N Rl T711 'i-if-5 PREFACE Lnnden Hugh School 1955 long remembered as The Year of Change To the on looker the procedure mught have appeared the same but thus was not so All of us wull remember 1955 as a year of change fun and learmng The extended sesslon came to Linden Hugh In September 1954 The sophomores tumors and sensors entered the school at 7 45 and left at 'l 50 of course a few unfortunates had classes until 2 30 The freshman made thelr entrance at 9 45 and stayed untll 4 OO We have taken thus unusual sntuatnon as the theme of the 1955 Cynosure and have traed to show students partlclpatnng rn all the events of the past year To follow through with our theme The Year of Change we have changed the order of the book The sensor sectnon normally found In the be gunnmg of the yearbook we placed last The class s appear ln order starting with the fresh men Followlng the class sectlon us the club and actuvuty portuon of the Cynosure In thus way we felt we could better show the development of students as they became well rounded sensors through the help of the various student GCTIVITIES 'M The faculty formed a vntal por tnon of our school Theur guudance and knowledge helped mold the cntlzens of tomorrow from the students of today Our leaders through the most Important and trylng years of our llves they acted as a helplng hand to every student During the year The Year of Change the faculty and Board of Educatlon remained patient and understanding The Board of Education and the admlnlstra tlon held an nmportant yob They were not only responsuble for making the present pollcnes work as efflcuently as possuble but also terra workers and manntenance crew were responsnble for feed :ng the students and keeplng the school repalred Along with the other changes thus year a famlllar face was mlsslng from our mldst Mrs Pot ter a quiet charming teacher who devoted her tume and unter ests to teaching Lnnden students passed away on August 6 l954 Mrs Potter loved by all who knew her wall long be remem bered for her sweet smlle and un assumlng way Although the year of V955 has been 'The Year of Change we can be thankful that our leaders remained the same planning for the future. XXX A HALLOWEEN BRINGS FUN AND PRIZES Thus year following the custom for Halloween our talented art students decorated the store windows of Lmden They worked during and after school for three days to prepare their entries Students competed for prizes in Hal loween sublects and artistic compost tions Three artists selected the winners on the basis of originality neatness and color Robert Rapasky Marianne Kro chak and Mary Jaslnowucz won art supplies as prizes in the Halloween sub 'ect group Dorothy Symco Jack Spiegel for the most artistic Another gay event always looked for ward to at Halloween was the election ofthe kung and queen Names of sixteen seniors were placed on boxes throughout the town The general public by drop ping pennies in the boxes selected Eileen Callahan and Alan Campbell as final winners and they proudly reigned over the Halloween parade The final touch to the evening was the annual Halloween Milk Bar dance which many attended In costume As part of the proceedings winners of the Hallow een art contest and costume winners re cesved therr prizes These gay celebra tions added much to the spirit of Hal loween In the city Artist Jack Spiegel completes his prize winning creation. The athletic committee scheduled and reported on the various athletic events. They also sponsored the senior- faculty basketball game. The sunshine committee spread cheer by sending get- well cards to ill students. The welcoming committee introduced new students to our school The club ccmmuttee formed new clubs and received reports on the functions of the established clubs The honor roll committee compiled the honor roll lists The publicity committee publicized the work cf the council The mcst important committee of the council the assembly committee spon sored and directed all assembly pro grams This group attempted to enlarge the cultural background of the student further school community relationships and teach self understanding through creative endeavor ln order to be a member of this committee one needed an interest in the work of planning school programs and an ability to per- form. The Year of Change also applied to our Cynosure staff. Our new advisor introduced several changes- one of the most important of these ideas was the addition of iuniors to the editorial com- mittee. The senior, faculty, and underclass sections went to the printer before UCES MANY CHANGES Christmas After vacation we returned to six hectic weeks cf confusion head aches writing and rewriting proof reading and layout work The time lit rally f1ew by and the 1955 Cynosure went to press in March Advertising played an important part in the yearbook Burt Eisenbud the ad vertismg manager and the staff accom pllshed a great deal of work selling a tctal cf over S1100 in ads The business manager of the yearbook Barbara Stied ler had the responsibility for handling cll the money matters and keeping the books balanced Pictures taken by Frank Binkowski and Jack Carrar played an important part in our yearbook. Dottie Labonia clerical chairman directed the girls of her com- mittee and also did much of the neces- sary typing herself. Sybil Polin editor of the 1955 Cynasure, helped organize the book write copy and plan the layout for various sections. FUTURE NURSES CLUB First row A Mcldy Secretary F Schmidt President H Baker Treasurer P Edzek A Belousofsky Second row G Boisvert C Jones J Parker Miss Ruckert Third row E McCarthy J Bera J Kwiatkowski CLUBS TRAIN FOR FUTURE CAREERS This year several clubs in our school p anned activities which helped prepare students for future careers Visiting hos pltals and talking to nurses kept the members of the Future Nurses of Amer :co busy Miss Rickert our school nurse sponsored this club which opened its membership to anyone interested in nursing Members of Future Teachers of Amer ica visited colleges and observed teach ers in action These ambitious girls also practiced teaching on one another Upper class college preparatory girls in terested in teaching could loin this club directed by Miss Zankel and Mrs Kendall The members of Future Homemakers of America made Christmas packages and entertained orphaned children Our cooking teacher Miss Boyle advised this club which opened its membership to all girls The membe s of the Photography and Mathematics clubs received enloyment from club activities and gained valuable tips toward careers The girls in Photog raphy Club took pictures of each other and studied about photography under the supervision of Mr Ruch Members of the Mathematics Club solved difficult mathematical problems and entered several state contests Miss Reynolds sponsored this club which con slsted of upper classmen who had main tained a B average in mathematics for one year With the helpful influence of these clubs the students became better pre pared for their future FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA First row. Thus year as every year many gurls partucupated un after school sports Each class had a team whuch competed agaunst the others Anyone unterested could partucupate un the games The gurls competed for places on the first team elected theur own captaun and some tumes refereed theur own games ung each of five sports Furst pace earned 75 pounts second 50 and thurd 25 Awards guven on Guft Day uncluded a numeral for 200 pounts L for 300 pounts pun for 400 pounts and a medal for 500 pounts Mary Harrington a mem ber of the class of 1954 receuved the on y medal last year For the first sport the gurls played se vus ball After weeks of competutuon the senuors emerged vuctoruous Next the gu ls competed in foul shooting ln th s sport the gurls showed theur unduvudual talent Each gurl took 75 foul shots ln February the gurls played basket ball Sometumes other schools asked our gurls to play theur teams Thus always turned out to be a loyous event After basketball the gurls played bad munton The gurls agaun showed theur unduvudual talent They played each cther untul only four remauned unde feated these four gurls then played for the top four places In May the gurls played the last sport baseball They played all games at the park across Volley ball enthusiasts try theur skull from the school. All these activities provided the sports-minded girls with an opportunity fcr developing sportsmanship and en- joying leisure time.
