We were rather uncertain as to whedmm we would pass on to the third grade since one of theres quirements was a 5-minute subtraction-addition test. 1956 found us in the third grade. Miss Emmalou f Shambaugh was the teacher. It was her first year out of f College and we had a good time trying out a new teacher. I In 1937 we entered the fourth grade. Everyone was ' glad to be promoted upstairs for his fourth grade rin-. school. Helen Kaufman became a member of our class that , year. Miss Irma Small was the teacher. In 1945 we became seniors. The senior year is one that you wait on for eleven years, and then it is over before you know it. This is the year that most of us realize for the first time, how valuable TIME reallyis. Every student has said sometime in his school life that he would be glad when it was all over. How true that is in the early stages of the game. But when the month of April comes and we know that in a few weeks we will be gone from Linlawn as students forever, we change mn' minds 0 Commencement brings down the curtain on the first act. Our first party was on October 20, at Louise Ogan's house. We had our class party on December 12 ----- a m.eigh ride from Rich Valley to Linlawn. Upon arriving at school v we had hot dogs and hot chocolate ----then back to Rich Valley and home. Next on our special events list was the receiving of the class rings and necklaces we ordered last year. They are pretty, aren't they? On October 12 we started the concession stand. Two members of the class, Jerry Stouffer and Frances Custen were elected to be in charge of it. we hope that next years juniors have as much luck as we have had with it. The class was represented on the baseball team by Traverse Shanafelt, Donald Waymire, Lawrence Denney and Bob Ward. The junior class also had representatives on the NAU and HBH basketball teams. Traverse Shanafelt, Don- ald Waymire, Jerry Stouffer and Bob Ward were on thenBn team and Ronald Reed, Lawrence Denney and Charles Homer were on the NAU team. Charles dropped out right after the county tourney. During the last of the year Jerry and Traverse were moved up to first team places. This does not include the grade school twirlers or the four high school twirlers who worked with them---Emmalou Stitz, Evelyn Miller, Betty Garrison, and Frances Custer. Our annual winter concert was held December 25. We played three popular pieces, God Bless America , When the Lights Go On Againn, and NChiapanacasn and several light classicals. The program ended with the audience singing Christmas carols. Last spring, the band entered the State Band Con- test at Fort Wayne, and won first prize in its division. we are planning to enter again this year and hope txzdo as well. Due to the fact that most people graduate soonercr later, the band will lose four of its best regular mem- bers this year--Donna Rife, Gene Custer, Emmalou Wilson, and Jack Thompson. Three twirlers will also graduate-- Emmalou Stitz, Evdyn Miller, and Betty Garrison. We are sure to miss these members as they have been quite active in the band for several years. CHORUS If you heard a loud noise at the beginning of the year, it was the chorus starting off with a bang. The following list will give you a brief idea of who does the warbling: First Sopranos Ruth Pollitt Emmalou Wilson Second So ranos Sarah Ellgotf Valette Eppley Wilma Jean Tyner Bass Robert Penn James Van Camp John Winters Altos Frances Custer Mary K. Roser Maxine Vandegrift Barbara Whitehead Doris Yoder Tenors Gene Custer Richard Iambert Gene Pottenger Donald Raver Jack Thompson 5.7 in The girls of the chorus sang for the October PT.A. meeting. They sang, nBeautiful Garden of Prayern and nDown the River of Golden Dreams.n On the Christmas program the chorus with Mr.Iawson as soloist sang uGes1 Bambino.H Other selections that were sung were: nBirthday of A KingY'White Christmasn, and nln Excelsis Deo.n The Big Dinner, Baccalaureate, and Com encement were the occasions for which we sang the new numbers. Several new pieces have been added to our collect- ion. We have three Fred Waring arrangements: nErie Canalu, NHoly, Holy, Holyn, and HThis Is My CountryPOur other new numbers are: 'On The Road To Mandalayn, mln My Gardena, and nThe Blind P1oughman.n SPEECH CLASS There are eleven seniors in the speech class under the direction of Miss Baumgartner. We are in thisciass to learn to talk successfully. We have studied special- ized subjects, such as drematics, extempore speaking, debating and interpretative reading. At the end of the year we all hope to be able to speak before an audience without making mistakes and also to be perfectlyat ease ---not scared to death as we were the first few weekscf school. The senior play will offer us an opportunity to see if we have improved. The speech class presented a play ca1led1he'Chrisb mas Angela for the benefit of the high school. We also gave it at the Alumni Banquet. The characters were as follows: -1 Mrs.-Reynolds ------ - ---Emmalou-Wilsons 1 Angela Reyno1ds---- ---- +4--fEmmalou Stitz A T Jeff Reynolds ------- ---7--4Jack Thompson' Q Alice GFHY - -' P e . Since she had been quite small she had played the part because of her nyellow hair and blue eyes.n Several people offered to take the part.Thismas quite strange as before no one would take the part for anything. Angela finally decided to take the part her- self. Upon reading the paper she discovered that the pageant was to be filmed--the reason for all of theldnd offers. The boys are studying about dairy cattle and pasture management this year. They have had consider- able training in livestock judging, also. They have been doing a lot towards figuring cost of rations, bal- ancing rations and how to keep good records. This group of boys is an exceptionally good one. 4-H ACHIEVEMENTS Last summer Linlawn had a baseball team made up of 4-H boys. we won five games out of ten. We had several close games and enjoyed ourselves a great deal. An initiation ceremony was held during the summer for all 4-H members. Pond NPulling The Curtainn tells what happened when Leffie Jewell Hunderstine decided to produce!nr'own play -- her own opus, so to speak --a delicate English drama. Act One shows us at the first reading and castingg Act Two, the dress rehearsal--six months laterg andAct Thm the final performance. But, by the time the first two acts were finished the audience was so exhausted from laughing over Leffiefs troubles at rehearsals it wasdii- ficult for them to believe the play was ever produced. The plot began when Carrie Cadwaller, who played HThe Duchess of Wells,H had her pocketbook stolen and Herman Sprechen, who acts Lord Vmeelern with a German accent, accuses Leffie's henpecked husband of stealing it. Much of the novelty of the play lies in the fact that muchcf the action occurred in the aisles and amidst thex aud- ience. . CHRISTMAS RARTY After the grind of semester exams the junior and senior nigh students gathered in the gym to hear Rev. Ware Wimberly, see the play Angel Child given by the speech class, and sing Christmas carols. A few days before this, all of the students had drawn numbers--those who drew odd numbers bought a pres ent for a boy and those who drew even numbers bought a present for a girl. At 10:50 a.m. Mrs. Santa Claus and her helpers handed out presents to the group. Everyone watched with eager eyes as one-of the helpers carried a large present to Mrs. Stoddard---it was a box which conf tained a small bottle of Jergens lotion wrapped in sev- eral layers of paper. ' ' At last all of the presents were given out and the bus drivers were waiting for us. As we went out of the assembly door Miss Baumgartner, Mr. Sparks, and Mr. Bech- told handed everyone either a cup of ice cream or anlce cream bar to start the Christmas vacation right. y 4- r l scsool. We added only seven new books to the high school library the first semester. We have discontinued some of the less important magazines. Of all the books, the three most popular are-- 'The Robe , How Green Was My Valleyu, and 'All This And Heaven, Too.W' Two of these were made into movies. The three most popularnagazines are--Readers' Digest, The Saturday Evening Post, and REP ular Mechanics. The junior high librarians are Jo Ann Kr-oft Cedghth grade! and Janet Jo Waymire Cseventh gradeb. They have added five books to their library. We now have approximately 1500 books in mnrhbn 'y and hope to have more by the end of the year. Everyone has helped us very much in taking care of the books, by paying fines promptly and by obeying the rules. The librarians have enjoyed the past year and are looking forward to next year. CARNTVAI. The juniors and seniors sponsored a carnival in order to make money for their junior and senior trip. Entertainment during the evening consisted of acake walk, womanlessstyle show, bowling, movie, basketballan baseball throws, a dart game, and a popularity contest. Candidates for the popularity contest were chosen from each class a few days before the carnival. They were as follows: Freshman Betty Barlow and Gary Fordyce Sophomore Jean Erlewein and Grayston Campbell Junior Sarah Elliott and Lawrence Denney Senior Betty Garrison and Tom Waymire Tom Waymire and Betty Garrison were elected King and Queen, while Sarah Elliott and Lawrence Denney came in second.
