Page 2 EDITOR'S FOREWORD It is with great pleasure that we, the staff of the 1956-57 BACKLOG, present to you this volume of memories of your life and growth at Lipscomb. Whenever life seems dreary, we hope that the ideals and accomplishments pictured on these pages will renew your inspiration to forge ahead and that you may have a world at peace in which to labor.

David Lipscomb College originated in the desire of David Lipscomb and J. A. Harding for a school in which young people, while obtaining a general education, might study the Bible daily as the only source of faith and practice in religion. In Oc- tober, 1891, the first session of the Nashville Bible School began in a rented house on Fillmore Street, with a final attendance of thirty-two. By the open- ing of the third session in 1893, lots on South Spruce Street had been purchased and buildings had been erected. The enrollment for this session was fifty- two. The following summer a men’s dormitory was erected; and the enrollment of the school grad- ually increased while the school remained at this location for ten years. In the summer of 1903, David Lipscomb deeded his farm of sixty-five acres on Granny White Road to the school. ‘Two large brick buildings were erected; and the old Lipscomb
