Her duties included the main- tenance of invoices and the dealing of financial matters. Mrs. Elva Be- quette, right, our District Secretary and Secretary of the Board of Trus- tees, for seven years has fulfilled her duties accurately and faithfully. She was in charge of all Mr. CastIe's correspondence and the district's financial records. She also handled the orders and bills con- cerning all the schools. She was K always ready to assist Mr, Castle in any circumstance. NX gb as. Our chief administrator and superintendent was Mr, Clayton A. Castle. Being the executive officer of the Board and the Administrative head of the district, he spent many hours fulfilling his duties. He was responsible for the general efficiency of the school system, for the develop- ment of the teaching staff and for the growth and welfare of the pupils, He took charge of preparing the school budget so we had the necessary supplies for functioning properly. We appreciate all Mr. Castle has done for us. Heading the Board of Trustees was Mr. .lay Shropshire, far right. The clerk was Mrs. Lorraine Paul, and the other members were Mr. Burke Thompson, Mr. Richard Henderson and Mr. George Harold Waddell. These trustees had many duties and responsibilities which needed to be discussed and dealt with properly. Some of their responsibilities were to intepret the educational needs of the community, develop policies in accordance with the law, and keep the people intelligently informed of the purpose, value, conditions, and needs of public education within the community. These were but o few of their duties which needed to be performed throughout the year, and we know they did it willingly and properly. l A Q ,, l W T . 9 lr' ' . we PRINCIPAUS OFFICE Our principal, Mr. Thomas Cahraman, came to our district in April of last year and has kept this school in the best of order. Being a former Director of Activities he has helped and has given the school many new ideas to keep it hep. Aside from the social activities he was the administrative head of all the school functions. He was anxious to have our students excel scholastically and athleticolly. When disputes and problems arose, he was always ready to help in the best way possible. Miss Graves' many assistants learned throughout the year to perform the various duties and responsibilities of a secretary. The assistants of this year were Oleta Cantrell, Martha Mason, Ernestine Gomez, Teresia Gomel, Brenda Longpre, Linda Trafton, Sharon Ferguson, Janice Eastin, Karen Ferguson, Joyce Ross, Evelyn Krider and Marv Centeno. These girls throughout the day did many jobs which helped Miss Graves very much. Oleta Cantrell was in charge of the Daily Bulletin, and Evelyn Krider was in charge of the Absentee Bulletin. The other iobs were filing, typing, answering the telephone and running errands. The girls were very willing to help Miss Graves and were grateful for the advice she gave them on office procedures. Filing records, typing reports, help- ing office assistants, beating pupils: these were all a part of the strenu- ous iob Miss Graves had to do as secretary of Lindsay High School. We were very happy and grateful Miss Graves was with us. 45' . ,r. 5 We SCHOOLS' A 15:91 ' 'i 2 1 ' I 9l0 ll 35 If I7 21 gill N-Q ll :iii-lilii GN Q sf., L2 ,ff MARION BARNES English and Library Syracuse University, B. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was the culmina- tion of all the school's social activities. Weeks of worry and work were justified by the beauty and serenity of the event. Every Junior Class that sponsors the Banquet and Prom thinks its is the best. l don't know if this year's was the best, but it certainly ranks among the top forty. There are three things that go into a Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom: money, money, and more money. Without it we wouldn't have much of cz banquet, hot dogs and milk would probably be the menu, and Cousin Herb's Trading Post Gang the dance band. The Juniors sponsor dances, cake sales and the iunior play in order to get enough money for the Banquet and Prom. So, all the limit- less energy and imagination possessed by the Sophomores gushes forth in one mighty creative burst. The work for the Sophomore Amateur Hour falls heavily on the shoulders of the class council. Presi- dent Nick Castle, Vice-President Bill Losh, Secretary Susan Williams, Treasurer Bob Holmes, and advisors, Mrs. Luna, Mr. Bridges, Mr. Skadan, and Mr. Bet- tisworth. Although the class council has a great deal of work, it is justified, for these elite personages will be the ones who make the first choice ot the class rings, a milestone in any student's life. Money is the salvation of any class. The Sophomores sold cakes and sponsored dances in order to lighten their finan- cial burdens. FIRST ROW: F. Campbell, L. Kaku, K. Hall, L. Bain, S. As we come to the close of another school year, we have taken another step toward our goals in life. In this complicated age in which we live, strug- gling to keep our national standing, each one of us may be thankful for the opportunity to enter into school life and government lust as we will in later life. For Lindsay High School this has been a highly successful year. The Student Council has worked very hard to make this year successful and to com- plete the many tasks laid before it. Our school has been represented at the Governor's Traffic Safety Conference, C. A. S. C. meetings, league council meetings, and many other functions of importance. Our Student Council has also made possible many social functions for the enioyment of all. A special thanks from all the members goes to our advisor and principal, Mr. Cahraman, who has helped in so many ways. What we receive in one year of school training can hardly be replaced, and l'm sure that all of us will be better able to serve our country because of Student Body President such training. COMET Mr. Victor Durbin Comet Advisor Becky Williams, Assistant Editor and Jacquelyn Paul, Editor, As another year rolls by another Comet rolls off the press. Our staff has worked hard to bring you a Comet you will enioy. We hope you do iust that. Special thanks must be given to many persons who made it possible to have this annual. Our photographer, Jim Lusk, has rendered his time and services to us along with the Lindsay Gazette, which has co-operated a great deal with our photography staff here at school. Our faculty and principal have also given us their co-operation when picture taking and deadlines arrive. Without all the help of these wonderful people, this Comet would not have been published. In closing, I would like to say that as you look through this annual, now and in the years to come, l hope you will remember many pleasant, past experiences. 9, tfjggziif 111- 7 I V, , A H Technicians and Typists. With a song, a lyric, and a beauteous note, the music of the chorus was heard drifting out of the band room every day. Only on special occasions did the chorus perform for the public's enioyment. Such was the annual Band and Chorus Show when the chorus sang right along with the band. Mr. Wayne Kemper was the chorus director and took the singing group through- out the year on a repertoire of song. This included almost all types of songs from folk to popular. High notes and low notes were easily reached by the wide range of voices. Music, maestro, and that is lust what the chorus gave our school this year and well received were the songs and other musical pieces. FIRST ROW: C. Jones, K. Miller, M. Centeno, S. Pitts, P. Scholarship for Service is the traditional motto of our Lindsay High School Scholarship Society. It fits in perfectly because the first act of the club is to do a service for the school. This year and every year they clean the proudly won trophies. Like any club they have an election of officers. The writ- ten procedure is to elect a new staff of officers each semes- ter. The first semester officers were Jay Webb as president, Susan Webb as vice-president, and Nancy Barker as secre- tary-treasurer. On October 29, l958 the society spent the day in Porterville attending the Annual District Conference. In the spring they attended another conference in Delano. These conferences gave them the opportunity to learn what the 5 other clubs were doing for activities. Also in May they had an educational day which was spent in Fresno. Another honor which is earned throughout the high school term of four years is Life Membership. Each senior, who makes C. S. F. four semesters out of the last six, one being in his senior year, will receive a special gold seal of merit on his diploma. We are proud to say that this year the honor was bestowed on more students than in any other year. FIRST ROW: B. Shimasaki, L. Perauo, S. Williams, J. Natoli, J. Whitfield, D. Huddleston, S. Spanish words and phrases, in song and prose, echoed through the Spanish club todo el ano or in other words, English, of course, all year. Sonny Flores was the top seior in Spanish Club, acting as president of the Spanish council. Bob Holmes was the vice-president, Joyce Pepper was the secretary-treasurer, and Carol Keller, Kay lmoto, Mary Lander, and Brad Holmes were the representatives from the four Spanish classes. Mrs. Esther Ketelsen was the advisor for the group and didn't get a siesta all year! With a new advisor this year and a group of new girls, the Y-Teens of l958-59 really accomplished a lot and had a lot of fun doing it. Under the leadership of Miss Danforth, their ad- visor, and president Elise Waddell, the Y-Teens took part in many worthwhile proiects at each bi-monthly meeting. Charlotte Webb, Mary Lander, Jerri Bridges, and Claire Danielson polished the trophies and the whole group made tray favors for the local hospital patients. Fund raising drives were also on the agenda of good deeds. Highlighting the year was the annual Backward Ban- quet held in honor of the football players and presided over by the football queen and her attendants. This surplus is used to improve the school in some way. Drinking fountains, bus radios, and a trophy case have been some ofthe contribu- tions made by the Federation. This year the Boys' Federation is going to buy something very worthwhile, a hi-fi phonograph. The Girls' League of Lindsay High School is truly a flourish- ing organization. Through participation in services and through the rendering of their time to the community they have become an asset. The Girls' League this year has been inspired by a wonderful staff headed by Oleta Cantrell as President. The girls had very able advisors, Miss Allison Hostetter and Mrs. Mary Luna. This year the girls again adopted a child from the sanitarium in Springville. The little girl was two and a half years old, and her name was Peggy Johnson. The girls devoted much of their time for the entertainment of Peggy. To the delight of the League she showed much improvement over her condition at the first of the year. Each year our girls take on many time-consuming proiects. One of these was the sponsoring of the Valentine dance in February. Another project involved the selling of the football programs at the home games to raise money. Still another was taken on by the girls when they offered their services as waitresses for the Spanish Banquet which was sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary. Of course, this was the publish- ing of our weekly produced paper, the Echoing L. A staff of about twenty people worked on the paper. This staff put out a paper that informed us of the news happening, events coming, and, in general, wrote things they thought the students would enioy. ln each paper, we found an interesting fea- ture article expressing the views of the teenagers. Mr. McFadzen and Miss Fahrendorf were the teachers who supervised the publishing of the paper. Sue Brecken- ridge did a fine job as the editor of the Echoing L. Besides putting out the Echoing L the iournalism class had quite a bit of schoolwork to do. Among other things, they learned how to get news and stories, and how to interview people. The iournalism class had a hard iob and the students of Lindsay High School should really appreciate the good work they did. wig? For nine straight games they annihilated their opponents, bring- ing to Lindsay an undefeated team after a long drought. ln practice games the Cardinals left behind them a quartet of shattered football teams. Exeter, Dinuba, and Wasco were easy meat for the iuggernaut of Boone and Company, but the Raiders from Redwood went out only after a rugged fight which ended in a score of I3-7, the only close game all season. In Central Sierra League play, it was no con- test. Each game was won by a margin of 30 or more points. Lindsay 41 McFarland 6 The '58 Cardinals were built around a nucleus of small fast linemen and backs and around an impeccable defense which allowed only 33 points to slip through all season. The key to a successful football team is sometimes said to be the coaching, Coach J, R. Boone and Coach Bob Padilla can not be praised enough for their time and effort put into the molding of a championship team. Captain Bob Baird and Captain Gary Ham- mons along with Most Valuable Player Larry Pickering were very important to the success of this team. The sportsmanship and the character these players showed were glowing examples of how the game of football affects the personality of its participants. We can't criticize the Cardettes too much, however, because they were playing teams that cheated. The other teams didn't take their turns at scoring, they would score up to 6 times in a row without giving us our turn. What cheaters! We weren't exactly looking forward to the remainder of the season but something wonderful happened to our team. The some- thing, whatever it is, made them a little smarter and a lot tougher. The sixth game was a surprising 7 to 6 victory over McFarland. Game number 7 was with Woodlake and the little Redbirds won handily. Now people were beginning to smile at us on the street again. The eighth game was with Strathmore, very much a championship contender. Our boys pulled the game out of the fire in the last minute. A miracle had been performed! The Cardettes had not only won an impossible three games in a row, but had beaten the Spartans of Strathmorel The last game was a mere anti-climax to the preceding week's victory. But the beating of Avenal nailed down second place, a lofty position to be attained by a team which had lost four in a row. The Cardettes became a winning club partly through superior coaching, which was done by Coach Maicrowicz and Assistant Coach Durbin. A solid nucleus of the returning lettermen was led by Co-captain, Bob Shimasaki and Co-captain and Most-valuable player, Don Erwin. Our team ielled in mid season and provided many thrills for their loyal early evening football fans! There was a hubbub of general reioicing in our town for we had conquered the team generally conced- ed the championship. After losing our first league game, a heart- breaker to McFarland, by two points, we shifted into second gear and won our next two. After another defeat we swung into high and won the rest. Win or lose our boys' organized hustle was always evident. Guiding his team through a season of ups and downs, always with an air of sportsman- ship and good will, was Coach J. R. Boone. Sparked by the timely scoring of Bob Sal- cedo and Leonard Smith, the Cardettes hurled themselves through twelve league opponents, winning five and losing seven. The Central Sierra was definitely short on pushovers. Lettering this year were Robert Salcedo, Leonard Smith, Daryl Mason, Rick Stamper, Bob Holmes, Jim Berryhill, Rodger Hembree, Dave Lambert, Leonard Olmos, and Bob Cordua. Cox, B. Gisvold, L. Gibson, D. Puls, D. Brecken- ridge, T. Valenzuela. The littlest Cardinals had one of the finest defensive records in the league though short on height and experience. The fledglings went all out on hustle, and their tight zone and aggressive play proved effective. A few extra inches might have added those extra points but a coach cannot very well stretch out his players. Coach Victor Durbin usually started Bill Losh, Don Steele, Oris Roberts, Terry Moore and Benny Truiillo, who was elect- ed captain. Measure the season in terms of experi- ence gained and we believe no one can deny that real benefit was drived from this one. Look out in 1960! Coach Victor Durbin 73 Coach Steve Hanigan. Senior players are Charles Sheldon, Nancy Barker, Jacquie Paul and Jay Webb. l lf 6 Although tennis didn't reach its peak until spring, the entire team was seen practicing out on the courts throughout the year. Perfecting the backhand, forehand, and serve, plus learning strategy in maneuvering, were the prime obiectives of each player. By the time the inter-school competition began in the spring, Mr. Hanigan had done his usual great iob of coaching and sharpening his team's game. Each player tried to obtain his utmost in skill and win an honored position on the tennis ladder which hangs in the gym hall. Often the process of earning a regal place on the ladder was a series of hard won challenge matches. Several lettermen from last year returned to the team this year. Nancy Barker and Charles Sheldon were elected girI's and boy's captains as the result of a vote by the top ten girls and top ten boys. The team, as years in the past, played skillfully and sports- manlike out on the courts. They always were good competitors, playing against big schools. This may or may not be a good idea lfrom the girI's point of viewl, but this past season it seemed to have worked wonders with our boys, for they sober-mindedly skimmed their way over the aforementioned hurdles, pole vaults, etc., with the greatest of ease. ln a district renowned for turning out the greats of the track field lBob Mathias, Rafer Johnsonl we feel X X. Each day Coach Mike assigned laps and relays to toughen their muscles and lungs. The team, as a whole, looked pretty promising. The A Class was not as strong as usual but nevertheless they gave a good account of themselves. One of the strongest B Clubs that our school has had in some years splashed its way to many honors. Their good bal- ance and plenty of depth gave other aquatic organizations ulcers. A record number of girls turned out and looked like perhaps the best squad ever. Top performers in every event and strong relay teams made things tough for all opponents. This year was filled with a great many meets with the towns of the Sequoia League.
