Mr. Fa Business Shorthand is like hieroglyphics: not only in un-understandability but in it is a key to a pattern of riches. Looking at the slams and curves, I realize that I can walk out of this building into an office. It is a part of the total school environment, and yet it is separate. It is a BOCES Center as a part of the tri-country BOCES. BCOES stands for Board of Cooperative Educational Services and the tri-counties are Schenectady, Albany and Schoharie. The whole state is divided into BOCES districts by counties or parts of the counties in densely populated New York Areas. The Schenectady School District has always had Vocational Education, and therefore, has its own director. I am the vocational coordinator for the Linton Center. At present we have about 600 boys and girls including about 100 students from outside districts who are here on a half-time basis. We have a large pre-trade program for both boys and girls which includes different areas that are exploratory in nature and lead to future participation in advanced and specialized vocational trade areas. Our programs include printing, machine trades, auto mechanics, welding, drafting, electrical electronics, building construction, cosmetology, practical nursing, fashion trades and distributive education. The students in these programs are of varied backgrounds and abilities, and our prgrams are each multi-tracked so that within each program students may obtain skills at different levels. For example, we may educate and train toolmakers, machinists and machine operators in the same program. 107
