We had started our freshman year with sixty-eight members. At our first class meeting we elected Clifford Bickford, presidentg David Morin, vice presidentg Germaine Poulin, secretary, and Irene Murray, treasurer. Our advisors are Miss Young, Mr. Danforth, and Mr. Watson. Our class activities started with the sponsoring of a record hop early in October. After that we sold Christmas cards like mad and added to our finances. Friday night before our December vacation the class sponsored a well- attended Christmas dance. Our Junior Prize Speaking was held in February and to round out a well-balanced year we shall honor the seniors with the annual Junior-Senior Prom to be held on May 17. Six of the cheerleaders are from the sophomore class. Our class can boast the starting quarterback of Lisbon's champion football squad, as well as six other players. We have four regulars on the girls' basketball team plus an assistant manager. Four sophomore boys play basketball, and another is the manager of the J. V. 's. 'I'he band also claims eight of our members. Our thanks for a successful year go to our advisors, Miss Margitan, Mr. Doughty, and Mr. Danforth. Varsity Baseball Coach Stan Doughty's Lisbon High baseball team had a great season winning its third Kennebec Valley Con- ference title. 'I'he big Grey played high class baseball winning 13 and losing but 1. Cal Karkos, Dick Pohle, Quentin Curt is and Dave Morin were the top hitters on the club, all hitting well over . 300. Dick Kinney, Jim Murray, and Ed Bowen were the top pitchers for the team, with Kinney winning 7 of the 13 victories. Graduating lettermen were Calvin Karkos, Bob Thomson and Jim Murray. Returning lettermen are Tom Soy- chak, Quentin Curtis, Dave Morin, Roland Wandke, Gene Brown, Dick St. Amant, John Gamrat, Jack Karkos, Dick Kinney, Ed. Bowen, and Don Jordan. Varsity Basketball The 1956-57 basketball squad, under coach Danny Danforth, hada good season winning 12 and losing 7 games. Although the Greyhounds could not equal last year 's record they showed the Lisbon spectators a lot of good basketball. The boys played clean hard ball and the morale and spirit were high throughout the season. The team dominated the Kennebec Valley Conference, winning the title for the second straight year. They lost but one game in the league, which was an overtime defeat to Richmond in the Richmond gym. Dick Kinney was the individual high scorer totalling 404 points, with Butch Curtis, Wes Jordan, and Don Jordan all hitting triple digits. Graduating lettermen are: Tom Soychak, Butch Curtis, Dick Kinney, Wes Jordan and Don Jordan. The outlook for,next year 's team is good and we thank Coach Danforth for all his help and wish him the best of luck with his returning lettermen. Card. junior Varsity Basketball Although the Junior Varsity didn't have a good season as far as records go, the team showed fine spirit and the morale was high throughout the year. Many of the boys, not having too much basketball experience needed a lot of practice and training. With another year of playing the boys should do much better, be well co-ordinated and ready for varsity play. Coach Doughty's boys started the season with an overtime victory, but had a tough time finding the winning rhythm throughout the rest of the season. The team won five, lost eleven, and furnished plenty of exciting games for the Lisbon spectators. A few of the I.V, starters saw limited varsity action as subs. This romantic thetne was unainiously chosen by the junior class for the graduation ball ofthe Seniors of '56, The juniors performed it real work of art in transforming the bare gym into a luxurious colonial gard- ju1zi02'- Senior Prom 19 56 en under a star and bird-laden sky, rfT tlf'tr One of the chief attractions for all those posin, for pictures was the elaborately designed pool with a bridge rising gracefully over it. This scene also included a variety of colorful flowers and several inanimate objects in and around the pool. The other outstanding attraction was the cleverly designed park scene which was on the stage. This scene consisted of beautiful flowers, a weeping willow tree, and a park bench. TQ.e young ladies in their dainty pastel gowns, and the young tnen in their white dinner jackets and black trousers, presented an air of ele- gance to make this social gathering an outstanding and long renieni- bered event of the year. The evening was greatly enjoyed by all who tripped the light fantastic to the music of Eddie Beauparlant. That was what everyone in our class was boasting about after the excellent presentation of the play Drums of Death under the direction of Miss Barbara Varney. The cast and coach worked hard at perfect- ing the play but each one can honestly say he enjoyed every minute of it. We all felt rewarded that our play was well received by a large and appreciative audience. Drums of Death is a mystery tale concerning a stone. There are mysterious deaths and happenings which Sheriff Cooper investigates. Apparently a certain Mr. Bailey is missing and his sister, niece, and friend come to visit him. Finding he is gone, Mr. Bailey's sister, Mrs. Gillette, won't let anyone rest until he has been found. It turns out that one of the principal characters, Doctor Cameron, played by Tom Soychak, is really the villain in disguise. Dick Plante as Mr. Harley, proves to be a government agent in search of the missing stone. Don Jordan and Ann Pohle ably portrayed their parts as colored servants. Louis Kiszonak as the comic sheriff played his role in a realistic manner and brought gales of laughter from the audience. This was the first time in late years that Lisbon High has presented this sort of mystery drama.
