And will he be able to reflect back and say, 'All My Children have been especially good this year? Will the teachers take the students from the Edge of Night into the dawn of a new day by providing the Guiding Light, they so desper- ately need? Will the seniors stay around home or will they head for Dallas in their Search for To- morrow? Will the Linden Sport's Dynasty once again dominate the G.E.C.? Will the students give enough blood at the Linden General Hospital to make the Blood- Mobile a success? Will the Student Council keep pace As the World Turns and make the necessary deci- sions to improve the quality of school life? And finally, will the Yearbook Staff reveal the answers to these important questions and capture the true reality of student life, as they present an illustrated memory of THE DA YS OF OUR LIVES? Crown At the beginning of the 1980 football season, many people were critical of the new coach- ing staff, especially after a loss to rival Fenton. But as the sea- son went on the team gained momentum and won their last four games including state ranked Hamady. The 1981 season opened with a great deal of enthusiasm as the Eagles trounced rival Fen- ton by a 41-13 score. Soon after- wards the team was rated 5th in the state, and went on to win 11 straight games over a two year period. Falling to Montrose by a 20-25 score, crushed the Ea- gles hope of a perfect season. With one game left the seniors gathered up their pride to crush Hamady 40-0! Our gridders finished as Co- Champions in the G.E.C. and once again had the ifl defense and improved their offense to rank ifl also. The Eagle secondary which picked off a record 22 passes in 80, again had a great year with 19. The running backs each had an equal chance to carry the ball. Linden's linemen where the smallest in the league but had an outstanding year. All of these are nice but the bottom line is the Varsity Football Team success came from team- work! After losing the sea- son opener to Fenton, the J.V. Eagles rebounded and won the next eight in a row. Hard work and a great attitude towards the games helped the Eagles to ob- tain success. Sophmore, Vic Millington, led the Eagles in rushing by going 779 yards in 8 games. Quarterback Al Marsh, directed the offense effectively by throwing for 5 touchdowns and running for 7 more. Hats off to Coach Smith for doing a fine job with the offensive line. Not only did the Eagles have a potent offense, but a stubborn defense led by linebackers, Wayne Berry, Tony Torres, and safety Mike Ackley. They held opponents to less than a touch- down a game. 'G' V544 'I' -2 ,- N U R VARSITY BASKETBALL At age 30, Linden girls' Basketball coach Cliff Totzke was a success. Our sports society usually judges success upon how much a team wins, and in that respect, Totzke has seen only limited good fortune. But beyond that he has built a team atmosphere that was unequalled among the four area squads. Although Fenton, Holly, and Lake Fenton all had fine pro- grams and good records to go along with them. For some rea- son, the Eagles were different. Watching Linden play, we were reminded of that We are Fah-mily craze made popular by the Pittsburg Pirates a few years back. The fundamental difference between the two situa- tions is that here there was no dancing in the streets and, well, not as much winning. The Linden girls were a closely-knit family. There was a lot of hugging and hand-holding in the huddle, and always plenty of smiles. One gets the idea that the Eagles were really having fun out there, and that winning wasn't as all important as it's supposed to be. WIN OR LOSE, WE'RE This year, the Linden Girls Varsity Basketball team finished an impressive 6th place in the Genesee County League with a 6-8 record, and an overall 9-13 record. The team at Parent's Night! STILL A SUCCESS The Lady Eagles started out the season disappointing, losing three non-league games. The girls picked up the tempo and went on to win many of their next games. High- lights included: a one point victory over Goodrich, defeat- ing area rival, Lake Fenton and slashing state ranked New Lothrop 37-32. The biggest win for the team was a very impressive victory over league champs, the Hamady Hawks. The team also accomplished something special in District tournaments as they defeated Brandon 53-39, but went on to be defeated by Hartland. Special Awards given this year went to Linda Millington, Coaches Award, Debbie Johnson, Most Valuable Player, Lisa Schaefer, Most Improvedg and a special defensive award to Junior, Sheryl Urban. Other awards were also given to Kelli Hintz for First Team, All League. And to Lisa Schaefer and Debbie Johnson for Honorable Mention, All-League. Besides bringing out the spirit in the fans, the girls also demonstrated their all-round skills by performing a glove routine to Back in Black, and a spirit promoting Halloween skit, at a football pep assembly. As the job op- portunities have dwindled, the students more than ever, needed these programs to gain some practical job skills and ex- perience to help them enter the job market. Many students, however, were able to get jobs, while still in school, by partici- pating in a vocational co-op program. The poor economy and reductions in placement personnel made getting jobs more difficult, but the ones who were able to find employment gained a great deal from their work experience. Pictured here are a number of stu- dents in vocational classes and on their co-op jobs. They are either working at or being trained in areas of auto me- chanics, small engines, clerical, book- keeping, sales, carpentry, and nursing. The class started working on the play at the beginning of second semester and the main characters even worked during Easter Vacation. The plot involved a group of American students who were on a utrarnping through Europe tour and found them- selves lost in the Carpation Mountains. The story grew into a chilling experience when the students paid some eerie looking hosts to allow them rooms for the night in a huge castle. The students soon found out that they were in no ordinary castle. Strange things started happening, includ- ing the sighting of Dracula, himself. Overall, the play was a real success. A lot of the credit goes to the director and 5th hour teacher, Donna Tom- chuck. She gave many hours of her own time in order to make the play successful. There a lot of new records set by several girls. Penny Garrison set a freshman record for the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.0. Anastasia Kogut broke a class record in the discus, with a toss of 'df 89'6 . A school record was broken by sophomore GH-'L A standout Kris Mann in the 100 and 200 meter low pswfr hurdles. Fin ishing off the season with a 19-12 overall record and capturing 3rd place in the G.E.C. with a 9-4 record, Coach Hopkins expects to have a strong nucleous to comprise the 1983 team. Some of the young standouts were: Freshman Chad Joslin, pitching 4 wins and 3 loses and striking out 54 batters, and Sophomore Charlie Rice pitching 6 wins and 1 loss and striking out 53 batters. At the plate, Sophomore Scott Smith who achieved an impressive 426 batting average and 27 walks, breaking both of these school records. Junior Rob Thompson earned a 349 batting average and broke the school record for stolen bases with 21 and joining him is Junior Mike Ryan who achieved a batting average of 292 and led the team with 5 home runs. Compiling a 15-12 overall record, and a 9-5 league record was the result of lots of hard work and dedicated hours to build a solid foundation upon which the fu- ture of Linden baseball will be based. The team hit at a .291 batting average, with 7 players hitting over the .300 mark for the sea- son. Of the regulars, who played most every game, Vince Tata led the team with a hefty .397 batting average, getting 29 hits in 73 times at the plate. Thirteen of Vinces 29 hits were for extra bases, as he led the team with 7 home runs, 2 going for grand-slams. Mike Ackley had 1 a fine season at the plate.
