L. Gathings, Principal During my long period of continuous service at Linwood School, there have been pinnacles of satisfaction and valleys of darkness, but there has ever been a steady purpose guid- ing the destinies of the school. My one purpose has always been to better our community and to make better men and women of the graduates of Linwood High School. My best wishes go with the class of nineteen hundred and fifty five, and I will always treasure fond memories of the days they have spent here. During this time many changes have taken place in our class. As we face the future, it will give us great pleasure to live again some of the events that stand out in our memory. On September 3, 1952, twenty-six bashful girls and boys entered the freshman class of Linwood High. Most of us were green as could be, but, under the guidance of Mrs. Yarborough, we elected the following officers for the year: President, David Smith, Vice-President, Frances Byerly, Secretary, Anita Jarrattg Treasurer, Max Bell, During our first year of high school we gained Shirley Potts and Fred Barber. We lost Louise Woodall, Leroy McCarn, David Kearns,James Martin, Barbara Cole, Edna Waller, and Rebecca Keever. We were proud to have Linda Briggs chosen as Miss Linwood High. She was also crowned Harvest Queen at the annual Halloween Carnival, The following year, under the leadership of Mr. Yarborough, Mrs. Yarborough, and Mr. Gathings,we reached the second milestone of our high school career. Our officers were: President, Max Bell, Vice-President, Barbara Ragang Secretary, Sarah Wilson, Treasurer, Betty Sue Bell. During the year we lost Marilynn Hedrick and Jimmy Flynn. We had our class party at the Country Club. Everyone really enjoyed this outing. During this year we had many queens elected from our room. We were proud to have Sarah Wilson represent us in the Christmas parade, while Linda Briggs was chosen Homecom- ing Queen and Frances Byerly was crowned Science Club Queen. The boys were not entirely overlooked. We were proud to have Jimmy Leonard receive the honor of being Harvest King at the fall Halloween festival. In our Junior year of high school we were led by Mr. Yarborough, as home room sponsor, and Mrs. Yarborough, Mrs. Cox, and Mr. Gathings. With Anita Jarratt, Pres- identg Linda Briggs, Vice-President, Frances Byerly, Secretary, David Smith, Treasurer, we launched a most successful year, All of us were excited as we received our class rings, planned our banquet, went to class parties and many other activities. The annual Junior-Senior Banquet was held at the Woman's Club in Thomasville. During this year we lost Shirley Potts, Jimmy McCarn, Barbara Ragan, and Claudia Briggs. Having completed three years of high school, at last we arrived at the beginning of our Senior year. Under the direction of Mrs. Cox, we elected our officers for the year: Fred Barber, President, Jimmy Jarrett, Vice-President, Elizabeth Kirk, Secretary, and Max Bell, Treasurer, Louise Clodfelter joined our class at the beginning of the year. Our accomplishments during the year included the successful publication of the eighth edition ofthe Linden Leaves. We were also honored at the Annual Halloween Festival when Bill Wilson was crowned Harvest King. We are happy and proud to be seniors. Any note of sadness is overcome by the joy we feel in reaching this goal, graduation. As we leave Linwood, our class motto remains in our hearts - Not finished, just begun. David Smith, who is also a New York Industrial Designer, agreed to go with me. At the airport, we discovered the pilot of the rocket was Hoyle Mann, a former Linwood classmate, now a rocket pilot for American Airlines. Since the rocket was scheduled to refuel in Washington, David and I decided to go by the Capital Theatre to see Louise Leonard, who was giving a concert at the theatre, We were happy to hear that she had just signed a contract to appear at Ciro's, along with other famous musicians, such as Liberace. Resuming our flight, we discovered a fellow passenger to be none other than the former Sarah Wilson, now Mrs. Rock Hudson. Sarah was on her way to Miami to join her spouse who was making a picture there. In a matter of minutes, the plane had landed at Municipal Airport in Lexington. After renting a ground jet from Ned Briggs' Jet Rental Service, we stopped by Bell and Peacock Fuel Service to fill up our tanks. There we were greeted by Bill Wilson, manager of the Lexington branch of Bell and Peacock, in which Max Bell held controlling interest. As we drove along admiring the Sliding Acres Farm , owned and operated by Robert Sheets, Ned Briggs appeared on his two-way auto TV set and told us that if we hurried on over to the Lexington Memorial Hospital, we would be able to catch Fred Barber, now a surgeon at Mayo Clinic, who had stopped by Lexington to check on a former patient, Speeding to the hospital, we met Fred in the lobby, where he was talking to Elizabeth Kirk, the head nurse there. After a pleasant chat with these two former classmates, I decided we needed something to eat that was a Little more substantial than our energy tablets, so we stopped by Clodfelter's Steak House. Although we missed seeing Louise, who was proprietress of the establishment, we were treated to some fine sirloin. With our appetites appeased, we set out to find Jim Leonard, who was now managing the Briggs SL Leonard Lumber Co. His wife, Linda, was a designer for a Chicago chain of department stores. We found Jim at this office, where we also saw Barbara Swing, lim's secretary. Jim joined us in a search for Ronnie Starr, head coach of the Purple Panthers football team, state champions for the third straight year. We finally cornered Ronnie in the Lexington High Gymn where he and the Lexington coach werebusy scheduling a game. Ronnie told us that Margaret Beck had supplanted Mrs. Cox as French teacher at Linwood High, While looking for Mary Sneed, who was playing with the Hanes Hosiery Girl's basketball team, we saw you coming down the steps of the First Baptist Church, and it was then I learned that you were Director of Religious Education there, On the way to search for Mary we saw Betty Sue Bell and T. L. shopping for groceries. We found Mary in the City Auditorium, where her team was to play a game that evening. Mary informed us she was still maintaining a twenty point average in spite of her advanced age. Well, I would like very much to write more, but I must get busy on some drawings for Fran Byerley, who is married to a Wall Street tycoon and is erecting a large apartment building here in New York. Give my love to all. Your cousin, lim Jarrett 25 LIFE WITH THE SENICR arms' ' A N' ' .1 1 f X V , 1- .fu fi, . ,. I A ' 5 .2-1 knew . . U ,f E ' I 'I' K ,. 1 , ,fn X VJ 4? -vlfvaffy Wu!
