1948 1949 Basketball Season The Prrates opened the season by w1n nmg easrly over Lagro 57 33 They led all the way burldrng up a twelve po1nt lead by the end of the frrst per1od Faltenng rn the last quarter the Prrates lost to Chester 38 to 38 rn a game played at the Wabash Hrgh School gymnasrum Lrnlawn turned rn the1r second wm by rollrng over Chrppewa by a 8l to 35 score Rex Nrelsen playmg hrs frrst game after a weeks s1ckness led the vrctors w1th 19 polnts Lrnlawn kept thelr w1nn1ng ways by defeatrng Lrncolnvrlle 59 to 22 They out scored the Goldbugs 3l to 8 rn the f1rst half The Prrates won the1r th1rd strarght game and therr fourth m frve games by beatmg Laketon 40 32 Thrs game proved to be qurte a battle and Lmlawn led by only 3 pornts at the end of the th1rd perrod They extended therr wrnnlng streak b trrumphmg over favored Roann 47 to 37 at Roann The Plrates played one of therr best games of the season and held the lead all the way Lrnlawn lost the1r second game of the season to a tough Swayzee crew by a 38 to 34 score Llnlawn played good ball grv mg Swayzee a good frght The prrates won easlly over therr Alumnr by a 58 3l score The game was clean and only 7 fouls were called aga1nst the wrn ners Lrnlawn squeezed out a wm over Urbana 34 33 on 2 free throws by Nlelsen rn the closrng seconds Thrs game was a real thrrller and both teams played the1r hearts ou Lrnlawn won the Four Way Tourney at Converse by defeatmg Sharpsvrlle 44 32 IH the afternoon and then trrumphmg over Converse at mght 5149 1n an overtrme Nrelsen was the b1g gun rn the Converse game hrttmg from every angle and rackrng up 34 polnts A very nrce trophy was presented to the Prrates Lrnlawn contmued to wrn by puttmg 543 down Somerset 55 to 4l the P1rates record showed 12 wms and 2 losses as they stretched therr wrnnmg streak to 6 stralght by defeatmg Lagro 1n the County Tourney 52 to 39 L1nlawn had con srderable trouble dur1ng the early portrons of th1s game Lrnlawn farled to advance rn the Tourney cs they were beaten by Roann 40 32 1n the erm Frnal round The Prrates had trouble l1tt1ng the basket The Prrates got back on the wrnnmg led ger agam by trounc1ng Laketon 47 to 3l They pulled away rn the second quarter after a close lrrst per1od Lrnlawn was checked by the Lafontarne county champs 45 42 at the Cossack s goalry Thrs game was hard fought all the way and a Pxrate rally rn the last quarter almost saw them through to vrctory Lrnlawn trred from the Lafontame russle Q farled to grve North Manchester Central much of a frght as the Tro1ans won easrly 39 24 The Prrates regalned therr pohsh and overwhelmed Lagro 54 4l The team play was excellent as each player contnbuted hrs share to make the game a success Lrnlawn lost a thrrller drller to Urbana by one small po1nt 40 39 1n a game played at the Speedkrngs gym The P1rates led all the way but an Urbana rally got them flat footed 1n the last quarter Lmlawn f1n1shed thelr regular play1ng season by r1pp1ng through Chlppewa 53 to 39 at the Wabash H S gym The Prrates started out well and never faltered ln the Sectlonal Tourney Lrnlawn lost to Lafontarne 32 27 Both teams seemed very cold untrl the last quarter when the Cos sacks Young tossed rn 12 pornts to sew up the game Lmlawns fmal record for the season rn cludmg all tournament games showed l4 wms agalnst 7 losses Thls IS undoubtedly one of the best records ever comprled by a Lmlawn Prrate crew Y .'
