The Language Arts Department en- velops not only the study of English grammar and literature, but also reading and Spanish. This depart- ment is the largest at Lindley, and it employs nine teachers. The de- partment is drafting a syllabus to be used at all grade levels in future years. Monthly department meetings are a means of discussing problems and formulating new ideas . Emphasized in the area of grammar study are the fundamental rules of composition. The students are urged to be creative through their writingg in the upper level classes the assignments deal with abstrac- tions as well as tangibles. In the field of literature the stress is on reading and comprehending. Vocab- ulary is developed and critical analysis is introduced. Outside reading is encouraged. Some classes have joined book clubs and order as many as 200 books per month. Stu- dents are encouraged to attend local theaters in order to broaden their cultural backgrounds . One group of ninth grade students saw BAREFOOT IN THE PARK at the Municipal Theater in February. The Language Arts Department strives to enrich the student's cul- tural interests and his appreciation for his own language and literature. Miss Fields is ready to start work, but what about her class? Some students have important things in mind besides reading , ww . 23 Perhaps your conception of Miss Newton is that of a zany comedienne The description fits, but she is only an English teacher ready to instruct and laugh.

Mrs. Jarrell is the teacher of seventh grade English courses. She was born at Harpersville, Alabama, and she received her degree from Jacksonville State University. Her hobbies are reading and sewing. We anticipate her return next year. During her first year at Lindley, Miss Culver, a teacher of Remedial Reading, has brightened the lives of many students. She attended Murray State University where she also received her degree in Home Economics. I 1 E1 Tora , doesn't exactly resemble the cry of an English gram- mar and literature teacher, but in this case you've been deceived Miss Hall is also a Spanish teacher and sponsor of the Spanish Club. Her main hobby is traveling which she put to use last sum- mer when she toured Spain with a group of students. She has also taken a European tour and she enjoyed it thoroughly.
