He lived quietly among us—always humble in the midst of his proud accomplishments, warmly responsive to our needs, friendly and cheerful—the servant of God. The portrait of Brother Baxter is etched in the hearts of all of us, and to his memory we grate- fully and sincerely dedicate this BACKLOG. Crisman Memorial Library, the seventh bu'lding completed during the Lipscomb Ex- pansion Program, was dedicated October 7, 1948. Its construction was made possi- ble by the generosity of the Crisman family of Chattanooga, including B. A. Crisman, the late O. A. Crisman who was for many years a member of the Lipscomb Board of Directors, and their mother. Ultimate volume capacity of the reading rooms and stacks is 100,000, and twenty-three carrels are provided for research. Johnson Hall and the second part of Elam Hall were completed in 1948. The supervision of the dormitories is a service that involves a tremendous amount of responsibility and is sometimes accepted without the proper appreciation; however, Lipscomb is fortunate in having good supervisors. In order to accomplish this service, speeches, interpretations, and debates are presented in their auditorium periods. Voice training is essential. One way to improve is to listen. One of the highlights of the year is the Oratorical Contest held in the memory of the founders of David Lipscomb College. Brother Baxter congratulates James Vandiver for achieving first place in this memorable event. Debate workshops aid high school students. In two short months he coached and inspired the Bisons to heights of glory unsurpassed in the annals of David Lipscomb College. Coach Morris has earned the gratitude of David Lipscomb College for his tremendous personal effort in bolstering the prestige of the school and instilling in the team and stu- dent body the aggressive desire to win. Their strategy and strokes are pol- ished under the tutoring eyes of Dr. Jennings Davis, as they battle for the Western division championship of the Volunteer State Athletic Con- ference. These ''men in white'' round out one of the finest small college intercollegiate athletic programs in the South. Coach Jennings Davis and top man, Tom Downey, shake hands on the expectation of another successful year. The 1955 squad was co-champion of the V.S.A.C. Jim Oliver, Eddie Gleaves, Tom Downey, Jerry Choate, Joe Fitch, James Lee McDonough, Frank Cockran, Bill Ruhl. Coach Tom Hanvey Captain Jim Dark Co-Captain Phillip Slate Lynn Baker Jack Boustead Donald Hampton GYMNASTIC TEAM The purposes of the Bison Gymnastic team are: To present the spirit of Lipscomb to the public, encourage high school graduates to enroll at David Lipscomb College, and to exhibit showmanship in its finest form. The gymnastics program is invaluable in the development of motor skills, flexibility, and coordination. It aids in the adjustment of the individual to the group and develops leadership and initiative. The David Lips- comb College tumbling team has made appearances on tele- vision, at Air Force bases, Veterans Hospitals, and many of the high schools in the Middle Tennessee area. TRACK For the first time in Lipscomb history, the Col- lege Athletic Department will field a highly or- ganized intercollegiate track team under the di- rection of Coach Duane Slaughter. The Bison 'Thinclads ' will compete in the Volunteer State Athletic Conference meet at Murfreesboro in addition to dual and triangular track and field meets throughout the state. Dr. Slaughter, vet- eran track mentor, who came to the coaching statt this year from the University of lowa, is optimistic about the future of his newly organized squad, which is composed mainly of freshmen and sophomores. Although inexperienced, the spirit of the squad prophesies that in a few short sea- sons the men of purple and gold will consistently contend for the conference championship.
