26 CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT The Chemistry Department upheld its outstanding reputa- tion in 1978 as Dr. Paul Langford, department chairman, continued in his capacity as advisor to pre-med majors. Joining the Chemistry faculty was Miss Villa Mitchell, in- structor and supervisor of stockroom personnel. A graduate of Lipscomb, Miss Mitchell received her Masters Degree in Or- ganic Chemistry from Vanderbilt University. The department was also involved with a state program instigated by DLC regarding training for work with hazardous materials. Paul B. Axel W. Swang, Chairman BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The largest department on campus is the Business Department with over 500 majors this year and 300 more registrations. Still in the planning stage is a new Business Administration Building. The department is striving to raise $350,000-$400,000 privately before announcing publicly the need for funds. Many of the members of the department have re- ceived recognition for their contributions to the field of business. Dr. Swang was elected the Secretary- Treasurer of the Southern States Conference of CPAs for the fifteenth consecutive year. Also, Mr. Charles Frasier had two articles in the local business magazine Advantage. New to the Business Department is a semi-annual Business Administrator Lecture for DLC students in which graduates of Lipscomb speak. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT = § The Education Department welcomed Mrs. Joyce Rucker as a new member of the faculty. She is completing work toward her doctorate in the field of Early Childhood Education and Special Education. The Department began offering for the first time a state-required course in “Educating Exceptional Children in the Classroom.” This requirement will strengthen our preparation for teachers who will be confronted with exceptional children in their regular classrooms. The department sponsored a workshop during the Winter Quarter involving recent graduates from the teacher education program. All areas were represented and valuable contributions were made by the participants for strengthening teacher educa- tion.
