No Shrrley sard she f1n1shed college but Bob Grrmes went to Purdue too where they became better acqualnted As soon as they were out of college they were marrred and now they have sw red headed Shtrley sard she had to be gorng back to the offtce so we told her good by It was noon so Mary Phyllrs and I went to lunch Srnce Mary ltved 1n Lrnden she took us to the Rose bud Tea Room Phyllls and I were surprrsed when we were greeted by the former Mae Cummrns who IS now Madame Rosebud proprtetor of the Rosebud Tea Room Madame Rosebud found us a lovely table and she talked wrth us whrle we ate She tnformed us that her wealth had come to her from the orl well whlch was found tn the backyard of her Krrkpatrlck home We asked about Betty Srmmons and Madame Rosebud told us that Betty had fmally decrded to take the fatal step and marry Al because Jack went back rnto the army and decrded to make ll hrs career When Phyllrs and I had come through Ltnden we saw the Sxmmons Motel so we asked about rt too Madame Rosebud sard that Betty was runnmg the motel and had enlarged rt srnce Llnden had become an tmportant c1ty When we had fmrshed our meal and an hour and a half had gone by we bade Madame Rosebud good by and went on wtthout shopprng Mary went wtth us as she had the afternoon off As we were passmg by the dress shops we spred a gorgeous dress rn one of the wrndows We went mto the shop and asked to see the dress The clerk told us that tt was the latest from Parts and was desrgned by EthelR1tch1e You could have pushed usover wrth a feather We drdn t even know Ethel wanted to desrgn clothes I fell rn love wrth the dress and bought tt When l patd for the dress I saw Margaret Hawkms at the cash regrster She was glad to see us and she told us that M1ss Rrtchre was rn Parts desrgmngclothes She sent her orrgtnals back to Amerrca and Margaret sold them for her In her dress shop Mary asked Margaret what had happened to Dtck Hampton Margaret laughmgly sard Drck went to college and was . . . . , . .,., ,. . . . . , . .. . . ,. . . . 8 . . n - ' I boys. I rememberthe concert at schoolthat year and how tnterested tn mustc he was after that Yes he even went to college Mary satd We looked at the clock and tt was ttme for dtnner We went back to the Rosebud Tea Room to eat be cause they were havtnye a program that ntght After se had eaten the orchestra played a number and we ftnally recogntzed the leader as I C DePlantv Our band dtrector had told us that I C was good tn mustc but we dtdn t really thtnk so But I guess the dtrectorvvasrttht Whenthe orchestra ftntshed the number we called tol C He recobnt ed us rtght awav He always dtd know all the ptrls when he was younger He came over andtalked wtth us and told us that Jane Sabens was sttll worktng at her mustc career He satd she was stngtng wtth hts orchestra but next Nlonday she was ygotnys to audttton for the Metropolttan Opera We were surprtsed to hear that she was gotne ahead wtth her mustc career stnce we remembered how fond of the boys she was tn her htgh school days We supposed she ltad marrted The lovely dtnner and entertatnment gaxe the day a perfect endtng Phyllts and I satd good by to Mary left her at her home and left for ouro s 1 ltome tn New York We had a wonderful ttrnethat dav and were happy to see and hear about all the ktds wtth whom we had gone to school . , 2 1 . , . . ' ' ' ' l . wt' On the dax of September 8 1940 frfteen happx krds entered the Frrst Grade at Lrnden Hrgeh school It was qurte anexperrence for us andthrcurh the years we have had many other excrtmg experrences Mrss Inea Stephenson was our teacher Srx of us are strll here at dear ole Lrnden We are Mae Cummrns Fred McBee Laura McBee Ethel Rrtchte Jane mabens and Slnrley Todd The other mne who comprrsed our Frrst Grade roup were Jerry Forrest Jerry Kahle and Ralph Cooprnan whom we lost to the Class of 94 Johnny Frtzwater and Roberta brnrms whom we lost to Wrngate Don Krng tothe Arr Force Marrlyn lo Lynch who now lrves rn Callfornra and Max Baker and Jrnnny lang whom we haven t heard of for some trme Before the year was over we had four more students rn our class They were Rrta Jo Van Dame George Emory Cason Carolyn Ryker and Margaret Helen boards Carolyn rs the only one we have heard of lately She rs rn llorrda but ventures back to Lrnden once rn awhtle for a vrsrt we had an art teacher from upstarrs We were gettrng brp norv bv havrn a htgh school teacher Just one week before school was out for the year J C DePlanty venturedrnto our room from Romney to stay To the Thrrd Grade we went sarlrnp Mrss Eva MCK1HS8y now Mrs Raymond Hudson was our teacher We prcked up Betty S1IllYTlOl'lSlIl th1s class Thrs year we also found out that Fred was an artrst Berne rn the Fourth Grade meant only one more year untrl we would go upstarrs Mrs Clara Gtlkey was our teacher Health tnspectron every mornrng was added to our schedule Before the year was over each one of us had acted as health rnspector We made our frrst publrc appearance Ih1S year by grvrnb a play about money at a school actrvrty W prcked up sonny Cooprnan here but lost hrm durmg our last year of school to Clarks H111 We had grown so much and now could clrmb the starrs to the Frfth Grade The Frfth and Srxth Grades had been put tn the same room the year before Mrs George Burns was our teacher We drdn t move far for the Srxth Grade just across the room For the frrst t1me we had a man teacher Mr Mosteller He taught us to play krck ball We had four teams rn our room and had real tournaments We also learned that cheatrng doesn t pay because when caueht we had to stand up rn front of the class and say that we wouldn t cheat agarn Drck Hampton was prcked up here The class was honored by havrng Jane rn the hrgh school band W . .V kt ' ' V 4' 4 , A ' y K' . ' e - . r ' ' A We felt burger now that we were gorng rnto the assembly for the Seventh Grade ThlS ear we had seven dlfferent teachers Mr Clark the sho teacher was our s onsor Y P P We had our frrst class art thts ear a werner roast out at Jane s whrch was the onl P Y Y Y class wetner roast we had been able to have without rarn Vll'glll13 Brewer Jorned us only to leave us last year to become Mrs Clyde Manges On to the Erghth Grade we went Mr Raymond Lyon was our sponsor He has remarned our farthfuland helpfulsponsor all these years We had anew subjectnow scrc lce W planned a werner roast but rt ratned so we had a wexner boll at school Before school was out those rnterested rn chorus had the opportunlty to take part rn the l-l1,,h school Chorus and to go to the Attrca Festxval whlch was even new for the Semors Mr Ross Trpton Prrncrpal helped us plan our hlth school schedule In the Nrnth Grade we were dO1H7 flne wrth onl three more ears to o untll the br E, Y Y li le nrght Our bn, party thts year was achrle supper and theater party Pat Gould and Mar aret Hawkrns jOlllCd us lh1S ear Mar aret IS stlll here but Pat went to Martrnsvxlle 2 Y S before the Junror year was over We were mterested ln makrng money for a Senrortrrp and the receptron so we prcked up corn In the Tenth Grade we strll wanted to make money so agatn we prcked up corn sold stattonary and sponsored a school carnrval Larry Payton and Lrnn Goldsmrth Jomed us just after school started rn the fall The brg party thls year was the Chrrstmas party held m Mr Lyon s room at school brnce the boys were now tntcrested rn learnrng to dance some of the grrls taught the rest of us to dance We also sponsored a htgh schoolskatmg party May 8 whrch was held at Lafayette In our Junror year we had charge of all the concesslons We enjoyed prese ntrnt our Iumor Class Play Love Is Too Much Trouble On Aprtl 12 we honored the Class of 52 at a receptton held at the Moms Bryant Hotel north ofLafayette Stnce we expressed the desire to have a drfferent type of class party Mr Cefalr our homeroom teacher volunteered to cook spaghettl for a supper and party at hrs home We also went to Mr Lyon s home for a class meetrng and party before the year was over Our last year rs here now So far we have sold Chrtstmas cards and stauonary to make money and have enjoyed a turkey supper at a Chnstmas party at Laura s We are hav mg a donkey basketball game January 30 Th weeks ahead of us before graduation are certarn to revealexpenences whxch wrll lead to many heart warmrng memorres rn years to come O .
