This organization was instituted for the purpose of enabling the students at Lindenwood College to assume individual responsibility in their own life and conduct in the College. Since this date the organization has gained in prestige and has become more ofa vital factor in the life of all the students. All matters pertaining to the conduct of the girls in their daily life, which are not academic or reserved to the faculty's jurisdiction, are under the control of the Student Government Association. This year, more than ever before, the girls of the entire student body have felt a responsibility in the affairs of Student Government. They have seemed to realize that the pleasure and pro-fitableness of their college life depended on their own interest. Student Government has proved itself to be one of the fore- most factors in the development of the best ideals among the girls, not only in stimulating a greater degree of college loyalty and a hearty spirit of co-operation, but also in nurturing demo- cratic ideas, an essential phase of our present-day education. With the lofty principles of loyalty, co-operation, democracy, and in fact all that Student Government stands for, ever before them, the girls of Lindenwood will leave her portals as young women with noble purposes in life, fully equipped to assume the duties and tasks set before them. Stately Sibley dozed lazily in the bright sun- light. Imposing Niccolls, handsome Jubilee and friendly Butler seemed at ease, idly enjoying the warmth of the beautiful morning. Only Roemer Hall showed signs of activity. She appeared to yawn and stretch indo- lently as though half regretting to awake from so peaceful a sleep. Upon the shady campus birds chirped and squirrels chattered. A calm south wind slightly rustled the leaves of the trees. Farther down Butler Way, the dignified old King of the Campus stretched its great branches toward the sun and moved them back and forth as the wind played through their leaves. About its great trunk two squirrels played hide-and-seek, scolding and chattering as they ran. The old Monarch was apparently expecting someone for he nodded toward the entrance to the driveway every now and then and called softly to his fellows, lt is almost time for Linden'- wood to awake. Yes, they responded, she has slept steadily throughout the whole summer. Suddenly a car turned in at the driveway. It was followed by sev- eral others. V g Here they come! called the King of the Campus and the suppressed voices of the other trees echoed, Here they come! Wake up, Linden- wood! The girls are returning! Slowly, slowly Lindenwood shook off her summer drowsiness. Cars sped rapidly up her driveway and stopped before the doors of Jubilee. Girls xalighted, jumped up and down gleefully and called to one another. Then an atmosphere of bustling activity surrounded the place. The famil- iar sounds were heard again, the old girls shouted a welcome to the new, while down on Butler Way the old King of the Campus swayed his lofty branches in the wind and murmured to himself with satisfaction, Linden- wood is awake againf' -F1-:ANc'lQs S'rUM1sHBu. .H Loherfs Reiorf to I-fir Ficfife Lady They rarrlw arm' fold rnr' that you did not f'arf', Tlmf I fo you ufas just anofhrfr toy,- Wlz.ir'l1 you zrould cast aside into flu' air Wl2.f'1z others camo to you zritlz. SZ..S'f67'.Y Undef' tfze Sign lt is a long call lll'0Il1 the Stone Age to modern times. It was a long, long ti111e ago that the first cave-man rolled the stone against the front-door of his cave, grasped his great elub firmly, and strode away to lay the skill of the bear he had killed that day at the feet of his beloved. It has been a matter of only a few hours since the last Hcake- eater ate the last chocolate in the box of HXNl1ltI1l3H,SH that he had given the fiapper upo11 whoni he had ealled that evening, cranked his Ford, and rattled hoine. i Upon the receipt of the bear-skin the cave-woman doubtless said to her husky lover, My, what a lovely new dress this Skill will make! How did you know that this shade of bear-skin matches my eyes ex- actly? How brave you were to kill such a big bear! And the eave- man felt that his suit was progressing. Say, this is great! How in the world did you know that I liked earamels? Clever boy. Thus the flapper greeted her swain, and he, too, felt encouraged. Between the young woman of 1 B. C. and the young woman of 1925 A. D. there is very little real difference. The modern young woman bobs her hair, dresses like a boy, and does just about as she pleases, but underneath all of this boyishness Hlld independence there is just an ordinary girl, with the same feelings and same desires that girls have always had. Perhaps you will say that, even if there is no wide difference be- tween the wo111en of the so-called upper-class and those of the 'flower-class. I think that the difference between the great-lady and the ''eoninion-wonian'' is i11 the klllll of clothes that they wear, and in their speech. They both like music, Mrs. Vanliaan hears it at the opera, and Mrs. 0'Hara hears it as it is played by an organ-grinder. Now comes my pathetique: The ,first nzovenzent is one of despair W'ith the gloom of bassoons In profound rnvelancholy. The second, in the violins and eellos, Is all snfeetness and pathos. And the third, Adagio lanzentoso, Sounds all the ufoe of my tragic lone-- The strings ireep, the horns u'ail, And my heart breaks in shattered flutenotes. Yet you are unmored, .find I seein to hear you eonzplain: Cond you play a little jazz? Jlfafffa-Eelz'efzze I am in love with the Land of Make-believe. None of the weary warnings of the wise shall shake my belief in that charming, rose-hued. beckoning land. No Land of Make-believe? Oh but there is! Pretend, and you shall follow the rainbow trail to the Land of Make-believe. VVhen Reality-that cold, concise, inanimate thing, which drive:- on, and, even with a promise of high-hearted adventure, drags itself on toward the gray afternoon of hope, the bloom of its dawning promise rubbed to stark boniness, its trailing garlands lying in the ashes of dis- illusionment-on the eve of despair, what a tragedy were it not for the Land of Make-believe. There, out of the sordidness of a 1nunda.ne world, the part of you that swings along blithely-the mellowed spirit of you distilled from the long-trampled dilliculties, becomes sometliing rich and fine and miraculously daring. There we build a castle where the cottage tumbled down, and we plant a flower where we buried a hope, and we sweep clean the hearth where we burned our mistakes-there, there, in the Land of Make-believe. lt is a. great moment, that, when the dead weight of the earth falls away and the soul of man rides free. It is an immortal glimpse into the azure and golden dreams of the world that might yet be. How could a dream come true if you IIOVGI' dreamed it, how could a wish unfold it' you never breathed it, how could a castle be built if you never planned it? lVhere does the dream and the wish and tl1e plan assume form? VVe eat Ellltl sleep and sometimes die and are laid aside by the workmen of Reality. 'Twould have been a much rosier path to have followed had there been sunshine and laughter, green grass and the dropping, dropping of pink cherry blooms-in the Land of Make-believe. There is no Land of Make-believe, where earth falls away and men's souls are free? O, yes-I know, for I've plucked rainbow gifts from its shore. Well, it is an education in itself to see and hear how the college student twists and distorts the English language into catch phrases which best suit her own needs. The Freshmen Rhetoric class is on the warpath against slang but its crusade does not always turn out successfully. Instead of calling a person by her name you call her kid or honey and hi takes the place of hello on the campus. You find that the dean is called a bird, the teachers are referred to as owls and even the president of the college is called a sweet old duckief' Now this does not mean that the average college faculty is taken from the feathered tribe of animals, but the students must nick-name their exponents of knowledge and that is the way in which they do it. The night before exams you hear weary-eyed and haggard-faced, seek- ers of knowledge talking about cracking a book all night. They really do not intend to hack up a book with a hatchet or some other sharp edged weapon. but they mean that they will try to get a semester's work in a few hours. You often hear an experience described as thrilling , and a thing described as darling, adorable or cute In fact, cute is a favorite expression and it is used to describe anything from golf-courses to tea cakes. A text book is apt to be a perfect dumb-flora even though the author has spent years of his life in frantically searching for the correct knowledge to put into it. Young men become dates and are a main topic of conversation on Sunday nights. lf you have a Hdatel' you get a big kick out of Sunday vesper servicesg but if you haven't you usually slumber gently through the service and try not to snore until the amen is said. Your fellow suierers consider you a prize dumbbell if you prefer to spend your few hours of leisure in the library instead of in the tea room. On the other hand, your teachers consider you a prize dumbbell if you do not live in the library-so there you are. That just about makes the average student a prize dumbbell under all circumstances. Only in class rooms do you hear quantities spoken of in terms of cor- rect English. On the campus a quantity of any kind is expressed as a gob,,' therefore you love your crush just gobs or you eat gobs,' of candy-sometimes both at the same time. Just what a crush means is known only to a college student but it does not mean anything mashed or multilated in anyway. When the postman brings you a letter he is a precious adorable thing, but when he doesn't then he is a big goof You can't exactly explain what a goof is because a goof is just a goof and that is all there is to it. College life even has a language of its own besides its slang. You hear such phrases as Whatta ya doin ? , didja see th show las nite, and where ye goin honey chile ? Yeah is substituted for yes and unuh is used for no. My roommate just asked me if I had finished my theme for Wednesday and I replied- yeah ! PWRANCES TRADER. AIARY LOYISE BLOCHER, Page 149 Kqllege Qjllglldllf' Once upon a time there dwelt a King and Queen who lived so happily together, and agreed so well, that whatever the King did the Queen thought it so well done that no one could do it better. No matter what he did, she thought it was always the right thing. This King and Queen ruled supreme for all save three months of the year during which the subjects scattered to the ends of the globe. Each fall the King proclaimed a great festival or reunion, and invited thereto subjects from far and near. When they arrived they were all set in classes, accord- ing to their rank and standing: First the Princesses, then the Cinderellas, the Step- sisters, and last of all, the Commoners. As soon as the subjects were thus arranged, the work of the Dominion began. This year there was an unusual fete, for, during the summer -months a new palace had been built and as the time drew near for its completion, great preparation was made for the celebration. Princesses and Princes came from the surrounding country, and lo and behold! one of the Cinderellas lost her heart that day. As is always the case in a vast kingdom, the Commoners have to be subdued, and so there followed a reign of terror administered by the Step-sisters. Days would have been sad indeed had not the time of Thanksgiving rolled around, when friendship and good-will once more p1'evailed among the subjects. The King pro- claimed a holiday and great was the joy thereof. So great was the feeling of gratitude and love of the Commoners toward their gracious Queen that they gave a high feast. Many noble guests were bidden, and an exceedingly splendid Court gathered to pay homage in honor of the Queen's birthday. Wherefore, when the King and Queen looked about them and beheld such peace and amity among all the nobles, quoth the King, Certes, it is wonderful how this reign of ours hath knit people together in kindness and good fellowship! And so the year moved on, undisturbed save by infrequent misdeeds committed by thoughtless subjects who pay the price imposed by the King's Council-moved on toward Christmastide when the Yule-logs burn brightly, and the benevolent rulers send their subjects away, filling the highways and railways with light-hearted way- farers. And it must have been a joyous time indeed, for a Princess and a Step-sister met a Sir Knight. The New Year sent the subjects hurrying back to the Dominion. But before they could continue in the service of the King, they must overcome the Final Tests- Trial by Fire fof questionsb. Straightway, for those surviving, entertainers came to Court and presented The Rivals. Whereupon, there being minstrels and dancers among the populace, they vied with the foreigners and played Oh, Girls! Following close upon this came the King's proclamation of another holiday- an Easter recess. When these days had passed, all so swiftly, much excitement ran high since it was made known throughout the Kingdom that the Cinderellas were going to punish the evil Step-sisters. But in the midst of this excitement, two hither- to worthy subjects, a Princess and a Cinderella, must needs be humbled by the King and Queen, which o'ershadowed the coming event. But the Wheel of Time moves on, and the Cinderellas meted out punishment to the Step-sisters, who had been unkind to the Commoners. They also showed due respect to the Princesses by giving a banquet as a special honor. But the great event of the vear followed fast upon this minor event. The Second Trial being over, all the Kingdom was in a great ferment of joy, for this was the festival of Spring. and the Hour of Beginning Again. The Princesses had survived four years of Labor at the King's Court and now commenced their true joy as Queens of all they survey. This was the beginning for them, and it will be the end of this story. -ANON.
