Making sure that nothing was lacking at any of the Bisons’ games this year were the above five. As the team played hard, this quintet produced many stirring yells to help insure a victory. The students elected them, and they did their job well, even when Bob Brooks lost a shoe in mid-court. ies COACH EUGENE BOYCE ‘ ee Pome we To plan an intramural program, to keep everybody playing, and to produce winning Bisons are the jobs of Fessor Boyce. As the records of the year are carefully examined, one can easily see that his easy manner and quiet skill accomplish their purpose. Bill Bonner, Sportscaster Bob Brewer, Trainer Jimmy Eaton, Manager Boasting a won-lost record of 16-10, Coach Gene Boyce's Bisons finished one of Lipscomb's greatest basketball seasons. Beginning the play with powerful Vanderbilt of the Southeastern Conference the Herd was outclassed in the final minutes of the game and relinquished a stubborn 43-57 verdict. Going to Pulaski for the next encounter, the team had a chance to fill the net and returned home with a 70-35 victory. The next game with TPI of Cookeville was a heartbreaking loss. The Eagles managed to edge by the Bisons by five points—the score: 50-55. Sewanee's “University of the South'’ came to the Center Gym for the following tilt, but they were sent back smarting under a 51-21 defeat. Traveling to Cookeville the Bisons failed to avenge the previous loss and dropped the contest to the Eagles this time by seven points—43-50. Proceeding from TPI the team journeyed to Sewanee to begin a six-game winning streak taking in turn: Sewanee: 54-38; Athens College of Athens, Alabama: 99-48—one of the most impressive victories of the year; Lambuth College of Jackson, Tennessee: 54-40; FSTC of Florence, Alabama: 78-65; Cumberland University of Lebanon, Tennessee: 68-63; and Union of Jackson, Tennessee: 64-51. MTSC of Murfreesboro ended this string of wins by taking the next game 66-53. The following two games were defeats also as Vanderbilt and Austin Peay of Clarksville topped the scoring by 57-37 and 54-51, respectively. On the victory trail again the purple and gold began another series of five wins as Cumberland again fell 72-39; Lambuth 55-44; Union 94-63—a game in which big Harry Moneypenny netted 34 points to break an all-time Lipscomb scoring record; and Martin 74-41. This streak was finally broken in the last game of the regular season when Austin Peay downed the Bisons 63-55. Don Mcintyre Miles Ezell Bob Mason The Bisons entered two tournaments this sea- son. In the first, the recently organized Volun- teer State Athletic Association Tourney, they opened against MTSC of Murfreesboro and ad- vanced to the later rounds with a convincing 58-41 win. But with Captain Frank Downing suffering from an injury which hampered him the last of the season, Lincoln and Austin Peay . in succession proved to be too much for the Herd in the following games and they wound up on the bottom side of the two scoring parades 56- 65 and 64-83. With these losses the Bisons cap- tured fourth place in the tourney and Jennings Davis was named on the all-tournament selection. The second tournament, the Mississippi Valley Conference, saw Lipscomb pitted against North- west Mississippi whom they toppled 79-52. But, as in the previous tourney, the Herd failed to survive the second game and Paducah Junior College removed them from the semi-finals 66- 51. In the final tilt with Florence State Teachers the Bisons were pushed all the way, but a basket by Davis near the close of the game put them in the winning class. . They returned to the camp- us with third place trophy and two men, Davis and Moneypenny, on the tournament selection. Topping a successful season the team was hon- ored with a banquet presented in the Student Cented by O. J. Davis, Sr. George McIntosh, speedy and sturdy Bison guard, was presented with a trophy naming him the Most Valuable Player of the year. Fifteen men received letters. Those receiving the coveted awards were: Cap- tain Downing, Alternate Captain Davis, Money- penny, Henderson, Mclntosh, Mclntyre, Nix, Hendon, Ezell, Rice, Grandy, Kirk, Temple, Ma- son, and Russell. c ° a Cc ® ads © £ © oo © 28 GLORIA WHEELER Setting a precedent for coming basketball seasons, beautiful Gloria Wheeler reigned as Homecoming Queen at the Lipscomb-Austin Peay game February 23. A few contests ended in defeat, but the opposition had only a few points lead when the final whistle blew. Acting as a resource for the varsity, a few players were graduated to the higher team. The competition is often keen and the spirit is always high. This 1947-48 year was no exception. The attempts in the first tourney were not very successful, but the team copped the second event to bring home the trophy from the first net tourney in this league. Ben Reid captured the singles title and McIntosh and Davis took the doubles. Great hopes for the '49 season are held since the entire team will return to resume play. With the support of new- comers and the knowledge from this year's experience the Bisons should be in position to continue as a championship squad, Interscholastic tournaments, was on hand. April showers rationed practice sessions, but the squad developed into an organization which lacked no qualities of a winning club. As we go to press, the team has played only one game. In this one the Bisons won easily over the Governors of Austin Peay. Other games scheduled for play are: Martin, Cumberland, TPI, Florence, MTSC, and Bethel, with repeats with several of these teams. Nice whirl Reached peak in tourna- ment . . . Should have a great season next year. At the initial game of the basketball season, with only four returning letter men—Al Bartlett, Bill Bradshaw, Burton Grant, and Tom Trimble—the hopes of the Mustangs were a little doubtful. Surprising rnany of their loyal followers, the Ponymen were successful in taking the first game with Hume-Fogg by a score of 31-26. Not to be daunted, these lads took North easily 32-17 in their next appearance. Playing Peabody, the Mustangs were seriously threatened, but after the first half they came roaring back to overcome their opponent's lead and win 39-38. Their next foe, White Bluff, proved to be easily “blutfed'’ as they won 41-23 to make it four straight wins as a Christmas present to Coach Phillips. In the first game after the holidays the Mustangs met their Waterloo as the Peabody five avenged their first loss by a 38-33 victory. The Lipscombites were successful in hitting the win column again as they over- came their next opponent, Duncan, 43-15 in what seemed like a prac- tice game for the mighty Muz- tangs. The home-coming game with the added attraction of crowning the queen for the year was a hard- fought but losing battle as How- ard conquered the stubborn Pony- men 27-26. After scoring one point in the first quarter of their next game played against North, the Mustangs racked in e'ghteen points the second quarter and fin- ished the game with the score standing 36-34 in their favor. Playing the highly-improved Duncan five in their next encoun- ter, the Lipscomb lads barely man- aged to keep a lead and view that final score of 27-24. The following night the reserves were given a chance to break into the starting line-up as the team encountered and beat the White Bluff team 36-26. As the playing season ended, the Mustangs chalked up another win over Hume-Fogg 34- 28. In their final game they beat T. |. S. with no trouble 31-18 and completed the regular This Lipscomb team left one of the best records of any playing season with a good record. team by winning eleven of their games and losing only The tournament got underway with the Mustangs drawing three. Captain Al Bartlett, the only member of the team the East Eagles for their first game. Neck and neck for graduating this year, did a commendable job leading and three quarters, the E agles pulled away the fourth quarter working with the boys under the capable direction of Coach to win 51-25.
