It is they who have given us love, confidence, as- sistance, and encouragement when we needed it most. Although our gratitude and appreciation to you may be expressed in such a small way, it is meant directly from our hearts. As we go out into the future, may you, our parents, see that all your efforts were not in vain. With deepest appreciation we dedicate this annual to our parents. Stairs of Gold Looking down upon the stairs, The golden stairs below, We see the milestones of our lifeg Our fun and strife they show. The Freshman step unlocked the door For us to wander through, Adjusted us to high school, And showed us what to do. The stairway led us higher, Through subjects taught with care: And now we're at the threshold Of a new and different stair. Although we've only started, And our future fate's unknowng We're prepared as Seniors For decisions made alone. Our first day in high school will always stand out in our rninds, because we received 500 sentences for talking. Under the leadership of Mr. Gathings, we elected the following officers for the year: President, Janet Wilsong Vice President, Lorraine Kinney, Secretary, Barbara Everhartg Treasurer, Ruth Cole. The following year. under the guidance of Mrs. P. V. Yarborough, we reached the second door of our high school career. Our officers were: President, Darlene Kinney: Vice President, Carol Coppleyg Secretary, Charlene Bellg Treasurer, Johnny McCarn. Our class presented an Arthur Godfrey program in assembly. We also had our Christmas party in the home of Doris Cox. In our Junior year of high school we were guided by Mr. P. V. Yarborough, with Charles Kennedy, President, Tommy Holmes, Vice President: Ann Hen- drix, Secretaryg Charlene Bell, Treasurer. We had a successful year. We all were excited as we received our class rings and planned our banquet. The an- nual Iunior-Senior Banquet was held at the Sheraton Hotel in High Point. We chose the Mardi Gras as the theme for our banquet. Then in the fall of 1955 we reached the last door of our high school ca- reer. We were Seniors. This year we had a new guide, Mrs. W. P. Williams, and we welcomed back our first grade principal, Mr. T. K. Huss. Lorraine Kinney served as President of our class. Barbara Everhart acted as Vice President Charlene Bell, Secretary, and Ann Hendrix, Treasurer. Now at last we are stepping out of this door into a much newer and higher one. The view is broad and hard indeed, but now a veil of sadness comes over us for now we must leave our dear classmates, our teachers and guides, and our schoolg yet we must say Farewell. Wdlmd We, the Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-six Senior Class of Linwood High School, being of sound mind, and realizing our impending departure from this school, do make and publish this last will and testament. To the school, we bequeath our love, sweet memories, and deep appreciation for all the oppor- tunities we have had at Linwood High School. To the faculty, we leave our deepest appreciation for their efforts toward increasing our wisdom. To our parents, we leave our love and gratitude for their guidance and support which has made our high school education possible. To the Junior Class, we leave the dearest possession we have, the pleasure and many memories of being Seniors. To the Sophomore Class we leave the privilege of attending a Junior-Senior Banquet. To the Freshman Class, we leave our hopes that before long they will occupy the position that we now hold. The Individuals of our class make the following bequests: Martha Briggs leaves her height to Clara Vann Tysinger. Doris Cox leaves her ability to catch Marines to Mary Elizabeth Hudson. Shirley Hayes wills her friendly disposition to Mary Clodfelter. Tommy Holmes leaves his curiosity to Johnny Everhart. Margaret Trantham and Charles Kennedy leave their good promises of the future to Marie Cooper and Dewitte Doman. Ann Hendrix leaves her ability to blush to Nancy Hunter and Bruce Yarbrough. Darlene Kinney and John Sharpe will their personality to Catherine Swink and Chuck Graham. Charlene Bell leaves her desire to be a nurse to Betty Ann Coppley. Charlie Smith leaves his position as best citizen to Wayne Medlin. Barbara Everhart leaves her position as chief cheerleader to Jean Rodgers. Buddy Rodgers leaves his perfect attendance record to Sonny Kinley. Eunice Beck leaves her ability to guard little girls to Constance Ballew. Johnny McCarn and Carol Coppley leave their positions as most athletic to Martha Coppley and Gene Byerly. Carrie Everhart leaves her quiet ways to Maxine Hedrick. Betty Mae Yarbrough leaves her wit to Shirley Medlin and Helen Lookabill. Hazel Rodgers wills her ability to work geometry to Don Leonard and J. D. Davis. Ruth Cole Earp wills her ability to catch a husband to Bonnie Taylor. I, Lorraine Kinney, will my big Orange Blossom Special to Bill Smith. We, the Members of the Senior Class of 1956, do hereby solemnly proclaim this to be the only valid statement of our last will and testament, any previous ones being null and void upon the signing of this document. Lorraine Kinney T estator P Well, I guess it's the gypsy in me - I don't know any other reason for being chosen to foretell the class prophecy. I will now gaze into this crystal ball to see what the future holds for this grand class of 1956. Turn onward, turn onward Oh time in your flight Let me see the graduates of '56 Ten years from tonight! Charlene Bell is at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, where she is the Superintendent of Nurses. Ann Hendrix is married to a wealthy man and lives in Califomia. She spends most of her time eating oranges and soaking in that California sun. Charlie Smith has gone far in the agricultural field. He is owner of one of the best farms in North Carolina. Margaret Trantham is now a county supervisor in schools in Florida. Looks as if her four years at A.S.T.C. have paid off. What's this I see? Service men by the dozens. I believe there has been a military wedding and here comes the lucky bride. Why, it's Betty Yarborough. Don't believe I recognize the groom. Shirley Hayes is a private secretary for her husband, who owns a large advertising agency in Greensboro. Lorraine Kinney is happily married and living on a large farm in the big city of High Rock. I see at least a dozen children playing in their yard. She said they were cheaper that way. Eunice Beck is coaching basketball at U.N .C. She shows her team how to knock 'em dead. Johnny McCarn is still a bachelor. He likes his life foot loose and fancy free. Ruth Cole Earp lives in Boone with her husband. They have just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary. Barbara Everhart has completed her business course and is a secretary in Washington, D.C. Her husband teaches school there. Martha Ann Briggs has an office job at Siceloff's, where the rest of her family is employed. I see the former Darlene Kinney and Tommy Holmes are living in Baltimore, where Tommy is president of a big defense plant. Buddy Rodgers has married a former Linwood graduate and is now part owner of Wennonah Cot- ton Mill. Carol Ann Coppley is the wife of a very properous New York business man. She and her husband have recently spent a month touring France. I see Hazel Rodgers ready to get on a TWA to fly to Hawaii. After graduation, Hazel became an airline hostess and has given up marriage completely for this career. As I look into the crystal ball, I see a dog. Wait! It's a Greyhound bus, with Charles Kennedy as its driver. John Sharpe, a prosperous farmer, owns and operates a large dairy farm near Linwood. Take a letter, please, Miss Carrie Everhart. She is secretary to the president of the largest bank in Linwood. After finishing my business course, I married that Camp Lejeune fellow! At present we are liv- ing in Ohio where he is president of a pottery plant. Finally, I see good fortune smiling on all of us according to the old proverb, Success comes to those who deserve it.
