, the drill team and majorettes performed for the onlooking audience. There were many sights to be seen such as clowns, homecoming court, cheerleaders, football players, and floats. The theme of the winning float, created by the Junior Class, was Shave the Eagles . Runners- up were: lst runner up-Sub-Freshmen, 2nd runner up-Seniors, and 3rd runner up-Sophomores. Varsity Cheerleaders IVlost girls at Lithonia High would cringe at the thought of wearing the same outfit on the same day. But believe it or not, there is a group of girls at L.H.S. who would be upset if they weren't wearing the same outfit. THE LITHONIA HIGH SCHGOL VARSITY CHEERLEADERS are noted for decorating halls, organizing pep rallies, and boosting school spirit. This year their captain, Wendy Norris, was chosen Georgia All-Star Cheer- leader. The cheerleaders attended camp during the summer at Auburn Univer- sity. There, they received a first place trophy for their superior performance. These girls are all-stars at Lithonia High all year long. We salute our 1975- 76 Varsity Cheerleaders. 86 I W.. ., , P w ,I If 3' wx, EY Q' 35 if f T I if fl e x s Q F . ,F Nxt . ii if K M ,, -9 61.2 25395 S15 X Xs wa x ,fm if NS ,X , 3 xv W 35 K S N uk X N w X 935 Q. The eighth grade cheerleaders at Lithonia High School have spent a busy year learn- ing the fundamentals of leadership and sportsmanship. They have learned to back their team win or lose. But most of all, they have learned there is a great deal more to cheerleading than just yelling. i W . 5 3 ,., Wi R Band band 1 Cbandl n. 2. a group of musicians playing various instruments together, especially one that plays wind and percussion instruments only and performs chiefly out of doors. The camp lasted one week and was sponsored by the National Drill Team Association. The drill team was complimented on becoming the most improved team throughout the week. When school began in August, practice was held everyday after school until as late as 6:00. The girls worked hard during the week in order to prepare the routines for the half-time show. The routines consisted of a variety of props such as flags, pompoms, and stools. lVluch appreciation should be given to Captain, Pat Hightower, Co-captain, Laura Thomas, and Lieu- tenants, Cecilia Sawyer and Carol Waites. Her fellow officers were Vice-President- Lisa lVIanos, Secretary-Ce- cilia Sawyer, and Treasurer- Mark Daniel. The council began the 1975 -76 school term by showing the eighth graders around school on orientation night. Some other activities sponsored by the stu- dent government during the year were the Z-93 Spirit Contest, Toys for Tots, the Empty Stocking Fund, and the Walk for Nlankind. The biggest event sponsored by the council was the homecoming festivities. Homecoming Week included dress-up days to show school spirit, the Junior-Senior ath- letic events, the Return to Fantasy Homecoming Court, and the crowning of the queen at the football game. Lithonia's student govern- ment has been very active this year. Thank-you Student Coun- cil for all the hard work and effort. 97 ll r Kappa Club The 1975-76 Kappa Club is made up of girls that show a concern for the people and the community. This year they fixed fruit baskets for the senior citizens of Lithonia and sponsored the Christmas door decoration contest in the school. By giving the teachers apples and by providing -snacks for the teachers' lounge, the girls showed their appreciation of Lithonia teachers. These girls are very much a part of Lithonia as they show care and con- cern for others. International Club Habla Ud. espanol or Parlez-vous francais? We are students of L.H.S., a place where we learn and grow - each at our own pace: each striving in our own direction. Though we may be heading in different directions, we will never be traveling alone. We are individuals often experiencing the same feelings of pride and determination. Perhaps our greatest pride lies in the fact that we are each part of a class -- a class that makes us proud. Our road is made up of many events which help mold our future. The year 1976 brings about the bi- centennial celebra- tion and the presiden- tial election. It has been a time in which fashion has made a turn about from head to toe. Music has be- come an important part of our everyday lives. Movies, such as JAWS, have made a change from the sweet and simple scenes of the past. Changes have also oc- curred here at L.H.S.: Mr. 0'Rourke, our new principal: Judy Hensley, Homecoming Queen: the smoking area, and the fire. These events all join together to make our path even more memorable. 171 gr. mx Q .P , K .9 R N. ,Xml . LkLh VLLVI X M f A V -N' ' s XR Qtr ff. Trees and mountains became her Sii liildren which she nestled in her hands. A welcoming heart and a loving smile made her become the proud nation she is today. She has endured a long yet pros- perous journey. She has encountered hardships which have helped her to grow stronger. She has been stepped on, but only to fight back. She has S never been too busy or too tired to listen. We call her Liberty, Freedom, Mother, and Home. We call her America. To her on her 200th birthday we say thank you. On this road called life, we learn and grow through its many experiences. As we travel its highways and byways, our knowledge be- comes a part of tomorrow. The past cannot be chang- ed, for it's ours to keep for- ever. We must cope with problems, but not be over- come by them. For no mountain is ever too high and no valley is ever too deep. The pebbles can be tossed aside and the dust can be brushed away. We experience the challenge of life and accept its responsi- bilities. We make time step by step until our pathway is complete. lt's a long, long road . . . 174 R, .4 K ,, , 'A .ga 2' v L ,Mr ,x xii' ' 1 in if 5, 'Z ,Zi '39 ifkjffsv iff 'sw we p-ev' Mi , awk fu 4 X ,, 9 .Kuala g ff iiiel f ' e l ll ili Rgslyn il i i o e o i i ili i Cath e ei R iir Carol ' i i l a a yl Lauferi r i ay i j eiio f f e P ,, 'z, T Vill Dalvi do Gi ibeff-Phoiogfap ' Z i li?fl 5515 1 l Lisa Carder f i gefgiizir l o o find lliiol l lie reoor i oolll o l olloooll or to r 'f ' ' f' 'l f i r o i M355 i oeiiii 4 i I ,,,i5 1g, for your support.vWqithout their f i l i hell of them, many blankfpages f W0Uld appear in this lllllll llillll l Justoremember to keep: f stepping forward and if your Q road should cross someone else's, make the most of it, for there is always room for our fellow man.
