X We As wary freshmen we entered Lisbon High School forty-seven strong in September of 1951 to find that Mr. Rishel and Mr. Davis were to guide us through the year. At our first assembly we were warmly greeted by our new principal, Mr. Wolf. During the year we viewed the construction of the new addition to the high school, while writing autobiographies and short stories, and trying to get acquainted with the idea of being in Senior High School. ln 1952, we retumed from the summer vacation, greeted once again by Mr. Rishel, our homeroom teacher. To stan off the year we sponsored a skating party at the Braddock Skating Rink. Soon after our Halloween Party we began making plans for the Sweetheart Dance in February. This was our first activity so we tried to make it as big a success as we could. Before the big event we elected a King, Queen, and Court from the student body. After we had gotten rested from working for the dance, we started to get ready for a Farewell Party for the Sen- iors. In May we went to Gettysburg on our class trip and to a baseball game at Griffith Stadium in Wash- ington. We began our Junior year in the privacy of the portable under Mrs. Bevard's guidance. We sponsored another skating party and then started to think about our play, Stranger In the Night. Our class rings were welcomed as an early Christmas gift. Decem- ber brought about our winter dance, Snow Ball of '53, and a Christmas party. Cupid really cut some capers at our Cupid Capers dance. This was followed by our play under the direction of Miss Michael, Mrs. Flem- ing, and Mrs. Dennison. We found it hard to say good-bye to Mrs. Bevard but were more than glad to welcome Mrs. Kittridge. Our year came to a joyous climax with a colorful Garden of Memories Prom. And then we were Seniors! With Mr. Betts as our advisor we put our noses to the grindstone and settled down for a year of contin- uous work which began with canteens, bake sales, and our refreshment stand at the basketball games. But most important of all was our yearbook, on which we worked both day and night until it was stamped, sealed and delivered. However it was not all work. Some of the things we did were mostly for fun. For example, although rain drops fell we set out with high hopes for the annual Senior day at Maryland University. After a tour of the campus we enjoyed lunch and then went to the football game. In spite of the weather we had a good time. And then at Christmas we enjoyed both our Frosty Frolics dance and a wonderful party during the vacation at Martha Ann's house. When we came back from the holidays, the ordering of our announce- ments and gowns made graduation seem much closer even though there was the whole spring to go. lt did help to have as our last project a hillbilly dance in March. Then the last few weeks of school - they passed so quickly with Baccalaureate Service, Prom, and Farewell Party - they were all wonderful. And at last, on June 15 - after twelve years of readin', 'riting, and 'rithmetic we made it - Graduation. I '1 6 F9 June 16, 1957 Dear Betty Lou, Last Wednesday evening I attended the graduation exercises at school. Larry and Walter were there and told me all about Maryland University. It seemed so odd not to see Glen with them but he went to Colorado to study geology. They were telling about Gail and Doris, who are studying for a nursing career at Maryland. By the way, Larry is studying engineering and Walter will soon be his lawyer. I wonder if farmer Stanley is as quiet as he used to be. I guess you have seen Robert and William, who are now well established in farming. I often see Jimmie around Lisbon, as he is working on the farm too. The athlete of the class, David, has his own filling station now. I read in the pa per that Virginia had taken a vacation from her secretarial job to go see Edwin play his first game in pro-baseball. He really fulfilled his ambition. I saw Martha Ann Wednesday night too. She was on a vacation from Teachers College. She said Rose Marie is in college and is doing outstandingly well. Remember how Shirley and Dewey used to be together all the time? Well, Shirley is now a secretary and Dewey is in the army. Nellie and Mary lane are also doing secretarial work.
