The action centers around Sarah Sears, a lonely spinster, who is seemingly satisfied with her drab life until her young niece, Doris Evans, probes into her secret thoughts, by reading, you guessed it, her diary. By a series of flashbacks we see Sarah courted and later deserted, by Lee Dawson, on her wedding day. Soon things take a turn for the better when her former suitor returns and renews his intentions, Events move rapidly and the curtain closes on the traditional happy ending. Due to the hard work of the cast and the excellent coaching of Miss Varney, we had a successful play. An extra added attraction was a game with the Colby Frosh team, Colby had racked up wins over every opponent but were forced to come back against the Grey's. Dick Kinney held them in check for four innings while Lisbon had a slight lead, Colby's power came through and they eventually won, 11-6, Leading the '57 Greyhounds in batting was Dick Kinney with a hefty .456. Other players batting over .300 were Dave Morin, .392 and Butch Curtis, .308. Dave Morin led in R.B.I. with 19. Dick Kinney, Ed Bowen, and Butch Curtis were the big three in the pitching department. Coach Doughty says that '58 will be a building year with only four returning lettermen. Lettermen that graduated in June were Tom Soychak, Dick Kinney, Butch Curtis, Rolande Wandke, Glen Gamrat, Don Jordan, and Gene Brown. SCORES Lisbon Monmouth Lisbon Colby Fr. Lisbon Erskine Lisbon Erskine Lisbon Richmond Lisbon Richmond Lisbon Williams Lisbon Freeport Lisbon Hallowell Lisbon Williams Lisbon Winthrop Lisbon Hallowell Lisbon Winthrop Dave Morin '58 'G-36 s a 2 '-'F s f r Us wwe? F Coach Frank Danforth's 1957 edition of the Lisbon Greyhounds opened a nine-game slate with a night game against Biddeford High School. Lisbon's football winning streak of 25 straight wins over Maine rivals went by the board as snarling Biddeford tallied in the final period to win, '7-0. After the first defeat, the Greys downed tough Bridgton High, 13-7, in a nip and tuck battle. A few days after Lisbon and beaten Hallowell, some of the players came down with the Asiatic flu. This made it necessary to post- pone and re-schedule a couple of games. Thus, weakened by illness, injuries, and inactivity, Lisbon was overpowered by Boothbay. They then lost to a mighty Winthrop eleven. The final game of the season was played on the new athletic field and Lisbon came through with a resounding victory over Williams High, 20-6. Any way you look at it, this was a rebuilding season for Coach Danforth. It appears, though, that LHS should come up with a championship team in the near future. We wish to express our appreciation for having played under a coach like Mr. Danforth and with such a great group of fellows. Best of luck to the coach and boys in their grid tangles in '58. The Greyhounds could not equal last year's record, but they showed the Lisbon spectators a lot of aggressive ball playing throughout the season. Next year's five will be without this year's three top scorers. Lisbon had a very odd procedure of trailing the teams they lost to, by only a few points at half-time but failing to keep up with them in the third and fourth quarters. Interesting highlights of the year was Frank Starbird tying the record for most points scored in one game f36J set by Dick Kinney last year. Another was the heartbreaking game between Lisbon and Bridgton. Bridgton had smothered the Greyhounds in their first encounter but Lisbon played hard and clean basketball, all to no avail as they were nudged, 47 to 51. Frank Starbird was the individual high scorer totaling 285 points for a 16, 8 points-per-game average. Ed Elcik also hit triple digits with 194 points for a 9. 7 points-per-game average. Graduating lettermen are: Frank Starbird, Ed Elcik, and Bruce Dupal, The outlook for next year's team is good and we want to thank Coach Danforth for all his help fand pattencej and wish him the best of luck with his returning lettermen. An especially exciting game was held on the homecourt between the Lisbon and Bridgton J,V, 's. The final bell sounded with Bridgton out in front 31-30. Another close battle was fought with the Brunswick team, who won 32-27, Added assistance was given to our junior varsity team when several of the freshmen on the varsity squad were sent down to help out. These hardworkers were: Gary Janesco, Steve Drottar, Jackie Gamache, and Bill Gartley. Although the '57-'58 season was not as successful as in the past years, the team's spirit was good, and next year's squad is expected to make a better record. Thanks to Mr, Doughty for his time and effort spent in coaching the junior varsity. No game was lost by more than two points. The outlook for next year is very good since the two high scorers, Sandra Terrell and Ingrid Stein, are re- turning to action and Joan Garbotz is the only senior to leave. The Junior Varsity was comprised entirely of freshmen and sophomores. They won none and lost three games but gained valuable experience. The huge stage formed the horizon on which a golden sun dipped from view amid waving palm trees, trailing hi- biscus, and graceful, though stationary, seagulls. Centered in the auditorium under a sky of colored streamers, more palms, flowers, and a restful glider awaited the dance-weary couples who wanted just one more snapshot before the activities ended. It was a gala evening made merry by the dancing tunes of Bert Cote and his orchestra. A beautiful white satin throne was centered on the stage and the entire gymnasium glowed under gaily colored paper festoons. Smil- ing snowmen and pouting penguins watched from the sidelines and graced the royal couples' table at the rear of the gymnasium. The candidates consisting of Ioan ff , s Gfarouafirw 167111 Garbotz, Bonnie French, Patricia Popadak, Germaine Poulin, Con- stance Lucas, Clifford Bickford, David Morin, Guy Williams, Robert Albert, and Frank Starbird, marched to the stage where the herald pro- claimed Joan Garbotz and Clifford Bickford our new king and queen. Last year's royal lady, Carole Tardiff, performed the coronation ceremony. Dancing to the music of Ronnie Ducette's orchestra completed the evening's festivities. The following officers were elected: Shannon Breton, President, Donna Huston, Vice Presi- dent, Linda Russell, Secretary, Marie Mason, Treasurer, Joanne Bichrest, Parliamentariang Gloria Card, Historian Claire McCarthy, Reporter and Juanita Russell, Song Leader. Under the guidance and direction of o11r advisor, Miss Abbott, the girls have enjoyed such activities as: a Welcome Freshmen Supper, a district E convention at Gould Academy which twenty-six girls attended, and a good-will project. We are very proud to have had our candidate, Martha Gerlek, elected to the state office of vice chairman. Our goal for this year is to improve our parliamentary procedure.
