Homecoming Week And Homecoming Dance Bed time Children! Who's that behind those Foster Grant's? The Sheik! Seniors got it together for Spirit Week. Pucker up pig porkers! Watching the action! 32 'Stepping to the beat.' Bet your heart on me.1 The 1981-82 Homecoming week was exciting from start to finish. Tuesday with it's Kiddie Day, and thumb sucking. Wednesday with it's hat and ties, including a strange looking sheik. Thursday groups of blue, red, gray and yellow paraded the halls of LHS. On Friday, to finish the week off was the usual Purple and Gold Day. At the Pep Rally held on Friday, Mrs. Ann Starlin, Principal, and Mr. Walter Hare, Basketball Coach, were elected by the LHS students to kiss a Pig- To add a final touch to Friday evening there was a dance which followed the Homecoming game. The music was provided by Browney Lee, from Disco 2000. The Student Council did a fantastic job with the Homecorriing activities. Hold on! 'Slow dancing.' Ten years later.' 33 Homecoming ’81-,82 It was The Best of Times for Melody Bjorgaard when Student Council sponsor, Carolyn Sawka, announced her as the new 1981 Homecoming Queen on October 29, 1981. Martha Oelschlaeger, the 1980 Homecoming Queen, assisted in the crowning ceremony. Donna DeMaranville and Kelly Pickett were the princess candidates. The 1981 football team displayed more pride and courage than any team I have coached. Our win-loss record was not indicative of the efforts put out by these guys. It would have been easy to give up at mid-season with only 12 squad members but instead we made it a rallying point, determined to complete the season competitively and at the same time keep a sense of humor and have some fun. These guys are to be commended for the manner in which they represented the school and community. There are just too many people here who do not represent the school at all. Using this depth along with individual and team efforts, the team accomplished the astonishing feat of victory over numerous teams. With strong competition the Lady Bulldogs received 2nd in the Oskaloosa Quadrangular. The Bulldogs for the first year received 2nd place in the Two Trails League. The Bulldogs completed a 7-13 record. Although the Bulldogs will be losing the experience of the seniors, the returning juniors, sophomores, and freshmen are still look- ing forward to an even more spectacular future. As in the past, lack of numbers proved to be an insur- mountable obstacle in dual competition. Even with this team disadvantage, however, several wrestlers posted outstanding season records. In- juries sidelined senior Alan Randle before post season competition. Senior Glenn Brock and ju- nior Todd Holmes were able to advance all the way to the state tournament at Hays. In addition Donavon McCleary showed great improvement through the season in his first year of wrestling and should be a strong competitor in future sea- sons along with returning letterman Todd Holmes. 1981-82 Wrestlers: Donavon McCleary, Todd Holmes, Glenn Brock. In State Competition INDIVIDUAL RECORD Glenn Brock 17-7 Todd Holmes 16-10 Alan Randle 7-3 Donavon McCleary 5-9-1 Richesin Qualifies For State Competition Some new highlights were added to the la- dies track records for the '82 year. Sandy Peter- son tied the record for the high jump, while Megan Richesin set school records for the half mile, the 1 mile, and the 2 mile. The ladies track team also went to the Two Trails League meet in which they set 6 records. Megan also quali- fied for state competition in which she came in 12th place. Dug Harris was responsible for setting the new high jump record 6'3‘ 2 while Alan Randle was busy trying the school pole vault record. At the season finale, Dug also set the league record at the first ever Two Trail League meet by taking first and setting the school record at this meet. Dug also quali- fied for state competition held at Wichita, Kansas in the high jump in which Dug came out with a 8th place. Mens Track Team Alan Randle, Perry Stouffer, Glenn Brock, Dug Harris, Todd Holmes, Arnold Stradt, Coached By Don Hills. LHS Athletes Strive For Team And Individual Honors In First Year Of Two-Trails League Competition Now that the Linwood High School Bull- dogs are members of the Two Trails League there are certain advantages added to the sports programs. Besides the possibility of winning a league championship individual honors are now bestowed on the athletes in the form of All-League and Honorable Men- tion selections. For Valleyball they were Melody Bjorgaard and Lorinda Harrington for All-League team. Donna DeMaranville was named to the Hon- orable Mention squad. In Football Albert Colnar, Jay Johnson and Perry Stouffer were named to the All-League Offensive Team and Albert Colnar and David King were named to the All-League Defen- sive Team. In Basketball Gail Colnar, Jean Shell, and Kelly Pickett were named to the All-League Team while Donna DeMaranville was named to the Honorable Mention Team. The men named to All-League Basketball were Ernie Montgomery to All-League team; Jay Johnson and Marc Burns to Honorable Mention. The LHS Track team brought home seven 1st place finishes from the All-League meet at Burlingame. They were as follows: Denise Bradshaw, 400m; Megan Richesin, 800m and 3200m; Gail Colnar, Long Jump; Leanne Smith, 100m and 200m and Dug Harris in the High Jump. This year the choir chose to perform Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway hit South Pacific. The choir put forth a lot of time and energy into this year's production and the work paid off. The musical was a success. All three evening performances were sold out and the musical was highly praised by students and par- ents alike. The setting of the musical was a beautiful Pacific Island. The lead characters were Nellie Forbush, played by senior Lorinda Harrington who won the lead for the fourth con- secutive year and Emile De Becque, played by sophomore Perry Stouffer. Nellie falls in love with Emile but is con- stantly plagued with doubts about her love for him. One of the more colorful characters is the Tokinese woman known as Bloody Mary. This character was fantas- tically portrayed by senior Janie Rose. Bloody Mary deals in souveniers from the nearby island of Bali Ha'i. Bill Muehlberger portrayed Luther Billis who also deals in souveniers with one catch, all of his are manufactured. Joseph Cable, played by senior Eric Dove, is a Marine who comes to the island in search of Emile. He needs Emile's help to carry out a dangerous secret mission. While Joe is on the island of Bali Ha'i he falls in love with Liat, who is Bloody Mary's daughter, played by freshman Jill Jenkins. But Joe is killed while on the mission with Emile. Still, the musical ends happily when Nellie finally de- cides that she really loves Emile and is there waiting for him with his children when he returns from the mission. 4 CHOIR MEMBERS: Reta Robinette, Melody Bjorgaard, Donna DeMaranville, Janie Rose, Chris Leach, Jean Shell, Mary Lou Bright Debbie Davidson, Connie Kricwitz, Denise Bradshaw, Lois Box, Cristy Harris, Jill Jenkins, Megan Richesin, Kelly Pickett, Leanne Smith, Karrie Kilburn, Lisa Camren, Sandy Peterson, Kelly Allen, Kim Williams, Dawn Stiltner.
