JOHANN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL he village of St. Johann in the District of Pongau, lies in an imposing valley through which today run the main highway and rail connections between the eastern and western sections of Austria. ' Due to its location the history of the village was made by the passage of numerous movements of people through its valley, dating back to the Stone Age. Romans who wandered through the valley discovered gold in the mountains and salt in large quantities. Roman prospectors were sent to exploit this area for the precious metal and salt which was transported back to Rome. In IO74 the village was named St. Johann. Many incidents which occurred caused disastrous results to the numerous churches of St. Johann. The church which stands in St. Johann today, facing west-ward toward the Salzack River, was begun in 1873. The bells of the church rang for the first time on Christmas Day, 1875. Before the outbreak of World War I, St. Johann enjoyed a reputation as being one of the leading ski resorts in Austria. After the War St. Johann began to lose popularity as a ski resort. With the construction of the lift, St. Johann is once again able to compete with the other Austrian, ski resorts. It has built its ski club into the second largest in the Salzburg Province, Badgastein being larger. The population today of the St. Johann Valley is approximately six-thousand. Five years ago St. Johann became the government seat of the surrounding villages. Today the leading occupations in the St. Johann are the glass and textile industries. From St. Johann one can visit the near-by village of Wagraiii where the beautiful Christmas carol ,,Silent Night, Holy Night was written by the village schoolmaster, Joseph Mohr. It was first played at the midnight mass in Wagraiii. Joseph Mohr died on Dec. 4, 1848. He is buried in the front yard of the small church. 121
