Many Tyrolian folk songs are sung throughout Austria and Bavaria. These folk songs, of which there are hundreds, have a harmony and lilc all their own. The lyrics are usually humorous although often disguised in sweet, church-like strains. Some of the songs are patrioticg but they tell of a patriotism that extends no farther than the provincial borders of Tyrol. 120 1 A ' if A 2 S si U ,Y CQ v 5 Xfz F, F: . igmliii xx ' v ST. JOHANN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL he village of St. Johann in the District of Pongau, lies in an imposing valley through which today run the main highway and rail connections between the eastern and western sections of Austria. ' Due to its location the history of the village was made by the passage of numerous movements of people through its valley, dating back to the Stone Age. Romans who wandered through the valley discovered gold in the mountains and salt in large quantities. Roman prospectors were sent to exploit this area for the precious metal and salt which was transported back to Rome. In IO74 the village was named St. Johann. Many incidents which occurred caused disastrous results to the numerous churches of St. Johann. The church which stands in St. Johann today, facing west-ward toward the Salzack River, was begun in 1873. The bells of the church rang for the first time on Christmas Day, 1875. Before the outbreak of World War I, St. Johann enjoyed a reputation as being one of the leading ski resorts in Austria. After the War St. Johann began to lose popularity as a ski resort. With the construction of the lift, St. Johann is once again able to compete with the other Austrian, ski resorts. It has built its ski club into the second largest in the Salzburg Province, Badgastein being larger. The population today of the St. Johann Valley is approximately six-thousand. Five years ago St. Johann became the government seat of the surrounding villages. Today the leading occupations in the St. Johann are the glass and textile industries. From St. Johann one can visit the near-by village of Wagraiii where the beautiful Christmas carol ,,Silent Night, Holy Night was written by the village schoolmaster, Joseph Mohr. It was first played at the midnight mass in Wagraiii. Joseph Mohr died on Dec. 4, 1848. He is buried in the front yard of the small church. 121 FACULTY- Katherine L. It is surrounded by fields of Wheat, groves of olive and fruit trees and vineyards. From our classroom windows we are able to see the blue Medi- terranean on one side and rolling hills covered with cypress trees on the other. Near the villa one sees teams of White oxen plowing the fields and women Washing clothes at an old Well. Villa La Leecia is over Q00 years old and was once a convent. With best Regards to the Class of 1954,' COLONEL J. L. PERSON COMMANDING OFFICER LEGHORN LEGHORN AMERICAN SCHOOL VILLA LA LECCIA Our hand-carved front door is indeed a Work of art. It was brought lmere from the island of Cyprus many years ago. We are enjoying our year in the Tuscan bills. I The most famous Italian musician of this part of Italy is Giacomo Puccini. Cur section of the yearbook is dedicated to his immortal melodies. Giacomo Puccini was an Italian com- poser. His works include some of the most popular of all operas. He was born at Lucca, Italy, on De- cember 2, 1858, into a family of musi- cians. In 1880 he entered the Milan Con- servatory and studied composition. In 1893 Puccini,s MANON LES- CAUT was produced. It won immediate success. LA BOI-IEME, the most lovable of all his operas, which followed in 1896, was considered a still greater triumph. LA TGSCA, MADAME BUTTERFLY and GIRL OF TI-IE GOLDEN WEST, pro- duced between 1000 and 1910, showed Giacomo Puccini 185851924 new sides of Puccini's ability. In 1926, his last opera, TURANDOT, was sung for the first time at Milan, Italy, two years after Puccini's death. Franco Alfano had completed the writing of this opera. Puccini had a sense of the theatre unsurpassed even by Verdi, and no man has ever known howto translate a theatrical situation into music with so few rapid, vivid strokes. Perhaps the best measure of his outstanding qualities is that since his death nobody has succeeded in writing an opera that commands universal allegiance.
