The students blazed through the financial iungle with various cake sales, car washes, and etc. These were brought up and con- sidered by the members of the class council-President, Dwight Fitzgerald, Vice-President, Tootie Morillo, Secre- tary, Lynette Crump, and Treasurer, Sharon Butterbaugh. Representing the girls on the safari was Joanne Newman, and for boys, Gene House. Doing the Red Cross work this year were Doris Barker and Jerry Mclntosh. The iob of the Junior Class is to provide for the Senior Banquet and Prom at the end of the school year. So, the Junior Class Play was held on November 30, 1956, and it boosted the financial resources quite a bit, but still more money was needed. Therefore, a halt was called, and the tired travelers invited the neighboring tribesmen in for several profit-making dances, which also helped the situation immensely. During the journey, a few aborigines amidst this group of bwanas did a lovely job of attempting to re- finish the famous Senior Bench with red paint. So, after a long and tedious battle, the Juniors forfeited a part of the treasury for the repainting of said bench. All in all, we experienced a profitable and mem- orable safari of which the preceeding were only highlights. Y' 1 Y . L k ' 1 A 'JP ..- y 1 1 Wx .. On our caravan these people proved their worth. Thus the Sophomores sponsored and promoted the annual Sophomore Amateur Hour, put on a dance, and had a 3 cake sale. The class elected their otticers to lead them. The pres- ident was Larry Pickering, viceepresident, Tom Taylor, secretary, Diane Boyd, and social chairman, Carolyn Meling. This hilarious comedy, which played for years on Broadway, was ef- fectively done by the drama students, many of whom played more than one part. Stage settings were more elaborate and costumes more authentic than in years past, when the accent had been on simplicity. The costuming, make-up, and scenery lent an air or professionalism to the performance that set oft the actor's portrayals. Between nephew Teddy charging up the stairs under the impression it was San Juan Hill, and he Mr. Roosevelt, and everyone else hiding bodies in the window seat and trying vainly to bury them in the cellar, the audience laughed itself sick as things turned from funny to sidesplitting. From sports to fashions, there was always something in each edition to please every student. The staff continued its editorial campaign tor a new and better gym, but also attacked student thieving, the lack of assemblies, and hosts of other topics. Under the direction of Editor Pat Brenner, and the advisership ot Mr. Gossman, the paper was packed with timely news and interesting features. To stimulate interest, a student poll was taken to determine feelings about the changing ot the paper's name. Although the move was unsuccessful, it promoted a flurry ot letters to the editor and achieved its primary goal ot student interest in the publications. The Echoing L proved again and again that it is still the student's paper, and the student's record, Nothing of importance was ever omitted, nothing unsuitable was ever printed, but, thanks to a capable and industrious staff, the paper remains a lively work of good iournalism. Over the caravan route this year Mr. Smith, our naturalist, has taught the FFA boys many things that they will use when they have completed this safari. At the beginning of the year all of the Freshmen got the Green Hand treatment. This initiation took place after a bar- becue dinner. The Freshmen had their hands dipped into green paint, and all the upper classmen had lun. This year in order to raise money the boys sold rattle tickets on turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Two different judging teams went to Cal Poly for the iudging contests. On each team there were three members, one team con- sisted of upper classmen and the other one of lower classmen. The FFA Banquet was held on February 22. This was one of the high lights of the year. In May two delegates were sent to the State FFA Convention at Cal Poly to learn what is new in farming. They were the younger members on the foreign trip. Second division had the more adventurous explorers, following their assistant guide Sharon Butterbaugh. They were quite an active group. The most daring persons in the whole party were thc eleven third year students who, under the capable leadership of Bonny Cairns, had a very interesting iour- ney. Conferences were held along the tourney the last Friday of each month, at which entertainment was pro- vided tor the weary travelers, On May titth the whole safari group gathered tor a Banquet, at which all spoke The foreign language. Bi-monthly meetings of the organization have been enter- taining and educational. Service projects for this year were polish- ing trophies for Lindsay High, making tray favors for Hospital oatients, and helping with the heart drive. Some of the highlights of this trip were the annual back- fvard banquet honoring football players, with Carol Ann Kim- Jrough, football Queen, reigning over this festive occasion. Another traditional event which always is a huge success is he Y-Teen Carnival. Under the leadership of Nancy Brown and Mrs. Ketelsen, ldviser, the Y-Teens were proud of their expedition of 1956-57. No, its another Girls' League meeting full of interesting ideas, Worthwhile service protects, and heart warming companionship for all. Vvhether it be singing Christmas carols along vvintry streets, listening to advice from a boys' panel on the girl subject, or auc- tioning att classmates to raise money, the Girls' League stands out more as an organization for all the girls than it ever has in years past. At the beginning of the year many Leaguers attended the Convention in Bakersfield and returned home with more than enough ideas tor the ensuing year. The club changed its service project this year, thereby leaving more tunds tor girls' activities. The Sweetheart Ball was the biggest social event ot the year, and one dance that the whole school will long remember. T - 1 F t z C. C tl , . . .
