A new school year means packing and unpacking, leaving old friends and finding other ones, and _ registration. Freshmen are welcomed by the cheerful words of the adminis- tration: “We have never lost a student during registration.” Both under and upperclassmen soon wonder if they will not be the first. But after changing classes, paying bills, and writ- ing your name countless times, the job is completed, and a new life at Lipscomb begins. 22 23 Freshman Mixer All things must have a beginning leading to anend. Life begins with birth, day begins with light, night comes with darkness. Just as the beginnings of these natural transpirations are welcomed, enthusiastic freshmen beginning an exciting college life are also welcomed. Of course, college freshmen are momentarily over- whelmed by the hustle and bustle atmosphere of a college campus. This year’s freshman class was no different. However, the typical worries, fears, and anxieties experienced by all freshmen, gradually disappeared with involve- ment in classes, activities, and new friendships. The first real activity the freshman class partici- pated in was the freshmen mixer conducted by combined efforts of the social clubs. HE © As school begins old friends and new meet together, teachers begin classes anew while students learn through wonder and confu- sion. Chapel seats are filled again, competitive tryouts are anxiously faced, and books are opened as classes begin with an- ticipation. First Day of Classes 27 28 comb 1ps _ ue o a) a | Oo ee w a eS October Odyssey The October Odyssey enjoyed a very successful debut this year on the Lipscomb College campus. Planned to coincide with open-house it provided an evening of fun to erase any fall quarter blues. The Odyssey consisted of various games and contests. Competition was very keen between the social clubs. The slight nip in the air and the multi-colored leaves of autumn gave an ideal atmosphere for the out- doors event. 30 Games of skill, games of chance, plus plenty of funny pranks went to- gether to make up the Oc- tober Odyssey. Whether it was getting ready for a shoe race, trying to be the first to build a pyramid, attempting to push some- one around in a wheel barrow, or running with ipemiever Olv anwex peri- enced athlete, everyone attending the Odyssey seemed to have a great time! 32 Lipscomb Celebrates Bison Day The festivities of Bison Day started early on a cold Thurs- day this year, but the spirit and some of the outfits kept the Bisons warm, and the marching helped too. oir eae Lipa | trem inner eit : y } SL! eS f° am = ee ME RY 33 There are many legends that tell about the strange characters that ap- pear when the sun goes down, but Bison Day brings out many unusual creatures after the sun comes up. Strangers may get the idea that Hal- loween’s a little late at this college, but Lipscomb students know that this special day is a big part of the victory. 34 Competition starts Bison Day off since all the clubs want to be the most original. The biggest competition is at night when the Bison’s desire is to welcome a visiting Bison team by defeating them. It has become a tradi- tion, and everyone likes to keep a winning tradition. No one will forget any Bison Day they have seen, and this year is no different. Bison Man was almost faster than the speeding bullets of Super Fly’s gang. All of the guns might have caused a mob, but the big- gest mob was at the pep rally. How could we not win. That night six clubs were victori- ous, but all of the Bisons were win- ners with their team and found a lot of memories. If this campus is ever haunted by panthers wearing long pink underwear, or the sight of a Dis- ney World commercial making people look wistful, remember that the ghost of Bison Day past lives on. 35 Delta Na Na Na! Excitement and tension mount as dark glasses and bobby socks are dragged from the post in preparation for the Delta Na Na Na concert. Sleeveless T-shirts, pony tails, and rolled-up jeans are just a few symbols of the nos- talgic 50’s. A major event of the year, the entertainment produced by members of the Delta Nu social club is en- joyed by all. 36 Delta Na Na Na was started three years ago as Delta Nu’s Bison Day entry. It was such a smashing hit that they have been called upon to perform often on cam- pus as well as at functions away from Lip- comb. Complete with slicked-greased- back hair, white socks, skinny ties and screaming “chicks”, Delta Na Na Na has performed their concerts in the nostalgic, yet humorous style of the 50’s. Their rep- ertoire includes such classics as: “Charley Brown”, “Rock Around the Clock”, as well as the more sentimental “Johnny Angel” and “Tell Laura I Love Her”. When they perform, we laugh or feel senti- mental, or some of us even scream de- pending on the song and the way it is sung, but most important of all, we always enjoy the concert and the fun. 37 Ray Walker Ray Walker, songleader for Madison church of Christ, becomes a part of campus life when he presents a concert to students and faculty. Walker, an ex-Jordanaire, is known as the oldest teenager in the world. oore with Avion M ao = : as : 3 So Talent Show Some toe-stomping musicians, golden voices, classical instrumentalists, plus an abundance of other talent all exem- plified this year’s talent show. Even Hollywood might have been razzle-daz- zled by the creativeness displayed by the participants. Steve Staggs and Marna Branstetter added to the entertainment of the evening as master and mistress of ceremonies. Dave Carnahan took the top prize with his Georgia honking har- monica playing. Ernie Clevenger was awarded second place for his guitar ar- rangement, and the third winner was Bill Lokey who performed an original classical piano work. In summary, the Talent Show proved to be a smashing SUCCESS. see —camsamnsmmmmnmsie LEELA LOLOL OLE OBL IROL IE | f i ; RH on ee teense cy ebaessip Knees knocking through the dress? Endless hours were spent re- hearsing, constructing sets, creating costumes, and iron- ing out last-minute diffi- culties, with the reward of three nights on stage. A special thanks is due to ‘hose who worked behind che scenes to make Carousel 4 SUCCESS. . . Hamlet, Ophelia, the king, and queen were consecutively played by Mikel Byrd, Lynn Laughlin, John Kellum, and Teresa Choate. 45 Dorm Lite Yes sir, all students have to do is just lounge around?? This was in hopes that more freshmen would come since they would be eligible to pledge. All social, service, and professional clubs partici- pated, each attempting to make its own booth the most attrac- tive to prospective pledges. Members labored many long hours preparing exhibits, pamphlets, and snacks to go with their chosen theme. All this resulted in two weeks of parties, decisions, and anxious waiting. After the initial joy of re- ceiving bids, pledges began to dread the three weeks ahead of them. After the ordeal, they marvelled that it had begun five short weeks ago at the Rush Fair. 4. ee Civitan HELP REELS OME TET ET a TN oe Es an Pledging a Social Club Whether the task is obeying an active’s de- mands, or simply deciding what it is we are eat- ing with our potatoes and salad, the compan- ionship and conversation during the mealtime hours are some of the best on campus. 52 Snow, Snow, and Sunny winter silence. In our day-to-day life here at DLC, the world is often topsy-turvey and care- free. Although we may not always see things the way others do, they are willing to lend a helping hand. In addition to their meets, the gymnastics team performs during basketball halftimes, at Homecoming, and on High School Day. The entire team qualified for the NAIA Nationals in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where it placed sixth in the nation, losing to the University of New Mexico by only 5 100 of a point. In 1955, 1956, and 1957, he was chosen the team’s Most Valuable Player. His .456 batting average of 1965 is still the team record. Since Dugan began coaching, he has received sev- eral awards. He received the Area Five Coach of the Year and the NAIA District 24 Coach of the Year as well as being named Man of the Year by the Nashville Banner. In the fall of 1974 he was selected as an assistant coach for the United States team in the World Base- ball games held in St. Petersburg, Florida. Under his guidance the United States team finished as the World Champion in this tournament. Dugan also has been invited to go to Belgium this summer to coach the Belgium baseball team in the Eu- ropean Games July 27-August 4 in Barcelona, Spain. The first part of Dugan’s stay will be devoted to work- ing with coaches in Belgium’s little league and Babe Ruth teams. He will be a U. S. Ambassador for base- ball, giving clinics and talking up the sport with vari- ous government officials and dignitaries. Dugan is nationally known and respected as a coach and author. He now serves on three NAIA Committees. He is the President of the Independent Colleges, the Professional Baseball Regulations Com- mittees, and the All-American Selection Committee. He works directly with the commissioner of baseball on the regulations committee, making rules concern- ing the NAIA athletes, and helps choose All-American teams on the latter committee. Coach Dugan has contributed articles to “Scholas- tic Coach” for the past ten years. In 1970 two of his articles were chosen as chapters in The Best of Scho- lastic Coach, a book that gives in depth detail on how- to-play action. Dugan has also written two books that are enjoy- ing good success. In 1971 he wrote How to Organize and Coach Winning Baseball. The book is now in its second printing. The book covers each position and coaching techniques in fourteen chapters. His second book is a revision of Teaching Individual and Team Sports, by R. T. DeWitt. The family of Mr. DeWitt asked coach Dugan to revise the 1953 book. Coach Dugan is one of the most respected coaches in the country. He and his wife Diane, have three children Christi, Mike and Kurt. Lipscomb is fortunate in having a coach of na- tional prominence as its baseball coach and Athletic Director. Ken Dugan is this man that has built a suc- cessful winning baseball tradition here at Lipscomb. 229 Baseball SMa seach Sallie: atind, einai First Row—Phil Stinson, Bob Parsons, Kevin Stanforth, Tommy Cartwright, Bob Hamilton, Keith Rosenblum, Johnny Jones, Doug Rives, Keith Toler.
