We do not balance on fearful existence, neither are we cumbered by too much history. Our lands are alive, throbbing free as far as we reachg opportunity follows our footsteps. We are young. More than our low mountains and endless plains of spring wheat, the territory we travel is the world. The restless, glorious decadence of Europe, the turbulent new nations of Africa,-Asia itself is no farther than flight. And space is our unexplored wilderness. A great age, we say, to be living in. To live today requires bravery, as had those who first came to the valleys west of the Mississippi. To live now is to know the reality of rapid change. It is ours to achieve awareness, keep faith, and forward accomplish- ment. The world is .before us and with us at Lindenwood, the world that was Lindenwood has become a challenge to the wider one. For her unfaltering leadership in high ideals, scholarship, and commu nity responsibility, this book is respectfully dedicated to Paulena Nickell Dean of the College. . . . and all that was good you must fight to keep with hearts as devoted as those of your fathers who fought to gain it .... Like those beneath the pin oak trees lining Butler Way, shadows sometimes hide the knowleflge we seekg but the uphill road is an inspiration, and branches right and left to include all of the front campus. fexsaill-Q-w4..ix-.,.,r,,,,e.,,,, L . ,. ,,LLV i. L ROEMER HALL Erected in honor of former President Roemer and dedicated to Lindenwood,s purpose-the Christian education of young women-Roemer Hall was founded in 1920. Other than our familiar classrooms, it contains the business and administra- tion offices, the auditorium, and the popular post office, book store, and bank. MARGARET LEGGAT BUTLER LIBRARY With its holly trees by the heavy oak doors, the Sibley coat-of-arms over the fire- place, and an air of hushed concentration, the library has been one of the loveliest buildings on campus since it was built in 1930. It houses forty thousand books and pamphlets, receives one hundred seventy-five maga- zines and newspapers, and offers students unlimited ac- cess to the stacks. Many meetings and initiations are held in the colorful Library Club Room. ' 4 . ikm 1242? www viva V S+ 3 ,K , 1 'PL ? 1? , iw, W1 fx sg, 3 if: ,m., is qi X: ,,,,. 2-53035. I - IL wi Z5 ,Mai In 1939, the Fine Arts Building became part of the Lindenwood campus, in memory of a past dean and wife of President Roemer. The mingled sounds of vio- lin, voice, and piano drift up from the first floor to the second, where the art stu- dents design and paint. Here are the music and art stu- dios and classrooms, as well as KCLC, the Lindenwood radio broadcasting station. I0 E is S, sa Q S LILLIE P. ROEMER FINE ARTS BUILDING A modern building was added to the College in 1957 with the completion of the new Chapel and St. Charles Presbyterian Church. Weekly chapel and vesper services, at which the Lindenwood College Choir sings, are led by representative members of the com- munity and by guest speakers. The Chapel's Fellowship Hall is the scene of many College dinners, as well as presentations of theater-in-the-round. LINDENWOOD CHAPEL Most of the freshmen live in Niccolls Hall, which was built in 1916 in memory of The Reverend Samuel ,lack Niccolls, D.D., by his friend, Colonel James Gay Butler. The basement practice rooms with pianos and pipe organs often provide an accompaniment to the dormitory life of this year's one hundred seventeen girls.
