DEVOTIONALS HUMINT Girls’ Evening Devotional When the activities of the day are finished, the girls of Sewell Hall gather in the reception room for a period of worship. The songs, prayers, scripture readings, and inspirational talks help them to keep in mind the greatness and goodness of God. The devotional period gives them a quieted mind, so they can lie down to rest in peace. Knowledge and strength for service, consolation for sorrow, and hope for eternal life bring these young men together for daily com- munion. Uniting their voices in song, they seek a closer union with their Father while losing themselves in the common cause of Christ. HARDEMAN The fall and spring meetings, conducted by the college congregation, are truly eventful occasions in the Lipscomb school year. They are cherished and remem- bered by all the students because of the instruction and inspiration they receive from the hands of such men as Brother John B. Hardeman and Brother H. A. Dixon. These men, in their simple way, proclaimed the Gospel of Christ so that it could be understood by everyone. During these inspiring meetings many souls are brought to Christ and many others are lifted to a higher spiritual standing. Brother C. L. Overturf, a faithful Gospel preacher and minister of the college congregation, aided in directing these meetings. Brother Boles speaking at the Fellowship Dinner The last night of Lecture Week Preachers of the Gospel gather in fellowship Lecture Week at Lipscomb is one of the most outstanding events of the year. It is characterized with many inspiring speeches given by able Gospel preachers, such as Brother H. Leo Boles and Brother Gus Nichols. The students are inspired in the various classes and lectures of these capable men as they speak forth wisdom from God’s divine Book. It is a joy to see all the visiting preachers meet one another, renew old acquaint- ances, and extend the right hand of Christian fellowship to one another. The eventful week is brought to a close by a banquet given in honor of those who have courageously given forty or more years of their life in the service of their Master. T. QO. The various activities of the 1944-45 intramural pro- gram have kept the students busy through the year. The season began with the softball tournaments, and immediately following them came the touch-football contests. These activities gave the spectators many thrills as they sat on the bleachers in Onion Dell during the autumn afternoons. During the winter months basketball tournaments were enjoyed by both boys and girls. Combined with the basketball contests were the golf and free-throw tournaments. GENE Boyce, Director of Intramurals The coming of spring invited the activities of all to the outside, and croquet, shuffleboard, and tennis com- petition began. The Pepettes in their familiar purple and gold uniforms again this year added color and pep to the Lipscomb basketball games. With the drum sounding in their ears—left, right, left, right, left—they marched onto the floor, forming circles, boxes, arches, and letters. There are certain things the Pepettes will always remember— the tryouts, how hard it was to keep in step, how straight every- body walked, how excited when the committee called your num- ber—the scared but happy Pepettes who drilled for the first time at Hillsboro—the valentine made at the T. P. I. game— the look of surprise on Kathleen McCoy’s face when Andrew Brown presented her with a gift from the Pep Squad—tun at the Vanderbilt game. All these incidents linger as fond mem- ories in the hearts of thirty-eight Pepettes. These arti- cles originate in the well-known print shop, governed by Brother Kuykendall and operated by Lipscomb students. Lipscomb depends on this staff to give to them the first report of elections and other important school announcements. The work of the Babbler staff is interspersed with pleasure as they gather for picnics and banquets to discuss their work. For many. years he has served Lipscomb efficiently and faithfully. As a teacher, he gives to his students a knowledge that will prepare them for future life; as a principal, he gives to them a wise and understanding guid- ance. His firmness of will and exactness in purpose have only deepened the love and respect that the stu- dent has for him. A conscientious worker and a devout Chris- tian—these words characterize the prin- cipal of our high school. Tiree Or Eis ae The principal’s office serves . as headquarters for all excuses, absence slips, permissions, and those well- known conferences. Mrs. Hamrick, wife of our principal, dominates this office with her friendly smile and ef- ficient work. Along with her, Miss Willie Frances Hitt, a college senior, serves faithfully. Miss Ann Martin, a senior in our high school, helps daily with other students who serve at their vacant periods. A_ typical scene in Harding Hall is the waiting line that forms at eight o’clock each morning in front of Brother Ham- rick’s office. In Jennings Davis, David Lipscomb High School has found an athlete who will be classed with David Scobey and Pinky Lipscomb in the sports history of this school. Not only is Jennings an outstanding athlete; he is an outstanding student. He entered Lipscomb twelve years ago. Since that time his fine character and ability to get along with people have won for him many friends. Class plays, class offices, Student Board, and the BACKLOG staff are a few of the many activities in which Jennings has participated. Indeed, he is a student who knows and loves Lipscomb. ae es ee ree ee T HES 12974. 5-oM 02S AGING hee COueir The Mustangs have been blessed for the last two sea- sons with the most capable leader as their coach, Peyton Alsup. In 1944, Coach Alsup was greeted with a group of boys not any of which had over a year of varsity ex- perience. This year all but three of those boys returned, and each was willing to do his best to make the team a success. Coach Alsup held a full-time job with the state, but was willing to leave his job each afternoon at four o’clock and coach the team. A fine job of coaching was done under these difficulties, as the year’s record will show. Coach Alsup also was an accomplished referee in the city and was well known for his ability in this ca- pacity throughout the state. Well liked by his boys, will- ing to sacrifice for them, a great admirer of good sports- manship, always patient in his instruction, a man that the team could depend on to teach them the correct basketball technique, a fine Christian gentleman, trusted the team to do as he taught them, always kind, a great handler of boys, willing to work—that’s Coach Alsup. PEYTON ALSUP THE 1945 SEASON After four weeks of hard practice, the Mustangs began the season by defeating Antioch. Inspired by this victory, they proceeded to win eight straight games, including wins over teams like Ryan, Howard, and Hume-Fogg. These victories placed the team at the head of the league standings. Immediately after the Christmas holidays, the Mustangs encountered Ryan High School, and with the pressure definitely upon them they dropped their first game of the season. Playing hot and cold ball for the rest of the season, the Mustangs finished the regular season with nineteen victories and seven losses. A truly remarkable record compared to the inexperienced group of players that greeted Coach Alsup at the beginning of the year. Not since 1937 has the high school produced a team with such a fine record. The high point of the year was the trip to Portland, Tennessee, where the team de- feated the Ninth District champions, Portland High School. Finally the boys, having gained the third seeded position in the Eighth District, dropped their first game of the tournament by the largest margin of the season. Giving no excuses as to the loss, the boys accepted the defeat with tears in their eyes but happy that they had played the game showing true Lipscomb sportsmanship. Both Johnny Temple and Allan Bartlett served faithfully throughout the year, gaining much praise from the coach and the team. It has long been a tradition at Lipscomb for sportsmanship, true sports- manship, to reign high on the field of competition. Lip- scomb teams in the past ha ve been highly commended for their display of this admirable trait which is so con- ducive to the making of fine athletes. Always willing to give their best, fighting the hardest to the last whistle is a must in Lipscomb athletics. As was the case in 1943, the 1945 version of the Mustangs were awarded the trophy for good sportsmanship displayed in the eighth district tournament. Shown at the right is a picture of the award of which the boys represented are truly proud. For many years tennis has been one of the most popular sports at Lipscomb. In the high school the Mustangs are and have been greatly feared for their competitive success in Nashville tennis circles. The year 1943 was the climax of the Mustangs’ effort in this respect, for in that year they won the city championship and annexed the beauti- ful Kendall Cram trophy, which was inaugurated tha t year. Having lost that trophy last year to a fighting West High team, this year the Mustangs have hopes of regaining it. Jennings Davis held down the number one spot for the second straight year and is a co-favorite to win the championship. Bobby Mason, a sophomore, played the num- ber two position, and on this his second year on the team will play on the number one doubles team with Davis. John Netterville, one of the most promising youngsters in tennis circles in Nashville, played the number three position and proved invaluable to the team. Guv Pennington held down the number four spot commendably. Jack Bradshaw, Roger Church, and James Sides, all inexperienced but willing to work, rounded out the team.
