Why must the door which leads beyond the gloom Be only open wide enough to let Me see one soul before a slate and get No more from that than what I might assume? I wonder at those two fogged smears of white That stand out through the grave door's three squared panes And stretch behind the man Whose Words I see, But cannot read because he writes too light- Ly his one dusty line-so, though his right hand strains, Just he and careful light formed shades shine through to me. V.R.K. Administration and Faculty i X Q E Fifteenth President Inaugurated Represented in the inaugural academic procession are distinguished delegates from some 250 colleges and universities throughout the country and also 24 learned societies and associations. john Anthony Brown, Jr., was formally in- augurated as the fifteenth president of Lindenwood College on October 20, l966. Following the presentation of the president- elect by Dr. F. L. McCluer, President emeritus, Dr. Brown was installed in office by john M. Black, President of the Board of Directors of Lindenwood College. Dr. Calvin Darlington Linton, dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at the George Washington University, was the principal speaker of the afternoon. An enthusiastic audience received his remarks on the role of the liberal arts college today. Ceremonies concluded with Dr. Brown's in- augural address. To a responsive crowd numbering about one thousand persons, the new President spoke of his esteem for the college community, and also suggested several modifications in its structure. The audience seemed most receptive to his proposing the possibility of a male enrollment in the math and sci- ence departments, provided that, as Dr. Brown em- phasized, no qualified young woman were denied admission. Lindenwood students will long remember Mr. Gillis insight into the problems facing us today, and his knack for genuine humor. Brief remarks were also made by student leaders from Washington University, St. Louis University, Westminster College, and Lindenwood. g'The New Student was well re- ceived, and set a tenor of excitement for the entire day. The Rev. Theodore Gill, former professor of religion and Dean of the Chapel at Lindenwood, speaks at the morning convocation. I6 A beautiful Buffet luncheon, complete with smoked oysters and Swedish meatballs, was served for all inaugural delegates and guests. Caterers, Chefs, and excellent food gave a special flair of im- portance to what is usually termed Hinstitutional foodf' A reception immediately following the In- augural service afforded Lindenwood students and delegates an opportunity to become acquainted with each other, and to personally give congratulations to Dr. and Mrs. Brown. dministration DR. JOHN ANTHONY BROWN President of the College MARLENE HART, Secretary MARY E. YONKER, Secretary to the President 18 In his first year with us at Lindenwood, we have seen Dr. Brown invite drenched students to eat din- ner at his table after a hilarious water fightg sneak down for an hour to ride 4'Little Johnug feed the fire in the libraryg take a genuine interest in the problems facing our publications and Student Governmentg instigate the conversion of curriculum to a more pro- gressive 4-l-4 program, beginning with a co-educa- tional summer sessiong and be a devoted husband and father to a fine family. To him nothing is too small in the realm of time for stopping and consideringg to him no challenge is so great that it cannot be met full force with confidence and patient understanding. We welcome Dr. Brown to Lindenwood and hope that 1966-67 is the first of many successful years not only for him, but also for Lindenwood. In addition to rearing her family, Mrs. Brown also finds time for active participation in campus affairs. S The third program in Lin- denwood,s concert-lecture series featured Willis Stev- ens, associate professor of piano at Southern Illinois University. A noted pianist, Mr. Stevens has appeared many times in recital on col- lege campuses. His perfor- mance on November 21 in- cluded works of Brahms, Bach, Chopin, and Debussy. Karl Wolfram, lutenist-singer of German folk songs, presented the second program in this year's concert- lecture series on October 11. Mr. Vifolfram, widely acclaimed through- out Europe and America as a revivalist of the art of minstrelsy, accompanied himself on several stringed instru- ments. His interesting repertoire in- cluded a unique selection of ancient love songs and epoch ballads in various German dialects. The lecture was given on Nov- ember l6 in the chapel. Dr. Hood views the historian as a public figure whose work ought to contribute to the solution of social problems. The largest aspect of the his- torian's responsibility is his role as a creator of reality. Dr. Hood has estab- lished an outstanding reputation at Lin- denwood as a lecturer, teacher. and Stu- dent counselor. 200 Dr. james F. Hood '. He spoke objectively about the diplomatic consequences of a decision concerning the war. He also emphasized Red China, and lamented the fact that people know so little about such a powerful country. 201 Cotillion March ll was a night to be remembered by all those students who attended the 1967 Cotillion at the Chase. The Social Council really outdid themselves-gone were the coke bottles. In their place a beautiful punch fountain. The style show on Thursday gave the student body the opportunity to view all the candidates, and select a queen. The striking court bowed to Parker Hallis representative, lovely queen, Vicki Hand. Those who remained after the coronation, danced to the music of the Russ David orchestra. Vicki graciously receives bouquet of red roses from retiring queen Judith Prowse of Sibley Hall. Two Lindenwood swimmers won firsts at the annual Sports Day at the University of Missouri at Columbia. Michael Shelton, a junior, swam the 50 yard butterfly in 30.1 seconds, and her sister Candy, a freshman, set a record of 35.6 sec- onds in the 50 yard backstroke. L.C.'s extra- mural teams also did quite well competing in hockey, basketball and volleyball. The intramural tennis tournament was won by Ayres Hall, while the Day Students won both the badminton and swimming competitions. Basketball, riding, volleyball, softball and bowling were held later in the year. Many hours of practice proved worthwhile in L.C.'s hockey victories over Kirksville and Fontbonne. The swim team prepares for an annual meet at the University of Missouri at Columbia. 204 In amazement, students and friends watch a rough and ble game of Rugby between two St. Louis area teams on denwood's campus. A mixer followed the event. The evening of October 14 brought the final installment in a series of changes which had been taking place on campus during the preceding week. We had watched our campus being slowly cleaned and Mspiffed up in expectation of Parents, Week- end. Mother Nature added the final touch! A tornado cut through the campus, scattering leaves which Hgreen menll had so diligently raked up-and it even managed to throw in a tree or two. Fortunately, the damage was minor and no injuries resulted. Miss Johnson, a graduate of Mt. Holyoke, recently produced her one-act play 6'The Indiscretion of the Meatpack- er's Daughteri' in an off Broadway theatre. With the help of John Wehmer, Miss Johnson designed and supervised the construction of the set. The three act play by Federico Lorca is the culmination of his folk tragedies.
