RIDLEY Technician Book Store Technician June, 1945 . . . A. M. Burton, vice-president of the Board of Trustees, digs the first spadeful of dirt for the new Lipscomb Adm nistration Building. ips com Recognizing the need of a four-year Christian college in this section of the country, in the spring of 1945, a group of Nashville's prominent business men agreed to match dollar for dollar all the money that Lipscomb could raise in a drive to make this school a standard four-year college. Vice-President A. C. Pullias was appo‘nted di- rector of this campaign with Willard Collins his associate director. The goal was set at $600,000. Recently this goal was changed from $600,000 to $1,000,000. With genuine interest in youth and Chris- tian education, the leaders and friends of this campaign have worked under the slogan: Remember, every dollar you give means two dollars invested in young people. Lipscomb's present build’ngs and grounds include Hard- ing Hall, Sewell Hall, Elam Hall, Burton Gymnasium, President's Home, and a campus of more than forty acres. Since the campaign was announced, construction work has begun on four new buildings: administration building Men at work on new administration building. b Copan and auditorium, Crisman Memorial Library, Johnson Hall, and a central heating plant. Besides the present build- ings and those under construction, two more buildings are planned under the present expansion program: a new science building and physical education building. The money required for the erection of these buildings and for the additional expense in converting to a four -year college reaches a grand total of $1,056,000. The realization of these high goals and the ultimate establishment of a full university at Lipscomb will require the faithful support and the zealous efforts of every per- son who loves boys and girls. Director A. C. Pullias says, Whatever Christian young people need to learn—a Christian college needs to teach. We owe a debt to the youth of today and tomorrow which can be paid only when we provide for them an education that is genuinely Christian—education that develops the body, trains the mind, and cultivates the soul. March, 1946 ... Director A. C. Pullias and his associate director, Willard Collins, discuss the advantages of a new administration building as construction work nears completion. Mrs. Helena Johnson, known as ' Grand- ma to the students, gives $90,000 for the erection of Johnson Hall, new girls' dormitory. Oscar A. Crisman tf Through the generosity of Mr. B. A. Crisman of Chattanooga and the estate of the late Mr. Oscar A. Crisman, Crisman Memorial Library is now under con- struction on the west side of the Lipscomb campus. This building will provide adequate space for reading rooms, training rooms, and offices, ARCHITECT'S DRAWING OF JOHNSON HALL B. A. His fellow classmates immediately sensed a leader and elected Sims president of the freshman class. His abrupt speech and ready smile have combined in the making of a truly capable Lipscomb leader. A true son of the South, DAVID EAST hails from Birmingham, Alabama. His blushing grin and friendly eyes, along with his real ability, gained for him the title of vice-president of the 1945-46 freshman class. Laughing, vivacious, pretty, and intell’gent is the secretary of this year's class. JANE DUNCAN was the only g'rl elected to serve on the Freshman Board in the fall quarter. When the election of class officers was held, Jane was again chosen to represent her class as a leader. PAUL MILLS is noted for his dry humor in class and on the campus. This year the members of the freshman class decided to elect a humor’st to serve as treasurer of their class. Paul has been an efficent manager for the class of 1946. OVERTURF IRA NORTH MACK CRAIG BROTHER BAXTER'S SENIOR BIBLE CLASS Lead SE), Adding much to classroom and campus life are the young preachers of David Lipscomb College. Regu- lar classroom work interspersed with preaching ap- pointments, prayer meeting, and preachers club is the weekly routine of the average young preacher on the Lips- comb campus. Their loyalty to the Bible, faith in its teaching, and influence on their fellow students make them a most valuable aid in promoting Christian Educa- tion. Sermons practiced before mirrors . . . patiently wait- ing for buses ... all part of the day of a typical min- isterial student. The ringing of a bell in the silence of a study hour brings a welcome pause to the girls of Sewell Hall. Soft slippered feet lead consecrated Christian girls to a few moments of devotion and meditation. Grouped at the feet of one who imparts to them words of gladness and offers to them her life as an example of true Christian service, Sewell Hall girls send silent petitions to the God who will care for them through the approaching night. oth The noisy chatter of a boy's dormitory suddenly becomes hushed as the strains of a sacred hymn ascend from the hearts of Christian young men. Beginning their study hour with a short period of devotion, the boys of Elam Hall can prepare their work with a more sincere effort and can end the cares of a day confident that in sleep God will watch over and protect them. With return’ng veterans being added to the club, Coach was able to form a scrappy quintet. With the school spirit of the student body boosted by the lively pepettes, the Bisons ended the season with a feeling of having done their best. Because of lack of reserves, the boys were not able to cope with some of the larger teams they met, but after defeating the Bisons, the winners could go away assured that they had earned their score and had not merely been given a victory. The Alabamans led most of the game, but in the fading minutes of the tilt the Bisons put on a spirited rally that tied the score as the game ended. The Bisons then went on to win the game in the play-off. JAY CHURCH Jay, the older of the “Church boys as they are known to their opponents, was always one of the men carefully covered by rival guards. Jay asked for only half a chance and with his ability to be calm under fire he usually added zest to a fighting team. RUSSELL HATCHER One of the veterans returning from the Navy, Russell proved to be a decided asset to the Bi- son team. His dependable set shot from the middle of the court helped to pull the team out of many tight spots. His high school experience on the Lipscomb hardwood, coupled with his nat- ural ability, made him stand out in a game as one of the spectacular players. Cheerleaders on Floor During Warm-Up The Bisons opened the season against the Governors w.th a thrilling 35-26 victory. Lipscomb piled up an early lead that the Austin Peay lads were never able to over- come. In this opening game, although the Lipscomb lads were handicapped by inexperience and size, they demon- strated to the visitors that they would make up their hand- icaps by spirit and fight. Busch- mann won in a three minute overtime play-off by one point, making the fi- nal score 16-15. nbranieree The intramural program is the most popular extra- curricular activity on the campus.. Since this program includes almost every game, everyone has a chance to show his ability in some sport. Tournaments are being played continually and the champions rewarded with beaut’ful medals. All-star teams are chosen by ''Fessor'’ and the capta’ns of each of the teams. Certificates of award are given to those who are chosen for this team. Intramural points are given for the number of games that are participated in, and the number of games won. At the end of the year intramural points for each par- ticipant are added up and the boy and girl having the highest number of points rece've a beautiful trophy. Boys’ Basketball Captains are appointed by 'Fessor'’ Boyce and they choose their own teams. Games are played each after- noon between 4:15 and 6:00. Intramurals begin about three weeks afer the fall quarter starts. The first tournament to be held is soft- ball for both boys and girls. After softball, there is touch football for the boys while the girls concentrate on the indoor sports such as basketball and volleyball. In the spring, interest is turned towards the tennis courts, horseshoe diamonds, croquet and badminton courts, as well as archery and shuffleboard. With tournaments being played in all these sports, the students find plenty of recreation to occupy their spare time. Girls’ Basketball BOYS' SOFTBALL Despite the bad weather, this proved to be the high light of the fall sports program. Each team played the other once and the two teams winning the most games were placed in the finals. In this final round the two teams met three times to decide the championship. Kitty Conwell’s crack high schoolers won two out of the three games, thus receiv- ing the title of Softball Champs. TOUCH FOOTBALL This tournament created much interest among the boys, but due to bad weather they were unable to play all the games scheduled. Possibly the outstanding feature of the entire tournament was when Bobby Mason won the game 6-0 for the opposing team by making a touchdown for his opponents. The high school boys this year could easily have been named the hard luck'’ boys. On several occasions the Mustangs played first class basketball through the game, only to fade out in the last few seconds and see their opponents move on to a victory. The boys were small but scrappy and had plenty of fight. They'll be returning all their players except two and ''Coach ' predicts that next year's team will prove trouble to any Nashville team. The Lipscomb Mustangs deserve a word of commendation for their perennial fine display of sportsmanship. The high school team has the unusual distinction of winning the sportsmanship trophy three out of the past four years. This trophy is one of the most coveted awards in the annual Eighth District Tournaments. COACH ALSUP has done a commendable job with the high school Mustangs. His coaching produced one of the best passing and scrapping outfits in the city. When his Mustangs took the floor against their op- ponents you could always expect a clean and hard-tought game from his boys.
