David Unick. was on my way back to my hometown for the dedication ceremonies of perhaps my greatest architectural design — the Litchfield Athletic and Academic Complex This 5.000 acre masterpiece features 4 olympic-size swimming pools, a domed football stadium, and a zo.ooo-book library As I drove along. I was besieged with memories of my high school days, and I wondered what my old class- mates are now doing My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a sputtenng sound in my car I pulled over to the side of the road and walked the remaining half-mile into Litchfield I entered Fred s Auto Emporium and who should I meet other than Ed Nichols It seems he owns an entire chain of Auto Emponums Evidently, all of his tinkering around on Mr Gillming's pickup finally paid off We went to look at my car. and after several quick tests he announced that it had a severe case of Fueltankemus Emptious My puzzled look caused him to smile and say that I had run out of gas Just as we got back into town, we heard a tremendous rumble At first. I thought it was an earthquake, but suddenly an airplane landed on Main Street As soon as the pilot jumped out of the plane onto the street, we knew that it had to be Neal Miller Neal explained that he was on a training mission in his Navy fighter jet when something malfunctioned and he was forced to make an emergency landing Ed checked out the problem, while Neal told me that he had gotten tired of being sea-sick all of the time, so he became a fighter-pilot. At least that way he could spend part of his time off of the ship The only drawback, he said, is that he is required to sit on a catalog in order to see out of the plane Ed came back and told us that the jet engine was completely computenzed. and that the computer teacher up at the school would be of more help than he could I volunteered to go seek out this person and let Ed and Neal catch up on old times As I walked into the computer room. I was surpnsed to find Kevin Chloupek teaching a room full of kids how to play Pac-Man He said he would be more than happy to look at the jet We had started downtown, when I noticed a big commotion at the local veterinary clinic I decided to check it out while Kevin tried to fix the plane I immediately recognized Susan LeFever. Kent Guthard. and Nora Veeder It seems that the noise of the jet landing had scared Susan's pet boa constricter so badly that it had tied itself in a knot Now they were desperately trying to untangle it. After untying the snake we all took a break to reminisce Kent is the local game warden, but is scheduled to take over as head of the State Game and Parks Commission. Nora is the chief veterinary assistant at the clinic, and Susan is the owner of a chain of 15 recreation centers, and soon plans to expand her enterprise to Australia I would have liked to have stayed and chatted longer, but my dedication ceremonies were fast-approaching While nervously walking around the complex waiting, I became interested in a duo already playing tennis on the indoor courts Much to my surpnse. this duo was none other than Linda Wilson and Curtis Heapy They stopped their game long enough to tell me that Linda was currently the athletic director at LHS. but she was resigning to be- come the head coach of the Houston Rockettes — the first all-female basketball team in the NBA Curtis, mean- while. had just retired from professional track after setting the world record in high jump at 15 W' He had already been hired to replace Linda as athletic director Well, the time had finally come for the big event The ceremonies were started off with a speech by the Presi- dent of the Litchfield Chamber of Commerce - John Kucera He later told me that after his stint as quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, he became president of the Converse Shoe Company, and had moved the head office to Litchfield The next event was the arrival of a huge hot-air balloon carrying two teachers - representing the nch tradition of academic excellence at LHS - and a politician who was to give a dedication speech When I saw who the passengers were, however. I knew that there were entirely different reasons Sandy Lewis. Julie Zimmer, and Came Evans were along to supply enough hot air to keep the balloon flying Came, the Lt Governor, gave her speech, then her press secretary. Tina LeFever. stepped up to the microphone and handed her a note Came then rushed off in her pnvate jet. saying something about an emergency meeting with the Contras in Nicaragua Tina, however, stayed behind and joined in the impromptu reunion After the ceremonies I had the opportunity to talk to Sandy and Julie It seems that they both are elementary teachers and had teamed up to start a nursery school in their spare time They both insist that the children listen to Huey Lewis albums non-stop We were just commenting that our entire class had made it back, except one Just then, a black stretch limou- sine pulled up and out jumped Tracy Slocum yelling. Oh1 If I don't find the library. I'm just going to die1'' After we got her calmed down a little, she explained that she is the Chief Neurosurgeon at John's Hopkins and was research- ing the effects on the brain cells of listening to people gurgle when they swallow Our lives had changed greatly since high school, yet our personalities remained the same It was really nice see- ing all my old classmates again, and I hope that it won't be ten more years before we all get together again 10 !□ plui m fh cji—i td w m S qj pj KINDERGARTEN 9 Row Mrs Sue Stubbs, teacher; Middle Row (from left): Lynn Kucera.
