We know not what the future holds, Whether poverty, wealth or fame: But we must strive throughout our lives To win ourselves a name. The twelve high steps we had to climb To reach this great threshold Were climbed with many smaller steps, Some fa ltering, some bold. And 'tho the guiding hands of teachers Cannot be dismissed with a nod, We now must place our future In the guiding hand of God. As we stand on the future's threshold, We ponder a moment o'er the pastg We've reached the key to the future: Graduation - we clasp it at last. Nancy Hunter Poet 5, f ri'-X W ffm . -ws..- jfsfory Strolling down Memory Lane, we remember a day back in 1953 when thirty eager boys and girls became green freshmen. We were enthusiastic and hoped to accomplish a great deal in our four years at Linwood High School. As freshmen, our leaders were: Mr. I. L. Gathings and Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Yarborough. The class officers were: President, Charles Grahamg Vice President, Jane Greerg Secretary, Bar- bara Floydg and Treasurer, Charles Kinley. We were fortunate in having Gene Byerly crowned Harvest King and Jean Rodgers as Christmas Queen, Miss Linwood High and Miss Davidson County from our class. The following year, under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Yarborough and Mr. J. L. Gathings, we reached the second milestone of our high school career. Our class officers were: President, Dewitte Domang Vice President, Jane Greerg Secretary, Charles Grahamg and Treasurer, Mary Hudson. During the year we lost Univee Coffey, Barbara Floyd, Martha Paige Shoaf, Henry Kearns, and Ben McCarn. Mary Clodfelter decided to join us from Southmont. We were well re- presented with queens that year. They were: Harvest Queen, Jane Greerg Miss Linwood High, Mary Hudsong and Homecoming Queen, Mary Clodfelter. In 1955 we reached our third milestone - the Junior Class. Our leaders were: Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Yarborough, Mrs. W. P. Williams, and Mr. T. K. Huss. We had a very successful year with Charles Graham, Presidentg Clara Van Tysinger, Vice Presidentg Martha Coppley, Sec- retaryg Nancy Hunter, Treasurerg and Charles Kinley, Sergeant-at-Arms. Robert Franks. Jimmy Woodall, Johnny Everhart and Wayne Medlin left us during the year. Jane Greer left to take up studies at Lexington Senior High School. Maxine Hedrick and Betty Lou Waller decided to join our Junior Class. Several honors were again won by our class. They wereg Harvest Queen, Maxine Hedrickg Christmas Queen, Clara Vann Tysingerg Miss Linwood High, Mary Clodfelter: and Harvest King, Charles Kinley. The marshals were: Jean Rodgers, Chief, Nancy Hunter, Marie Cooper, Dewitte Doman, and Charles Graham. With much help and patience, Mrs. Paul V. Yarborough assisted us in giving a very successful Junior-Senior banquet. The banquet was held at the Dutch Club and a Hawaiian theme was used. Everyone enjoyed it and went home with many memories. Our final stop was in the Senior Class. There we lost Charles Kinley and Don Leonard through marriage. Shirlie Kester joined us from Florida to complete her education. Our chief leader was Mrs. Leonard Sykes, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Yarborough and Miss Bessie Greer. Our class officers were: President, Martha Coppleyg Vice President, Nancy Hunterg Sec- retary, Clara Vann Tysinger, and Treasurer, Jean Rodgers. As seniors, Catharine Swink and Bill Smith were crowned Harvest Queen and King, and Jean Rodgers was chosen chief cheerleader. Clara Vann Tysinger received several honors. She was selected Miss Linwood High and Christmas Queen. She also participated in county and regional beauty contests and was crowned Miss Veterans' Day for Davidson County and Miss Queen of the Piedmont, having the unique honor of beingcrowned by Miss America of 1956 in the latter event. During the Christmas holidays, Martha Coppley married Don Stokes, but returned to school to complete her education with us. Now the big moment has really arrived - graduation! As we think of this and of our accom- plishments, we have our first pang of sadness. We feel the teachers have done their best for us and have been very helpful in solving many of our problems. We are reluctant to leave our classmates, our faculty, and our school. Yet we must say - goodbye! Catharine Swink Historian 2 5908 00585280 6 Easf a120ff7esfa122e12f We. the Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Seven Senior Class of Linwood High School, being of sound mind, realizing that we may be the last to graduate here, do make and publish this our last will and testament. To our parents, we leave our love and appreciation for their guidance throughout our school years. To the faculty, we express our gratitude for their patience with and advice to us. To the school, we give assurance that we will always have fond memories of the hours spent here. To the Junior Class, we leave the expectation of being seniors in the new school. To the Sophomore Class, we leave the opportunity of working toward and planning the Junior-Senior banquet. To the Freshman Class, we leave the desire to strive to make the best of their high school career. The individuals of our class make the following bequests: Constance Ballew wills her position on the basketball team to Madge Tester. Teenie Byerly wills his position as most athletic to Danny Rhodes. Danny, remember the referee is always right. Mary Clodfelter leaves her ability to play basketball to William Dennis. Marie Cooper wills her ability to drive a car to Evelyn Brown. Betty Ann Coppley leaves her quiet ways to Rosemary Miller, Remember, Rosemary, silence is golden. Martha Coppley Stokes bequeaths her knack to get into a little bit of everything to Bobby Wallace. Dewitte Doman leaves his position as president of the French Club to Mervin Rowe. Mervin, do a good job. Maxine Hedrick wills her ease to take teasing about the peroxide hair to Bob Hudson. Bob, you'll have to peroxide your hair first. Mary Elizabeth Hudson leaves her ability to play basketball and to wear straight skirts to Sara Cox. Nancy Hunter wills her ability to take teasing, and also, her title of wittiest, to Tommy Mann. Be careful, Tommyg don't try to make witty remarks in Mrs. Sykes' classes. Shirlie Kester bequeaths her abilityt to type to Pat Leonard. Helen Lookabill leaves her record of never being in trouble to Linda Beck. Shirley Medlin leaves her quiet ways to Jimmy Kinney. Catharine Swink wills her ability to attract the opposite sex to Zach T rexler. Clara Van Tysinger wills her ability to sing and play the piano to Carol Starr. Betty Waller leaves her friendly disposition to David Breedlove. Bruce Yarbrough wills his school bus to Don Berrier. Don, don't oversleep in the mornings Bonnie Taylor wills her shyness to Farrell and Odell Floyd. It will take both of you to use all of it. I. D. Davis leaves his seat in the back of the room to Wilfred Owens and Wayne Parks. Don 't try to use it at the same time, boys. Bill Smith wills his ability to pass French to Charles Beck. Study hard, Charles. Jean Rodgers wills her position as cheerleader to Rachel Coppley. Rachel, don't get a cold before the first ball game. I. Chuck Graham, will my ability to get along with teachers to Jerry Hayes. Be careful what you say, Jerry. We, the members of the Senior Class of 1957. do hereby declare this to be the only valid statement of our last will and testament, any previous ones being null and void upon the signing of this document. Chuck Graham Testator 7j!'Op5QCy For the Graduating Class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-SCVGI1. I predict the following: Since Dewitte Doman is so crazy about Colorado, he will marry his Goldie and settle there in the wide open spaces for a ranch life. Helen Lookabill will make very good use of her life as a missionary, whether it be in foreign lands or in our. own United States. Clara Vann Tysinger's singing talent and beauty will bring her success. She will go to college and there be discovered by a talent scout. Betty Ann Coppley will remain in Lexington, working her way to the top in Efird's De- partment Store. Teenie Byerly will go to Wake Forest and become an all-American basketball star. After college, he will find some rich doll to marry. Bruce Yarbrough will eventually have his own hosiery corporation - perhaps the largest in the state. Since nurses' training appeals to Mary Clodfelter, I think she will become a nurse. Aft- er her training, she will marry the man in her life and follow him wherever his vo- cation takes him. Bill Smith and Catharine Swink will be married soon after graduation. Bill will follow his father in farming, while Catharine will be a member of The Dispatch staff. Jean Rodgers will marry within six months after graduation and move away from Lex- ington. Later, she will take a business course, but soon thereafter, she will give up her career to rear a family. Maxine Hedrick will marry and then work toward her own dress shop. Maxine will set a fashion with her neat grooming. Betty Lou Waller and Shirley Medlin will probably remain in Lexington for a small town life. They will choose either a career or marriage. I. D. Davis will have his own meat market. It will be a modern glass building with every new device. Marie Cooper will acquire the largest wardrobe and best looking car in town. After graduation, Shirlie Kester will go back to Florida to become a hostess in a swanky nightclub. Nancy Hunter will go to college and work on a career of her choice. Her life will never be dull. Bonnie Taylor will go back to Boone some day to get married and lead the role of a housewife. Chuck Graham will go to college and then perhaps to a military academy. Whatever he does, I am sure he will succeed. Mary Elizabeth Hudson will plan her life cautiously. She will marry and probably be content with a close family life. Her knack for making people happier will continue. Constance Ballew will find a job in which she will be able to travel. If she tires of this, she will come back to Lexington. I, Martha Coppley Stokes, plan to study art while doing my duty as a housewife. May good fortune smile on all of us as we leave these portals to fulfill our dreams and aspirations!
