The tale they tell is that of cram sessions, jam sessions, and examination blues, of moments filled with madness, gladness, and sadness. These moments are all vivid and individual. The moments of madness are in counter-balance with those of sincere dedication to the belief which is basic to most of us at Lindley, the belief that at Lindley, we grow in depth, beauty, mind, and soul. The moments of gladness, out of necessity of equilibrium, are in counter-balance with those of sadness, sadness which comes when we have realized the potential of ourselves and of our school and have failed to equal it. This is a story, nonetheless, that tells no less of hopes held fast, of dreams possessed, of yeamings pursued. Above all, it is a chronicle of a quest, of a ceaseless search for heighth and depth and wideness. From such stuff has been forged life at the Lindley we know and love. The editor and his staff join in a hope that this book faithfully portrays the spirit as it here is lived. 3 I, n,,,,, AW M irrorea' Moments Rqflect School LW 2g f . f i f The Good M omonts - M , X 45- -- 1 ---. -- - f? f -6 3- mx- iii 'fggh---L ,-f. ,Q-. 5 ---45-L-553132.-f--,-aymgfuf-f--ggkmlag W Ng.. . , - Q2 --- 5: -- -S x 'D' ,' fbxfui 1 X Yx 1-if 'i ' f-1446 F ix -LE. DEDICATION In honor of the many great things which he has done for Lindley from sports to science, in the last two years, we the members of the annual staff dedicate this year's annual to a most deserving individual. We feel that this man has gone above and beyond the call of duty in the interest of the school team, the student body, and the school itself. We feel that he has done as much or more than any other teacher in this school. He brought our football team to many victories by intensive training and hard work on his part as well as on the part of the team's, and he still found time to teach science and give of himself, unrescrvedly. To the students, he is well known and highly respected. His friendly manner makes him a popular man throughout the school. He is willing to help out in any problem, even if it means more work on his part. He devotes most of his time to the school and its purpose. He helps keep morale and schoolspirit high. He has sincere interest in the student. He has truly made great contributions to knowledge and health in his students. He inspires confidence in all his students, which makes him a respected teacher, advisor, and friend. He has a part in nearly all school activities. He inspires the football team on to victory, giving them confidence when the going gets rough. Therefore, in appreciation of his unobtrusive but sincere interest in the student, his ability as a teacher and a scholar, and his refreshing and lively personality, we the staff of the 1966-67 RAIDER dedicate this issue to Coach Homer Cuddy. Mrs. Tillet devotes much of her time and energy to guiding and instructing the eighth and ninth grades to a better education. Coming from grammar school to junior high creates many problems for Lindley's seventh grade students. Miss Anderson handles all of the tedious problems of these students. She is understanding and helpful to those students. LIBRARY The guidance department has been in full swing this year. It helped many new and confused students to find their classes and to get adjusted to the school. The guidance department, a very helpful department, tries to situate each student in his class according to his ability. The guidance department aids any student in any problem the student has. This departments gives guidance to the student in trying to find out what classes he wants to take while he is at Lindley or when he leaves to go on to high school. The counselors for Lindley are Mrs. Tillet and Miss An- derson. Mrs. Tillet is the ninth grade and eighth grade counselor. She has been the counselor to Lindley Junior High for two years. Miss Anderson is the seventh grade counselor. She teaches English and helps Mrs. Tillet anytime she is needed. We thank these ladies very much for their expert assistance and guidance. This has been one of the most important departments of the school and its activities for two years. The library is one of the main areas in the student's and teacher's school day. The library offers good books to read for enjoyment and books for reference to help the students in certain fields for reports. The library also has paper-back issues of newspapers and magazines. The library offers a quiet place to study for assignments. Although the library does not have a large number of books, the school is trying to stock it as soon as possible. Mrs. l-Iolifield, the school's librarian and Mrs. Jarrel, her assistant, try to help the student in any way they can. lt is very difficult to keep the library in shape. Mrs. Holifield came to Lindley Junior High this year but Mrs. Jarrell has taught here since the school came into operation two years ago. Mrs. Holifield was the librarian at Pebblebrook before she came to Lindley. Both of these ladies are very capable in this library area. We thank these ladies greatly for the time and effort they put forth for the library. ARTS ep CRAFTS At Lindley many students enjoy taking Arts and Crafts under Mrs. Massey, a new teacher this year. A The Arts and Crafts department is always doing different ideas in class such as melting wax to make drawings and tooth pick sculpture which provides a pleasant diversion from board work and note classes. , wt, -we N I The Arts and Crafts department is also in charge of the dec- oration in the lunchroom which is always something inter- esting that makes eating more fun. At Christmas time the Arts and Crafts room was truly the most unusually decorated of all the rooms with its designs on the windows and cleverly decorated tree. BUSI E SDEPARTMENT General Business helps student to acquire the much needed knowl- edge of the overly complicated business world. Students in general business are learning what will be required of them in the near future. In general business a person learns how to make out checks, calculate interest on loans, learn the basis funda- mentals business. Students learn how to be neat, efficent and speedy in their work under the experienced instruction of Mrs. Todd. In this advancing world a common person has to have an intential amount of business knowledge to succeed in our fast- moving, complicated and confusing world. - A .,,.. as .c . f A . is During Art Class the students under the direction of Miss Massey learn how to make and decorate many original projects, making Art Class an interesting and profitable ex- perience. s . , at ' 4 gs.. - L , ,,, . xf' Q' is-qrffkf .' gg A xml bww Mrs. Todd is the typing instruc- tor and General Business director of our school. Miss Diane Tallant, head of the Home Economics department at Lindley, graduated from West Georgia Collegel She teaches both cooking and sewing. This is her second year of teaching Home Ec. Miss McCormick teaches world geography and home economics. Her major is home economics. She has a Southern accent, and this has been her first year at Lindley. She is a fine teacher and we are happy to have her in our school. 20 OMICS The Home Economics department at Lindley Junior High is designed to build better homemakers of America. The departments that are taught are Food and Nu- trition, Clothing and Textiles, Personal Family and Social Relations, Housing, Home Improvement and Home Furnishings, Personal Development, Good Grooming and Child Care. In the Foods and Nutrition department planning menus and preparing foods is the main idea that is taught. In the Clothing and Textiles department a study of the basic wardrobe, fabrics and clothes teenagers should purchase is the main activities in this depart- ment. Making yourself more attractive and acceptable is taught under Personal Relationships and getting along with yourself and others is taught under Social and Family Relationships. Under the Housing Department many items are taught. Some of them are sharing responsibilities in the care of the home, growing up economically, styles of homes, furniture, and improving the home. Finally the students study childcare. They study the pre-school children, their emotions, maturities, activities and experiences. They learn how to be an efficient baby-sitter. The teachers in the Home Economics department are Mill Tallant and Miss McCormick. In addition to the hours and hours of time and energy exerted by all of the Home Economics students, there is time for social pleasures . . . good meals! I D STRIAL ARTS Mr. Campbell teaches Industrial Arts and is highly respected by his students. In his room, it's not all work and no play, but it is not all play and no work, either. The Industrial Arts Department consists of woodwork- ing, metal shop, and mechanical drawing. The ninth grade is in woodworking, and besides learning to use hand tools, they are learning to use machines safely. They have also learned to refinish furniture and have turned out some beautiful examples of their handiwork. The eighth grade has learned to mold and form metal into objects very skillfully during metal shop. The seventh grade, taking me- chanical drawing, is learning how to use a rule and how to lay out blueprints. This department, under the able leadership of Mr. Campbell and Mr. Dye, teaches the student to use their hands and tools to make beautiful projects and to teach them skills that can be used in everyday life. The use of machines is under the direction of safety rules which are followed by the students. Mr. Dye, Industrial Arts Teacher, has a main goal of teaching the pupils to work individually to obtain his own objective. I-Ie has been very successful in doing this in this area. 1 l s l 1 5 - ,C M, S I ic' 5 s, mm 'illl ' .Q fo, cg,- ,A yi Ll s. , , , I its ..f- ' This class is learn- ing how to work with machinery and how to work together in the right manner. Mr. B. is one of our coLmty's busiest people, and is an expert at his job. Miss Estes teaches Grammar and Literature. She is the Counselor of the Seventh Grade Y-Teens. This 1 er first year at Lindley. Mrs. Campbell, who has given two years of her knowledge at Lindley, is preparing for her next Literature class, which she seems to enjoy. The Language Arts Department en- velops not only the study of English grammar and literature, but also reading and Spanish. This depart- ment is the largest at Lindley, and it employs nine teachers. The de- partment is drafting a syllabus to be used at all grade levels in future years. Monthly department meetings are a means of discussing problems and formulating new ideas . Emphasized in the area of grammar study are the fundamental rules of composition. The students are urged to be creative through their writingg in the upper level classes the assignments deal with abstrac- tions as well as tangibles. In the field of literature the stress is on reading and comprehending. Vocab- ulary is developed and critical analysis is introduced. Outside reading is encouraged. Some classes have joined book clubs and order as many as 200 books per month. Stu- dents are encouraged to attend local theaters in order to broaden their cultural backgrounds . One group of ninth grade students saw BAREFOOT IN THE PARK at the Municipal Theater in February. The Language Arts Department strives to enrich the student's cul- tural interests and his appreciation for his own language and literature. Miss Fields is ready to start work, but what about her class? Some students have important things in mind besides reading , ww . 23 Perhaps your conception of Miss Newton is that of a zany comedienne The description fits, but she is only an English teacher ready to instruct and laugh. Mrs. Jarrell is the teacher of seventh grade English courses. She was born at Harpersville, Alabama, and she received her degree from Jacksonville State University. Her hobbies are reading and sewing. We anticipate her return next year. During her first year at Lindley, Miss Culver, a teacher of Remedial Reading, has brightened the lives of many students. She attended Murray State University where she also received her degree in Home Economics. I 1 E1 Tora , doesn't exactly resemble the cry of an English gram- mar and literature teacher, but in this case you've been deceived Miss Hall is also a Spanish teacher and sponsor of the Spanish Club. Her main hobby is traveling which she put to use last sum- mer when she toured Spain with a group of students. She has also taken a European tour and she enjoyed it thoroughly. This summer she plans to attend the University of Mexico while she stays with a fam ily in Mexico City. 24 5 Miss Anderson's birthplace is Clarkesbury, West Virginia. PHYSICAL ED UCA TION - Coach Cuddy has helped in our Physical Fitness Plan for two years. He is known as a very cheerful person by all the students he teaches. We think that he is a splendid teacher. 30 The physical education department is one of the most important de- partments of our school. Although not taken by every student in the school, it is taken as an elective by much of the student body. Coaches Cuddy, Turk, and McCord instruct the boys, while Miss Lind- sey and Mrs. Cole instruct the girls. Physical education is very important. If a person is not phy- sically fit, he is not capable of doing his best mentally or socially. During the physical education class, the boys do such things as push-ups jumping-jacks, and leg-lifts. Dur- the summer the boys compete among themselves in outdoor sports, such as softball and football. Dur- ing the winter, they do exercises in the gym and play basketball, and wrestle. In the summer months, the girls receive their physical fit- ness by doing various exercises to stimulate the continued growth of strong and healthy bodies. Softball and soccer are enjoyed by the girls. During the winter months they do exercises in the gym, engaging in innumerable activities which are de signed to further stimulate physical fitness. -1 141.1 ..f l Coach McCord is the girl's basketball coach and is also a football coach. Here Mrs. Cole is showing a girl how to tumble. Mr. Shepherd teaches seventh, S CIE Mr. Hollifield teaches ninth grade biology and physical science. His students know him as a serious and dedi- cated teacher. His outside interests include hunting and fishing. This is Mr. Hollifield's second year at Lindley. CE The Science Department consists of physical science, general science, and biology. The seventh and eighth graders are taking general science, and the ninth graders are divided into two sections, physical science, and biology with the more advanced students taking biology. General science consists of a study in generalized form of all of the sciences, touching on the basic propon- ents individual to and characteristic of the various sciences. Physical science deals with the natural sciences. In physical science, students learn the natural elements, chemistry, and constituents of the atmosphere. Biology is the study of all living things. Biology teaches the students the processes of the living cell, plant and animal growth and reproduction, and the reasons that man is superior to other living things. The goals of the various sciences are to teach the students how to answer a problem by experimen- tation, to acquire basic principles of science, to introduce worthwhile hobbies, to introduce occupa- tions in the field of science, to answer questions about the universe, to teach students how to form their own ideas, to acquaint students with outstand- ing scientists and to give the students a foundation for further education in the fields of science. xfgu eighth, and ninth grade science. L ,-- -u-5 nf' ,--1 A new face at Lindley, Miss Drisco arrived at the beginning of the second semester. She teaches seventh and eighth grade General Science courses. Her goal is to give the students a promising future in the science field. 33 SOCIAL STUDIE Mr. Sullivan, personable and capable, is a most un- tiring teacher. He is duly recognized by his students as being fully aware of their needs, and he tries to fulfill their needs as he is capable of doing so. , Mr. Hardy is a large link in our Social Studies Department. He is the director of the department and the sponsor of the Beta Club. There are six teachers of Social Studies, Mr. Hardy, Mrs. Turk, Mr. Sullivan, Miss McMackin, Miss McCormick, and Mr. Robertson. These experienced teachers give their students the best in Social Studies education. They contribute greatly to the knowledge of the stu- dents at Lindley. Social Studies, being a major sub- ject, requires a number of teachers of the highest caliber. These teachers certainly fulfill these re- quirements. They are teachers which we are proud of and are very grateful to for their services to the school and to the student body. We think that this year's Social Studies Department is of if not the best in the Cobb County System, and that they should be commended for the fine job they are doing. Mr. Robertson, who is outstanding in his field of Social Studies, is al- so sponsor of the Student Council, which proves him to be willing to help his students. 34 We Mr. Robertson explains the importance of the French and Indian War while his class pays close attention to these interesting tidbits of information. They presented a successful one-act drama titled Vacation On The Moon to the Lindley P.T.A. during American Education Week. The dramatics group also had a money-raising projects, sponsoring a soc-hop in January which was most successful, One of the biggest undertaking by any club was accomplished most professionally by this group, the presentation of the play, The Glass Menagerie . The play was pro- well, a teacher who has several years of professional stage performances to his credit. This year the Beta Club has sponsored many activities. They sponsored a sock-hop, they sold Stanley Products. They also sponsored a Tacky -Day , since it was a success last year The sponsors are Mr. Hardy and Miss Mc- Reynolds. The Y-Teens plans to take a trip to the rest home this coming Spring. This group will do much and has done much for many people in our community and school. The feeling of many people around your and my community is if our school had more club and organizations like the Y-Teens it would be a better place to live. This club is worth supporting in many people's opinion and we hope you will support them when it is necessary. They are a clean, worthwhile, happy group that is willing to help you and me. 48 HI-2' Last year the boys of the Hi-Y at Lindley voted for the name Beta Chi junior Hi-Y. Mr. Siler, no longer at Lindley started from scratch to form the club. The Hi-Y had a softball team and won all of their games. The games were played against other clubs. This year Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Connor have done an excellent job with the Hi-Y. The members of the Hi-Y and Mr. Connor, and Mr. Sheppard are doing all they can to make the Hi-Y a great organization for the future students of Lindley. A scrapbook has been kept by the club secretary along with the min- utes of each meeting. The Beta Chi Hi-Y is affiliated with the YMCA of Marietta. Someone may ask these questions: What does a person achieve by being a member of the Hi-Y or the YMCA? Isn't the Hi-Y all work and no play? Most of the members of the Hi-Y would tell you that what they achieve is a feel- ing, a feeling that they have helped others . These eight girls have contributed much to the hustle and bustle of ac- tivities around the school. The par- ticipation given to the chicken din- ner sponsored by the Lindley Booster Club, the decoration of the hallswith posters telling you when and where the games will be and others are all a part is the cheerleaders efforts to encourage enthusiasm and school spirit into the school life. Much is done by them which is not known by the student body. This in- cludes the hours spent preparing for the pep rallies on those few scattered Fridays. It is thought that cheerleaders have the excuse of not having enough time for work and assignments. This is far from the truth. They have to have a B average. If this is not maintained, then you are no longer on the squad. The cheerleaders have had a good year, but much of the credit is to be given to Miss Jay. Homecoming is a big and wonderful affair at any school and it was at Lindley. Debby was the first homecoming queen for Lindley Junior High School. She was choosen to be the homecoming queen by the students. The queen and her court consisted of five students. They are as fol- lows: Kerri Herring, Debbie Darby, Carolyn Roach, Sherry Tumblin, and the queen, Debbie Freeman. The escorts were Kenny Sosebee, Larry Powers, R. B. Dolan, Ed Acree, and Larry Ivester. The students elected Debbie during the homeroom periods before the homecoming. No one knew who the queen was until the night of the game. Lindley played Marietta at the homecoming and Lindley stomped Marietta twenty to seven. There was a very large crowd of Lindley supporters at the homecoming. At half-time the winning girl was announced and the large crowd let out a terrific scream. The principal Mr. Kenneth Moore crowned Debbie and presented the roses to her. The cheerleaders surrounded Debbie with congratulations and kisses. The sponsors of the homecoming were Mrs. Cole and Mr. Robertson. Many thanks should be given to these people because they gave up a lot of their time and effort in working and rehearsing with the queen, her court, and the escorts. 69 FIRST ROW left to right, 7th Grade, Kerri Herring 8th Grade, Debbie Darby 9th Grade Carolyn Roach Queen, Debbie Freeman, 9th Grade Sherry Tumblrn SECOND ROW escorts Kenny Sosebee Larry Powers, R. Kathy, has been the leading scorer for Lindley in every game we have played this year. Lois Steed has been a considerably good scorer all year. Lois gets between 8-14 poinis every game. Gail Etheridge has come on strong in the last few games to do a good job at forward. Sharon Ballenger Qa seventh graderj, has been a starter on and off all year and has done a good job despite her small size. The guards at Lindley were very inexperienced at the start of the year. Johnnie Bogozan has been our best guard game in and game out this year. Debbie Freeman, Kathy Poole, Kaye Fouts, Gail Etheridge, Sue Figura, and Jeri Huggins, have turned in good performances this year. With three games to go this year on our schedule Kathy Parris is averaging 20 pts. a game and Lois Steed is averaging ll pts. a game. 'These two girls are the captains of the 1966-67 girls team and have done a splendid job as ball players and as captains of the team. I have enjoyed working with the Cirl's Basketball team this year. They have worked hard and have never given up at any time. They have given 100170 at all times while playing regardless of the score. These girls are a good group any way you look at it. 'I'hey have been a pleasure to work with and there have been few dull moments with these girls. 76 i i Managers STEVE BEARD AND TONY HAY- NIE are the girls managers, they have helped a lot with our girls success.
