The meals are planned by the Home Ec. teacher, Miss Deardorff. The cooks are Mrs. Snow Beach and Mrs. Nannie Ritchie. High school girls help serve and wash dishes. This ne r project has taken a great amount of work, but is worthwhile to the many pupils who would otherwise have to eat cold lunches. Eddie and Frank Barton have a high rating as jani- tors. Many visitors compli- ment us an our clean building. In Witness Whereof, We, the Senior Class, have set our hands and seal hereto this sixteenth day of April in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty- nine. _ CLASS OF 19L? d! Jl' Witnessed by: PROPHECY FOR THE CLASS OF '49 On the night of graduation, our clas9 decided to have its first annual reunion at Linden in 1959. So on the morn- ing of April 16, 1959, we boarded a train and left for the big city of Linden. We boarded the train only to discover that Don Harpel was the conductor. Don said that he had been working for the Monon since graduation and had hit the top in no time. Since they now had taxi service in Linden, we called a cab. The cab rolled up and a cheerful voice said, Where to, folks? It was Rita Hampton in her Crosley. She owned a share in the Crosley Cab Service. She promised to show us the sights around town. First we motored down to see Don White and his Chorus Girls. V e got there at a good time because they were just rehearsing for that night's performance. From there we motored back to town. As we were driving along we passed some men who were digging ditches. Rita told us that Lavon had done real well for himself. He was foreman. After listening to our stomaches growl all morning, we decided to get a bite to eat. Rita suggested that we go to Birge's Chop Suey Parlor. Upon entering, we saw a very stringy-haired woman whom we recognized as the former Wilma Dickson. She was slaving over a steaming kettle of Chili. Poor Wilma!!!! While we were gorging, who should enter, but Dolores Oliver with her latest husband? Rita told us that she had been married fourteen times. She also said that this was a record-breaking marriage for she had been married to him for almost six months now. Dee was beginning to get old. She was nearing thirty and men were getting more scarce. We piled in the Crosley and headed back to the hotel. As we were passing the Court House, we saw a sign hanging above our heads which read, We Mend Everything Except Broken Hearts. Rita said that that was Charles Rush's office. As we buzzed up to the curb, Rita asked James to move his feet so that she could see out the rear window. As we rolled out of the Crosley, Dorothy knocked Rita's cap off. Just as we turned around and were about to enter the building, who should peddle up to us but the newsboy, Morris Smith? He parked his bike and came over to talk to us. As we were turning to leave him, we heard a sudden crash. Looking around, what should we see, but Morris standing there with a bucket on his head. We lokked up and lo! and behold! there hung Myron Deckard, gazing woefully at the bucket on Morris'head. He couldn't finish washing the windows, now. We went in and registered. Then Bud Kitsmiller, the bellhop, showed us to our tooms. After refreshing ourselves, we approached the elevator just as it was arriving. As we stepped in, who should we see but Lois Krise, who kept the elevator running all day. As we stepped out of the elevator we ran into Martha Sabens, the chambermaid. We could hardly see her for the stack of sheets, which she was carrying. After chatting awhile, we proceeded to the dining room. After being seated, we rang for a waitress. As she was ap- proaching we saw that it was Mary Hudson. She took our or- ders and left. When she placed our dinners on the table she 3Pi ied a glass of juice on Bill Reed. Mary took him to the kitchen to clean off the Juice. Returning to the table, he told us that Bob Vail was the chef in the hotel. After dinner we decided to stay for the floor show, since it was featuring Louise Allen in an Hawaiian number. She looked very cute in her costume. At the close of the show, we decided to retire for the night. The next morning, we called a cab to take us to the sta- tion. When it arrived, we saw that Rit8 was to be our chauf- feur again. We piled in and headed for the depot. Because of getting a late start, she failed to see a red light. Im- mediately we heard a shrill whistle. Looking around, we saw Willie Kindell in his neat uniform. He motioned for us to pull over to the curb. After seeing who it was he allowed us to proceed. As we pulled out of the station we realized that we had just seen the Class of ’49 in their real being 8nd that they were all successful. The band played for the Waynetown Fish Fry on the 17th of September. We received payment for our efforts. The band played at the Fall Festival at Crawfordsville on Oct. 16. There were several bands present. We marched in the rain, but we considered it worthwhile. As the year progressed the band participated in various events. They played at the Wabash-Valparaiso football game on Oct. 23; at the Linden Halloween Festival sponsored by the Lin- den Lions Club; played with the Marine Band and several other county bands on Oct. 31, and the County Tournament on Jan. 13. On Feb. 5, several band members went to Greencastle to the District Solo and Ensemble Contest. The following won first division: Bud Kitzmiller, Trumpet; Lester Rafferty, Vocal; Joan Sabens, Clarinet; Jane Sabens, Clarinet; Virginia Anthrop, Sax- ophone; Morris Smith, Trombone and Vocal; Donna Lou Todd and Patricia Miller, twirling. Feb. 19, the ones who received first place awards at the district solo and ensemble contest went to the State, and there were only four who survived with first place honors. They were Morris Smith, Vocal; Jane Sabens, Clarinet; Bud Kitzmiller, Trum- pet; and Virginie Anthrop, Saxophone. These winners will part- icipate in the All-State Contest at the Arthur Jordan Conserva- tory on March 26. The County Spring Festival was held on March 22. The Band and Chorus participated. The Annual Spring Concert was held in the school gymnasium on April 11. This was the last program that the band gave for the school yesr of 1948-1949. ANNUAL STAFF The Annual Staff, elected at the beginning of the school year consisted of Morris Smith, EdItor-in-Chief; Bud Kitsmlller Sports Editor; Martha Sabens, Society Editor; Rita Hampton, Snap- shot Editor; and Myron Deckard, Business Manager. Don White and Bob Vai! acted as Assistant Editors and were responsible for all the layouts of the yearbook. Mrs. Taylor was faculty advisor. SPORTS The baseball team had a fair year. They won 3 and lost 3 games. There were 9 seniors on the team, all of them receiving letters. Wingate won the county Championship this year by de- feating New Market in the play-off game. 3 The basketball team came through on top of the county stand- ings in both county and all games played. This makes the second year in the last three that the team has been on top. Thye have a record of 16 wins and 2 losses. They went to the final in the county tourney and were defeated by Ladoga. In the Sectional Tourney they were defeated by Waveland in the first game. Wave- land then went ahead to win the Sectional. There were 9 seniors who received sweaters this year. They SSL?7 ?? D®cka£d Lavon Vannice, Morris Smith, Don White, Don Harpel, Charles Rush, Bob Vail and Bud Kitzmiller. Bill Kindell received a sweater for Cheer Leader. During the last three years the basketbail team has won 46 and lost 8 regular season games. That is a pretty good record for this size school. Mr. Cox has been our coach for five years. Our track team just started last year and has only been in one track meet so far. That was at New Market last year. We won it by just a few points. We are going to enter the annual County Track Meet held at Wabash College in April. The Junior High Basketball team has had a good year. They have won 14 and lost 2 games.
