CUTEST Vonnie Adkins - Taylor Humphries CLASS PROPHECY My! This bag of tools that I have been carrying for these past four years is getting so heavy.I think Ishall stop and relax for a few moments. Well! Here I am,on the stepping stones of life, looking upward into the future. Let's take a peek into the year of 1964 and see what has developed from rhatshapeless mass that my classmates and I began to work with in the beginning of our high school career. Looking outwards among the clouds, I see in the distance a lovely young lady on Long Beach,California.Just look at all her admirers. She must be a famous Hollywood celebrity, Yes, it is no other than the famous Edith Rose Brown. She isn't as timid as in her former days. Drifting along with the clouds over the Pacific Ocean, there appears a hugh ship below in the deep blue. To my astonishment it's Sue Kinney, a Captain in the U. S. Waves, on deck. She has been around the world lgwicile and knows all the ports by hearty but there is only one sailor at her harbor and that is her Admiral hus- an . Wandering wistfully through the big state of Texas, I discover a spacious and lovely ranch. To my sheer amazement, I find that it is owned by Vonnie Adkins' father. They have moved back to Texas and Vonnie is her dad's secretary. She does a lot of trick riding in her spare time and is one of the cowboys' favorite. My! How time is flying. I'd better journey on. Oops! About ran into an airplane. How stupid, that's the Empire State Building that I practically ran into. There is an attractive young lady -wait! Of all people! lt's Helen Gobble. What a beautiful building at Tobe- Coburn College where she finished her fashion course. She's one of the best.l'm glad to see that she gave her talent a chance. Here's an interesting couple to observe. A journalist is writing something on a scratch pad. It's Ioan Rod- gers taking a few notes on the life of the Yankee's ace pitcher, Wayne Sechrest. They seem to be chatting over old times. They were former classmates. ' Iwonder if Taylor Humphries has ever made it to General Motors in Deutoit. We'll find out now. Well! He did. He is supervising the workers in the plant. He has acquired his goal, Supervisor of General Motors. Now, I wonder what happened to Cora. There's Cora now. She has come after Taylor for dinner. They are go- ing home to one of Cora's perfect meals. What happened to Mary Smith and Becky Wrenn? Oh! I haven't forgotten them. Shall we go to Florida? Here we are, and there is Becky, picking oranges from her husband's orange grove. Miami is so beautiful. No wonder Becky likes it so well. Just look at all the lovely tourist cabins. There's a young woman who is going to be baked if she doesn't get out of the sun. She is leaving now.Mary Smith! I hardly knew her. Look at that diamond sparkling on her finger. Some lucky guy to get her! What a day for surprises. I guess I'd better drift back toward North Carolina. Below, I see a huge farm. No--not one, but two. Both of the farms look extremely neat. Those two appear to be disagreeing alittle down there. Taking a second glance, I see that they are Lynn Jarratt and Leonard Lopp, Leonard is trying to per- suade Lynn not to be so set in his ways and not to be such a confirmed, old bachelor. Leonard, himself is very hagplily married. Except for Lynn's ideas about marriage, they get along fine, Lynn and his dogs and Leonard an is wi e. Getting nearer to Lexington, Isee Hazel Burris's Beauty Nook. She is quite a success. Everyone raves about her hair styles. She's so successful that she is thinking about opening a chain of shops. Well, I'm back where I started from, and I must say the future looks very bright for my old C13SS1'1'13tCS of '54- Prophet of '54 Letha Owens CLASS HISTORY ' 'nto the ear 1950.1 see twenty-eight young boys and girls arriving at the freshman door of Linwgggkgiihgagfhhol, eager to begin work on a shapeless mass called the future, Our teachers, Mrs. Yarbo- rough, and Mr. Gathings, supplied us with equipment which consisted of various tools and plenty of rules. We chose the following class officers for our first year of high school tIaininggPres1dent, Frances Alleyg V1ce-Pres- ident, Jimmy Rodgersg Secretary, Helen Gobbleg Treasurer, Sue Kinney. During the year several of our mem- bers left us to seek training in other schools. They were: Betty Loy, Frances Waller, Frances Alley, Norrne Everhart Mary Frances Gobble, Doris Belk, Nancy Snyder, and Pete Woodall, along with Gene Keever and Shirley Tysinger, who had joined us at the beginning of the year. The class party was held with the Sophomores atthe Country Club. Hotdogs, cheeseburgers, and all the trimmings were served, while tennis was the main sport. Hey! If anyone wishes to learn to jitterbug, come see Mrs. Yarborough, She was giving free lessons that night. The following year under the leadership of Mr, Yarborough, Mrs.Yarborough, Mrs. Cox, and Mr.Gathings, we began work to conquer the second stumbling block of our high school days. We elected Helen Gobble as Presidentg Betsy Palmer as Vice -Presidentg Sue Kinney as Secretary, and Hazel Burris as Treasurer. Christine Barber, Taylor Humphries, and Lynn Jarratt joined our little Sophomore band, but Donese Roach, Bennie Bruch, and Elmo Ashby quit school. Betsy Palmer left us for Lexington High. In May, with Mrs. Yarborough, Mr. Yarborough, and Alma Jarratt, as chaperones, the class and about fif- teen visitors took a campus tour of Duke University and the University of North Carolina. The main events were a picnic lunch at the Forest Hill Theatre and the show, Halos and Rainbows, at the Morehead Plane- tarium. We held our class party in the school cafeteria with recreation in the gym. That's the day Mr. Yarborough learned how to play volley ball with broken glasses. Our Junior year of high school was led by Mrs. Yarborough, Mr.Yarborough , Mr, Gathings, and Mrs. Cox, with Christine Barber as President, Helen Gobble as Vice-President, Edith Brown as Secretary, and Hazel Burris as Treasurer. With Mrs. Yarborough as chief leader, we were able to sponsor the annual Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Winston Salem. The theme was Oriental Gardens. Ask Cora Smith how it feels to sport a diamond at such an occasion! Also this year, Miss Helen Gobble, one of our classmates, was chosen from the high school to represent us in the Christmas Parade. Before the year was over, Jean Mode joined our class and Buddy Taylor, Jimmy Rogers, and Harold Mann quit school. Having conquered three stumbling blocks of our high school days, we arrived at senior door, eager to be- gin work of the last, but greatest year,We got off to a good start with Mrs.Cox as Senior advisor, Mrs. Yarbo- rough, Mr. Yarborough, and Mr. Gathings as assistants. The class chose the following officers: President, Edith Browng Vice-President, Sue Kinneyg Secretary, Hazel Burrisg Treasurer, Helen Gobble. Christine Barber, one of our classmates, having completed the eleventh grade and sixteen units, was able to enter High Point College. Bertha Garrison, Vonnie Adkins, Franklin Former, and Bobby Billings joined our class at the beginning of the year, however, Bertha,Franklin, and Bobby left during the first two months. Under the direction of Mrs. Cox, we were able to put on a one-act comedy entitled The Uninvited Ghost. It would probably have taken a real ghost to have attracted attention that night. We were proud to have two Queens selected from our class. Vonnie Adkins was crowned Queen of the Harvest and Helen Gobble was crowned Homecoming Queen. The three main highlights of our Senior year were the class play, Act Your Age ,our trip to Washington, D. C., and the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our class, though considerably small, was able to publish the seventh edition of the LINDEN LEAVES. Hazel Burris Historian 2 5908 00585278 0 LAST wut AND IESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of Linwood High School of 1954, being of average intelligence and of sound mind do hereby make, bequeath, and publish this, our Last Will and Testament, to bestow upon those we leave be, hind our worthless but coveted possessions.
