We remember that we studied in the library and talked in the library and listened in class and slept in class. We ate lunch and sat on the wall and watched the clock and drank a coke. There was a date Friday night and TV Saturday night and studying late Sun- day night. We went to church and went to class and we went to chapel. We listened to WMAK or WKDA or WSIX F.M. and typed and thought and figured and complained and cried and laughed and phoned and loved. We did a the million things in a million ways. But each of the million ultimately fell into one of three categories, whose total encompasses all activi- ty of any kind at Lipscomb. For everything we did was either to examine and improve our re- lationship with God, or to gain academic know]- edge, or to confront and make contact with each other. The proportionate interests and ef- fort which any one person put into any one of these three depended largely on which person he was and what his interests and goals were. But all of us at one time or another engaged to some degree in all of these areas of Lipscomb activity. This book purports to represent to you that engagement. To all she displays beauty, friendliness, and Christianity. As a campus beauty finalist, captain of the cheerleaders, football queen, and Civinette officer, Jane Buchi Connelly has merited Miss Lipscomb, 1968. BACHELOR OF UGLINESS 1968’s Bachelor of Ugliness is a combination of athletic prowess, academic success, and Chris- tian humility. A four-year letterman, he served as captain of the basketball team in his senior year. A leader in the accounting department, he is a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and is listed in Who’s Who as is his wife. Bill Connelly, hus- band in Lipscomb’s most outstanding couple, is Bachelor of Ugliness. 47 48 HOMECOMING Homecoming at Lipscomb symbolizes a variety of meetings to different groups. To the alumni it is the joy of renewing old friendships and the sadness of viewing a change in the campus. To club members it is exhibits with the accompany- ing all night vigil; to the team it is the game by which they are judged; to the average student it is an afternoon game with crowded bleachers; to the undergraduate members of the homecom- ing processional, it is an opportunity to dress- up for an audience; but to the queen and the seniors around her, homecoming is the culmina- tion of all that has made Lipscomb theirs. Bill Burton and Melvin Haynes rounded out the JV starting line-up while Coach Mike Hartness also played Arnold Simpson, Eddie Montgomery, Billy Williams, Bill Bryan, Warren Buck, Mark Massey, and Presley Ramsey. 81 82 soi ath ere ee Saas With eight qualifiers for the National Meet, Coach Bailey Heflin hailed 1968 as Lipscomb’s finest season in track. The squad registered a 4-1 mark with wins over Morehouse, Union, Tennessee Tech, and Austin Peay. In addition, the Bisons took first in both indoor and out- door TIAC meets. Buddy Martin proved to be the teams highest scorer running consistently in six races per meet. Frosh Lewis Allen ranked fifth in the nation in the 220, while James Teage broke the pole vault record. 83 CROSS COUNTRY Joey Haines continued his prowess with the javelin, and Ronnie Cope continued a fast pace in the distance runs. Ken Durham, Terry Irwin, George Henry, and Terry Hudgins, Gary Branum, Mo Brunelle and Linol Her- nandez round out the 1968 squad. Andy Russell set school records in the mile and two mile, won the SEC Invitational dis- tance runs, competed for the olympic trials, and was a three event champion in the TIAC. 84 Nashvillians have come to expect a superior gymnastics team at Lipscomb, and they were not disappointed in the 1967-68 season. Led by three-time All-American Ted Immediato, the squad compiled another winning record highlighted by the defeat of nationally-rank- ed Eastern Michigan. Dennis Green got the victory while Farrell Owens and Randy Marshall provided the hitting power. Other wins were scored over Western Kentucky, Indiana State, Austin Peay, Valdosta State and Belmont. All-American Wayne Rankhorn led Lipscomb in hit- ting with a .406 average, 43 hits, 6 homers, and 35 RBI’s. Dave Evans was the only other above .330 at .865. Randy Morris, Dennis Green, and Mark Massey picked up the other 13 victories. 90 The opening of school brought changes to the grid- iron at Lipscomb. The season saw the return of interclass competition after five of interclub games. The style also returned to eleven man football after six man teams failed. Under the direction of coach Tony Adcock, stars such as freshmen Burton Elrod and Glenn Speis, sophomores Billy Drewery and Steve Peden, and seniors Bob Morris and Cosby. Yet the climate of Christianity has reached new peaks during this school year. Dynamic alumnus Bill Banowsky initiated this drive during the fall meeting. Dedicated young people throughout the nation attended the well-planned Mission Workshop. But, pri- marily, students became aware of a need to come closer to their Father. “FOREIGN FIELDS. = | CAMPAIGNS : WEAL forall adult | Classes on Wednesday OVER 22000 SO Restonne For “ of | THE VOICE OF 2 : AS A JUV! “9 fe : é ; Cy ? 4; : aN 2 rr ry, ¢ 5 ¥ 7 Le I ‘ : “ted xg Fi dts Fg 100 Summer quarter is the season of green- ery, tennis, air conditioning, and out- door gatherings. Summer quarter at Lips- comb provides a host of pleasurable memories. 101 102 ROUTINE Life can become a series of repeated events. The morning shave or cosmetic session, the rush to class, the countless futile trips to the mailbox, and the searching hours in the student center all become boring and routine at times. Yet the graduate looks back on these little things with an unfilled longing. SSSLEES PASSES eee : : : 103 104 Love is the only thing which gives mean- ing to life. It is the deepest and greatest reason for living. Sharing the little things in life can make two hearts become one. A late-night phone call, television in the stu- dent center, sharing a study load or a warm fire on a cold winter’s night can help in the understanding of the word love. 105 106 SOCIAL EVENTS Ankle-length gowns, tuxedos, candlelight and many hours of work and planning bring to Lipscomb each quarter that one night of formality and sophistication when the boys act more like men, and the girls are transformed into individual islands of grandeur. The three banquets during the 1967-68 school year were held at the Barn Dinner Theatre, featuring “Barefoot in the Park,” The Andrew Jackson Hotel, featuring Buddy and Bernie Arnold, and Morrison’s Cafeteria, featuring the Lonesome Rhodes. jo) = 108 Life is full of unique experiences at Lipscomb, one of which is dating. Contrary to popular opinion, in every season a young man’s thoughts turn to love. 109 110 STUDY Although often forgotten or overlooked, classes and studies are the primary rea- son for having a college. Classes may be lively and interesting or drag on endless- ly. The ritual of reading or research at- tacks each student, regardless of his aver- sion to study, if he plans to maintain a lengthy sojourn on campus. OS EY GG spy ® ye 111 AAI AE N =- — 130] = = 114 DAY STUDENTS There are three breeds of non-boarding stu- dents. The day student lives in the comforts of parental housekeeping and food services. The married students share the experiences of studying, financial worries, homemaking, and companionship. But the off-campus res- ident lives in a cluttered world of freedom and self-preservation. The library and stu- dent center serve as second homes for the day student. 115 116 Winter is the season of short days and long nights, the lengthy Christmas season, basket- ball and gymnastics, Homecoming, and many of the traditional Lipscomb events. Occasion- ally, the most beautiful and most frustrating of the weatheyr’s calling cards presents scenes such as appear on these pages. 0H? 8 Rae AEA a. oe ee . . : o Wg. An astute reader of faces can discover these emo- tions about him whenever he feels so inclined. These moods help mold the complete person. 119 120 SOCIAL LIFE Does the sophisticated high school sen- ior revert to childishness in a matter of weeks? The mixer suggests a loud affirmation. Social life ranges from the formality of banquets to the painful pleasure of a skating party. The fac- ulty-student relationship enriches col- lege life with vists to professors’ homes. Social life involves the mutual giving of one’s self to others. 121 122 For a full year four student body officers tried to find a sequel to the great Letterman shows which combined good taste and reasonable prices. The answer came May 18 with the pres- entation of Bobby Goldsboro and Ray Walker in concert. Walker, a sensational performer, and Goldsboro, the leading record seller of early 1968, made the wait worthwhile. 123 Each person’s concept of life at Lipscomb is different. The pictures on the next four pages depict various phases of the Lips- comb atmosphere. How they affect each person personally reflects his view of stu- dent life. 124 o ZY ee 125 126 : | ae a 127 Petia SP RARE te WN IV SAP pa AR ANSEL ae 129 STUDENTS cates eeaeeibamnamnneeneiieeta nen ikea cra Ms 4 eae 130 ise) - 132 ac PRESIDENT’S STUDENT COUNCIL The President’s Student Council is composed of the school’s academic and social leaders. These men and women, in tuxedos and evening gowns, thrilled audiences throughout Tennessee and the Central South and and Southwest with their powerful performances. Director Charles Nelson concluded a remarkable Lipscomb tenure by conducting a combined chorus and orchestra composed of Lipscomb students and members of the Nashville Symphony. 13s D.L.C. BAND The David Lipscomb College Band may be found in concert, building spirit on the court and in the stands at basketball games, or fur- nishing accompaniment for collegiate drama- tic productions. The band’s performance during the Homecoming ceremo- nies will long be remembered. 136 oo 137 Debaters Kenny Barfield, Dr. Carroll Ellis, Head Coach, Wayne McMahan, Sidney Fulford, Dr. Marlin Connelly, Assistant Coach, and Larry Pederson. 138 DEBATE SQUAD One of Lipscomb’s most successful teams for the year was not athletic. The debate squad, composed of veterans, compiled an amazing win record and carried away trophies from the nation’s major tournaments. The high point of the season was a round with the champions of Great Britain in chapel and on area television. This climaxed a rewarding season. 139 a Jim Turner Carol Willis STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Recipients of boundless glory upon elec- tion and infinite complaints in office, Lipscomb’s student body officers serve for two quarter terms beginning in the Summer and the winter. Their duties range from the ultimate selection to the Student Life Committee to selling tick- ets to a skating party. Carol Willis and Jim Turner organized and initiated a new Greek club system.
