10 NASHVILLE ... Around the turn of the century, O. Henry chose Nashville for the sub- ject of one of his most celebrated short stories ‘‘A Municipal Report.” In it he gave the recipe for the grim smoggy drizzle of the city: ‘Take of London fog 30 parts; malaria 10 parts; gas leaks 20 parts; dewdrops gathered in a brick yard at sunrise, 25 parts; odor of honeysuckle 15 parts. Mix.’’ He also described the deplorable state of public transpor- tation, remarked that all streets led uphill and spoke of the lack of light- ing and anything ‘‘doing”’ after dark downtown. Things have changed considerably since O. Henry came to town, al- though it is easy to identify with his description of the drizzle. Students travel to Nashville many times ex- pecting to find a sleepy southern town or hillbillies running around barefoot and are pleasantly su- prised. The elements that merge to make up Nashville’s personality are diverse and exciting, and Lipscomb students are at once involved with many aspects of the town. One can never claim to be bored in a city of this size, for there is al- ways some kind of entertainment to be found. The Performing Arts Cen- ter, The Grand Ole Opry, and numer- ous rock concerts provide a selec- tion for everyone. History, art, sports, parks, shopping malls, and amusement parks such as Opryland are also integral parts of the exciting city of Nashville. Truly Nashville has something to offer everyone and is an ideal place to spend four years of maturing, learning and broadening one’s hori- zons.
