Text from Pages 1 - 226 of the 1949 volume:

Divie EY Ag “ Te ke 4 YS ot , « ’ Within these pages is a record of the year 1949 at David Lipscomb College. From all parts of the world we came with visions of fruitful lives filled with service to our country, to our fellow men, and to our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. May the sparks of memories in your heart never die nor the flame of ardour be quenched with the over- whelming of years. Always recall with the opening of these pages that the warm, friendly light of the BACKLOG, still aflame with precious memories— welcomes you again By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life. To the Lipscomb student Brother Baxter epitomizes humility. His humbleness of spirit, yet firmness of purpose, are living sermons to those who observe him daily. His plainness in presenting God's Word, his apt illustrations from a life rich with experience make one see that the gospel is applicable to every phase of life. One who has contributed greatly to the success of four Christian colleges, having been president of three, Brother Baxter is truly a man who serves for the good of the school with no thought of personal attainment. Because of his humility, his forgetfulness of self, his genuine love of the church, we, the Senior Class, do dedicate THE 1949 BACKLOG to Batsell Baxter. The Lord is my shepherd; | shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though | walk through the valley of the shadow of death, ! will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine ene- mies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and | will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Refreshed by prayer, song, and meditation, they leave with a desire to become more like their Master. Speak oft with thy Lord.'' . . . Every eve- ning before retiring, Johnson Hall girls gather for a brief de- votional. .. . Those who take part find these periods appropriate climaxes to the day's activities. Overturf, minister of the College Church, is shown discussing the work of the congregation with Robert Jones, min- ister of the Southside Church of Christ, Fort Worth, Texas. Jones conducted the fall meeting, and preached to large audi- ences at every service. James Bales, head of the Bible Department of Harding Col- lege, was speaker for the spring meeting. Approximately 150 Lipscomb students plan to devote their lives to the work of the ministry. Many of them preach every Sunday for congregations in the Middle Tennessee area. During the year, they meet every Monday evening to discuss problems and hear talks by experienced ministers. Wendell Bloomingburg, chairman of the group, is in charge of the weekly meetings. Batsell Baxter is serving his third year as head of the Bible Department. His stu- dents profit from the experience he has had as a preacher, educator, and writer. His lessons are delivered simply, yet force- fully. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Speak oft with thy Lord. ... Every D. L. C. student has a daily class in Bible during the school year. Throughout the college's fifty-eight-year existence, its leaders have sought to fulfill the original purpose of the school: instruction in the Word of God. Able instructors make sure that Bible ‘s not just another subject. They are, left to right: lra North, James Baird, Harris Dark, Batsell Baxter, Willard Collins, J. R. Stroop, and Bat- sell Barrett Baxter. Highlight of the entire program was the annual fellowship dinner, which honored those who had been preaching forty years or more. Twenty-two honor guests attend- ed, with a total of 1,061 years’ preaching experience. 1949 WINTER Most of the visitors on the campus for the lectureship were preachers of the gospel. Many of them came from distant places to enjoy the week of association and instruction. Shown discussing their part of the program are (left to right): Melvin Wise, J. T. Marlin, and Paul Ed- wards. Their subjects were Grounds on Which We Receive the Bible as the Word of God, The Three Dispensations,'’ and Regeneration, respectively. Oth- er visiting speakers were J. E. Acuff, S. H. Hall, Bonds Stocks, Avis Wiggins, George Bethurum, Marshall Keeble, B. C. Goodpas- ture, Walter Adams, C. M. Pul- lias, and L. R. Wilson. LECTURESHIP Theme of this year's series, which was held January 24-28, was ''God's scheme of Redemption. Approximately 300 visitors, representing eighteen states, attended the programs. Three sessions of lectures were held each day during the period. Several coilege faculty members were fea- tured on the program. They are: A. C. Pullias, J..P.. Sanders, Paul Mrantet nel w seas ankee Stroop, Harris Dark, Batsell Barrett Baxter, J. E. Choate, Wymer Wiser, Willard Collins, Eugene Clevenger, James Baird, Ira North, and Thomas Whitfield. Students who are pri- marily interested in the German field meet periodically to study problems. Organized by Fred Casmir, stu- dent from Germany, the group attempts to acquaint itself with the customs and language of that country. Those who plan to serve as missionaries after graduation join the Mission Study Class, which meets every week to study reports from mission fields in the United States and abroad. Members of the group sponsored a campus drive to furnish needed equipment for Nash- ville Christian Institute. With eyes to the future, the Lipscomb Athletic Department envisions an expanded and all-inclusive athletic program. The new gymnasium nearing completion, prospects of a well-equipped athletic field in the near future, and an increasing number of well-trained coaches and teachers, cause Lipscomb to look forward to greater teams, more varied intramural programs, and a much larger physical education department. SCHOOL SPIRIT THE 1949 CHEERLEADERS The 1949 cheerleaders proved to be amonq the best in Lipscomb history. They began the year with a rousing pep rally before the T. P. |. game and never ceased to liven the student spirit throughout the year. Pictured at the left, they are Jerlene York, Fannie Rice Gill, Bobby Brooks, Betty Owens, Charles Buffington, Joyce Sanderson, and Joy Greg- ory. The student cheering section at every game was always wild with enthusiasm and faithful in their support of the Bisons. The Lipscomb spirit was at its peak in 1949.. HERMAN WADDELL, having served as assistant coach of the Bisons for the last two years, took over the duties as head coach this year. His great concern for his players, his will to win, his devotion to the game, his sacrificing spirit, his Christian personality, and his always gentlemanly conduct brought the respect and esteem of his team, his school, and his fellow coaches. The team ended the season with a record of eleven victories and nine defeats, amassing a total of 1,102 points against |,0I7 points scored by their opponents. The '49 season ended the collegiate careers of only two of the Bisons, Frank Downing and George McIntosh. Coach Waddell look s forward, therefore, to greater things next year with a seasoned group of letter men to return. It was instrumental in giving prestige to the varsity letter award, providing for a greater interest in athletics on the campus, selling illustrated programs at the basketball games, and creating a better spirit between students, faculty, and athletes.
