EDUCATION DEPARTMENT = § The Education Department welcomed Mrs. Joyce Rucker as a new member of the faculty. She is completing work toward her doctorate in the field of Early Childhood Education and Special Education. The Department began offering for the first time a state-required course in “Educating Exceptional Children in the Classroom.” This requirement will strengthen our preparation for teachers who will be confronted with exceptional children in their regular classrooms. The department sponsored a workshop during the Winter Quarter involving recent graduates from the teacher education program. All areas were represented and valuable contributions were made by the participants for strengthening teacher educa- tion.

26 CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT The Chemistry Department upheld its outstanding reputa- tion in 1978 as Dr. Paul Langford, department chairman, continued in his capacity as advisor to pre-med majors. Joining the Chemistry faculty was Miss Villa Mitchell, in- structor and supervisor of stockroom personnel. A graduate of Lipscomb, Miss Mitchell received her Masters Degree in Or- ganic Chemistry from Vanderbilt University. The department was also involved with a state program instigated by DLC regarding training for work with hazardous materials. Paul B. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ; — a First row L to R: Dr. Sue Berry, Dr. Constance Fulmer, Dr. Cynthia Dilgard, Mrs. Jean Thompson, Miss Charlotte Walker. Second row L to R: Dr. Morris Landiss, Dr. Buddy Thomas, Dr. Douglas Morris. Absent: Dr. Dennis Loyd. The Department of English functions in several capacities. It provides service courses in reading and writing for all stu- dents of the college. Through its majors program it prepares interested students for successful graduate study at leading graduate schools in the country. In its English-education pro- gram it trains teachers for the secondary schools of Tennessee and other states. Through club activities and friendly associ- ation with students, the department offers cultural direction to all students who wish to be educationally superior. The faculty is exceptionally well trained. Most English teachers are mem- bers of scholarly associations and take active parts in the various pursuits of these associations. Some of the faculty members write and publish regularly. The department of Eng- lish is an integral part of the academic program of David Lipscomb College. Morris Landiss, Chairman SSS FACULTY |
