I Trall of the 49ers Most crystal balls foretell the future but the one we looked 1nto the other day show ed us a b1t of the past hfe of the l949 Sen rors Lookrng mto thls rather backward crystal ball here IS what we saw All over the country 1n September l937 many l1ttle boys and g1rls who were des tmed to become 49ers were beglnnrng a gold rush for knowledge Of th1s vast group ten of us began at L1nlawn Grade School where we were to cont1nue and to become members of the L1nlawn l-hgh School Class of 1949 We consrsted of Isaac B1nkerd Constance Clark Larry Curless Donald Denney Ralph Dyson Marllyn Garrlson Donald l-larmsh IoAnn Kroft Earl Raver and Robert Van Camp Each day at grade school was a new adventure for us We learned many th1ngs both from books and from experlence Blll Sp1tler from Frankfort Jolned our group 1n the thrrd grade and Rex Nrelsen from Wa bash I-larrtet Peebles from Marron and Delores Roser from Texas came to us rn grade f1ve Ftnally the great day arr1ved We were at last el1g1ble to go to the BIG Hlgh School for we were seventh graders loan Burwell lune Knable and Ioan Mowrer entered from Wabash and loan Potterf entered from LaFonta1ne Mr Wllllarns was our teacher and he d1d a wonderful 1ob 1n helprng to get us started off on the r1ght foot fn he e1ghth grade Fred Aukerman from Wabash and Bob W1nters from Som rset became members of the class One of t e thr1lls was havfng permanent seats 1n the hxgh school assembly At long last we found ourselves Freshmen green but h1gh school students just the same We had a good Freshman basket ball team Among the memorxes of our Fresh man year was a rrp roarmg party at Wh1te s lnstltute Soon we became sophlstrcated Sophomores Many of our boys were on the second team and Rex made the f1rst team We had an excellent party thrs year Larry took us on a hayrlde and then to nts house for games and refreshments When we showed up for school for our lumor year we found a new pr1nc1pal Mr Shanahan wa1t1ng for us lt took us no tune to become hard worktng lumors prepanng the money for our lun1or Senlor expenses We really got 1nto blg bus1ness when we started sellrng magazlne subscr1pt1ons Drv1d1ng 1nto two teams we took IH over one thousand dollars' makmg a generous proht Larry was the captaln of the w1nn1ng team and the 1nd1v1dual leader as well We had a turkey supper at the school rn celebratlon of our success Frve of our boys made the f1rst team 1n basketball two Larry and Rex playmg regularly Durrng th1s lun1or year we had a ducky swunmmg party at the YMCA rn l-luntmgton tak1ng 1n a show afterwards Early 1n the year we got our sparkhng new class rlngs Our class pres ented Baby Srtter for the trad1t1onal Iunlor play It was well recemved ln the spr1ng our class gave a banquet rn honor of the 48 Sentors At thls pornt our crystal ball glows x 1th the beauhful formals and new su1ts whrch the young ladles and young gentle men respectrvely were weartng AND NOW lets throw the crystal ball away and come from the past to the pres ent' WE HAVE BECOME THE 49 SENIORS' Pag Fo teen ' 4 . - 1 . . t I - . .
