February 6, l872 - January 23, 1945 President Linfield College - - l906-l93l President Emeritus ---- 1931-1945 He 'needs no monument, no marble shaft, Whose life is spent for truth in noble cause- Let massive mausoleum mark the pause Of greatness gained by cold and greedy grasp, But he whose vision shapes to worthy deeds Builds through the years his lasting cenotaph Of stones that perish not and mark a path That others follow, glad the way it leads. This- man-shut in with work, as friend with friend- Ears dulled to calls of trumpets made of clay, Brought all, his all, in love for human kind, To God and church and school, for soul and mind. He led! as moves the deep to planets' sway, Yet leads, in vital tides that shall not end. -Ralph E. Storey, Class of 1895 ... 2 ... DEDICATION As the shadows fall in ever-changing patterns on the face of the sun-dial, so does the influence of each of us at Linfield affect the destiny of our college. Though our moment here is but a fleeting one, all tomorrow will be different because of it. Ever are We striving for the dawn of a better day. So to those who have come and to the many who are yet to pass through these portals, we dedicate the 1945 OAK LEAVES. The seniors treated themselves to dinner and a theatre date as the first get- together of the year, and continued activity with the Class Play, George Washington Slept Here, the Senior Sneak Day, Senior-Faculty party, Senior Skate, and Senior Chapel. Commencement on June 3 marked the culmination of undergraduate study with the conferring of degrees and the Hhooding ceremony introduced as the brain-child of the Class of '45. Officers of the year have been: Frank lVlcCray, President: Maynard LeCocq, Vice President: Helen Hicks, Secretary: and Virginia Mosely, Class Repre- sentative. Johnson Jones Dunwiddie FRESHMAN CLASS Outstanding in his leadership, Dale Johnson with Roberta Jordahl, vice presi- dent: Joyce Jones, secretary: and Margaret Dunwiddie, class representative carried out an active and successful year. Class Mamma and Pappa, Rosa Bishop and Roy Cyr respectively, helped to set the class off on the right foot which eminated with an all frosh talent night. Through the year, the class of the '48 entertained the various classes and the faculty besides having their own Backwards party in the school gym. The Traditional Homecoming bonfire was once more seen in all its glory thanks to the ambitions of the class Qand the relenting of the war departmentj. Although defeated in the annual tug-o-war, the class showed a typical Linfield spirit which never once died through the year. Highlighting the year, on April 6th, the Fresh- man Class took over the student body offices and ruled the campus for the day. The 'AAttainment Day was entrusted to John Giltner, president: Tuffy Swearingen, vice president: Ella Mae Lathrop, secretary: and Margaret Marks, editor of the, The Observatory. - .Jehu-A Mr. Beard Advisor 1 27 1 l . ,,,, K N W 5 5 - - ' Q 1, .5 ,: . These spots are being reserved for those who once occupied them, by those who remember . . . One that smells like the incense of Arabian Nights and is for the Deltasg one that looks like peroxided crew cuts above fellowship pants and is for the Phi Eps: one that lumbers across the turf carrying the pigskin and is for the IOM's: one that has a flare for radical genius and is for the Tau Delts: and one that goes all out for the 'keerect' things, with tendencies toward good looks and intellectualism and is for the Alpha Gams. All five can be dimly discerned solving the vital problems of life through a haze as of the smoke in Pop's. Reminiscence brings from the past pictures of initiative and exurberance, of an out-of-this-world language, of screwball politics, or chapel skits that exploded. Various accoutrements seem to crowd themselves into the scene, and up chugs the Purple Passion- ate Buggy, oozing with masculine physiques: and then there were the water bags, making Pioneer a veritable menace to life and coiffeur. A midnight hike by the river, the corsage boxes dangling from Failing windows, 'hands off' tables at the Commons, a moonlight serenade, twilight softball, a snow fight, 'sponse' to knock off demerits, the Petty galleries, intra-mural battle off and on the field . . , These countless little things and an infinitely greater thing called spirit merge into the unity that is Linfield. .-33- IW a- Ja- Cha Cyr XVi1son Bauman .f 'Z Pease, S W i'h'25. rt YV01'th Buunell Edwards Harris Koesling Ledgerwood Long Swearin gen Millm' f :1 Q 1. 5 I is K 1 f f 2 f X ' 52 N Z N X7 f X 4 Q Q N X X , W Q Z fi , A ii : 1:5 A Lev? : ' f' ' ,aiifffr L f 11, 1 X G K f f ,.-f , f ' K 355 f Q 'jT4+7 Q? Hold- ing down a full schedule of appearances, the choir under the direction and inspiration of Professor Raymond D. Rhea started its full year with an enlarged version of the traditional Christmas Carols Concert, singing in Chapel, at Mac High School, and the Baptist Church here. The Portland concerts included trips to various high schools, Barnes Hospital, several churches, over the radio station KALE, with the grand finale at White Temple. In the spring a varied program of modern, secular, sacredyiand Negro spirituals was presented also in McMinnville and Portland. The cooperation of the individual members of the choir and the perfection- bound direction of Prof. Rhea and his student director, John Giltner, made this an outstanding year in the bright annals of the Linfield A Cappella Choir.
