In April, 1858 a school meeting in the district north of the Big Four Railroad was held at which the school directors were instructed to purchase the Disciples' Church for a school house. Preliminary steps were taken in April of the following year to complete the organization of the Litchfield school district and to place it in possession of the several funds Which belonged to it. In the charter the City Council was declared ex-officio trustees and directors of schools.
