CLASS PROPHECY I couldn't resist the temptation to eavesdrop on the conversation of two members of the class of '$9. David Layton, who was vacationing from Mars, where he had been studying weather patterns, came into a barber shop owned by Tim and Joyce. As David climbed into the chair next to the one I occupied, Joyce came over to give him a manicure, and the two began to discuss the fortunes of the past ten years. David explained that John Lee had brought him back to earth in his new rocket. He was sure they would have made it in record time if John hadn't run out of fuel five million miles from earth. John had told him that Pepper Krise is still in Linden running one of his twenty funeral homes scattered throughout Indiana. Joyce agreed and added, Don Hunsicker is really enjoying life. Re's teaching girls' physical education at Purdue. David wanted to know if John Austin went to Purdue. Oh, yes, answered Joyce. While Tim and I were in Texas last month, we heard so much about the famous .Austin Cattle Ranch that we drove out to see if it could possibly be John's. Sure enough, we found John sitting on the corral fence serenading about sixty head of black angus cattle with his new bass. After visiting with John and his family, continued Joyce, we went into Dallas, where we had reservations at the Conrad-Hilton Hotel. It was there that we saw Gary Milam and his Whing-Dangs playing in the hotel ballroom. David remembered that Sue Carlson had sent him a greeting from Paris, where she is modeling leotards for the world's most famous de- signer. He added, too, that he had heard nothing of Beverly Winger for a long time. Joyce supplied the news that Bev had been traveling with the Har- lem Glob Trotters for the pas4 five years, and at David's startled glance, she hastened to add that Bev is one of their cheerleaders. At this point the postman interrupted the conversation to give Joyce a letter. As she noted the postmark, Joyct hurriedly opened the letter, exclaiming, This is from Carol Clayton. She is teaching at P.S. 132, one of the new elementary schools at Linden. She says that Johnny and Judy Payne are in her class. They're Joan's twins. You know, of course, that Joan has been married for nine years. Carol also suggests that wp watch the Ozark Jubilee on T. V. be- cause Wilma Cummins is now playing guitar and singing on that show each week. I'll have to catch that show while I'm here, remarked David as he got out of the chair and prepared to depart. Why don't you drop by the house tonight and watch it with us? asked Joyce. Janet Krummreich will be there. She stops by once a year when she is making her round of inspection of all space ports. David thanked her, but declined the invitation, explaning that he had to report to Washington without further delay. As he left, I paid my bill and dashed out to get a look at that new rocket of John's. R. Kelly, ■m i i } Cl h Jh J Mr. Polk, I Irs. Wray, N !r. Norris, P GRADE 1958 J. Coopman , B.
