Brother Collins enjoys a “forbidden fruit’’ while gathering with students. Goo Goos are his favorite, but he claims he must hide them so that his wife won't discover his sweet tooth. 22 Dedication ‘‘Our Fearless Leader’’ President Willard Collins became our fearless leader in September of the year 1977. During his time he has successfully zoned the Burton property and increased the endowment fund five fold. Rarely does a man accomplish so much in such a short amount of time. Rarely does a man’s wife accomplish so much. The Associated Ladies for Lipscomb honored Mrs. Ruth Collins by setting up a scholarship fund in her name. People were so inspired by Mrs. Collins and the fund that it topped $52,000 by January. Rarely do two people ever capture the hearts of all who meet them. D What Did I Say? “. .. he always seemed to make chapel a fresh, rewarding experience .. .”’ On having to stand on a platform in chapel: ‘I’ve never been this high in chapel before.” On introducing Buddy Arnold: ‘‘We have gathered together to worship God and His Son Buddy Arnold ... will now lead us in singing. On finding a future mate: ‘‘The birthrate is down which affects enrollment and | want you to do something about it.” “Get out there and start mating!”’ On having a picnic on his lawn: “‘The faculty will supply the ice cream; we’ll supply the grass.”’ On dismissing chapel: ‘That is all.’’

DEDICATION “She was on one side of the bus going up, sitting with a friend, and I was on the other side,’’ President Collins said of his then “‘future mate” Ruth Morris. They were on their way to the Tennessee College Press Conference in Cookeville since Ruth was editor of the Babbler and Willard was business manager. They had two or three dates after they arrived at the conference, however, and they continued to date when they returned to Nashville. They were married five years later in August, 1939. T-shirts and buttons were sold by the ASA in honor of President Collins’ last year. He retires August 31, 1986. Dedication 23
