Bret and Bart. class history In the year of 1956, as we entered Lincolnton High School, we looked forward with enthusiasm and anticipation to the four years that lay ahead of us. During our Freshman year, although things were new to us, with the help of Beverly BeShears as our presi- dent, the year proved to be a most successful one. As the bell rang at the beginning of our Sophomore year, we realized we were a step closer to our goal. VV e were beginning to feel more at home and immediately chose Don Bumgarner to lead us. Carrying the Daisy Chain was the highlight of this year. With the able assistance of Stanley Lanier as president of the ,lunior Class, we published the Wolf, our school newspaper, pro- duced the engrossing Junior play- Don't Take My Penny, received our long-awaited class rings, and sponsored the unforget- table 'Iunior-Senior Banquet. In the summer of 1959, we sent our first Foreign Exchange student, Caroline Burgin, to Cermany. David Lynn was given the responsibility of guiding us through the most wonderful year of all. No longer must we follow upper- classmen, but with the help of Mary Ellen Henley, president of the Student Council, we have tried to set a good example for those who follow us. We have enjoyed sharing classes with Cunn- Mari Haaland of Norway, our Foreign Exchange student. The PINE BURR publication, Senior play, junior-Senior Banquet, and now, our Class Day exercises are bringing to a close the four hap- piest years of our lives. Yes, it was the day of graduation for the class of '75, but there was something elseg then I remembered, today was to be the first reunion of the class of '60-my class! And as class prophet I had been appointed to supervise the preparations for this memorable event. I hurriedly dressed and began answering the telephone calls from my wonderful classmates. Telephone operators Nancy Bivens, Pat Hines, and Dorothy Devine were keeping my line open for calls pertaining only to the reunion. My first call was from Mary Ellen Henley who, because of her executive experience, had been elected President of the Moon. She and her secretary Linda Shrum were being flown there immediately by our superduper rocketeers Paul Williams, Roger Cloninger, David Lynn, Douglas McConnell, and Cary Bollinger who were under the leadership of Captain Becky Ballard. After I had concluded that conversation the phone rang again, this time it was Worth Roberts and Darrell Keener, famous baseball stars, who, unfortunately, could not attend because of train- ing regulations. I was surprised when Darrell told me that millionaires Carl Alexander, Kenneth Barger, Alton Byers, and Michael Keener had bought the Yankees as a gift for the President of the United States Steven Ogle and Vice-President Ricky Allran. It was now time for the reunion so I ran out to my waiting taxi which was driven by Rachel Self, a renowned dragster. As we neared the school we saw policeman Jimmy Crow and police- women Shirley Painter, Peggie McAlister, and Jean Lander trying to straighten out the terrible traffic jam caused by Johnny Fitzgerald who insisted upon bringing his circus featuring Butch Hallman and his aromatic skunks, Lawrence Keever's unusual antics with porcupines, and Pat Setzer's exciting daredevil lion attraction. The meeting was to be held in the school's new student lounge, designed by world-acclaimed decorators Pat Richardson, Anne Webb, and Kay Setzer of the I-Iindustani Abstract and Foreign Company of Design. As I walked in, religious counsellors Carrie Myrick, Dottie Dean Nixon, Patricia Phillips, and Ann McConnell came over to tell me about their wonderful work and asked me if I had seen the splendid play that was given the night before in the auditorium by Hollywood stars Anwar Bedwan and Nancy Pollock. They also said that Ted Elmore, the famed radio announcer, was interviewing Anita McNeill, famous singer, and her accompanist, Steve Cates, for his vast radio audience. Then I started across the room to speak to millionaires Danny I-Iouser and Cary Willis, who were busily lighting each other's cigarettes with thousand dollar bills. In doing this, I saw David Houston and Delores Burris practicing what appeared to be wrestler's holds, but pharmacist Joel Campbell told me that they were just demonstrating new, improved chiropractic techniques. I noticed that in one corner of the room Stewart Stoudemire, a New York architect, was dis- cussing plans for a new LHS with brick-mason James Cantt and electrician Coleman Lanning. Standing nearby were their secretaries Imogene Clanton, Mozell Farmer, Sylvia Shull, Doris Litten, Kay Mosteller, and Lynda Harrison. Looking more like models than housewives were Doris McCaslin, Linda Gilbert, Anne Aber- nathy, Carol Craig, Judy Allen Cwife of that famous Air Force CeneralD, Sara Benfield, Glenda Elmore, Linda Heafner, and Martha Barkley, who were all laughing at Joyce Hallman's humor- ous stories about little John. Suddenly our attention was turned to an explosion in the cloakroom, where Alfred Mullen, an illustrious atomic scientist, was helping Cerald Ward perfect his candy bar that melts in your hand instead of your mouth. Instantly Dr. Darrell Harkey and nurses Faye Warlick, Barbara Johnson, Sandy Caskey, Lou Anne Dyson, Millie Ann Houk, and Barbara Lanning ran to give efficient first aid treatment. Fortunately neither of the boys was badly injured, however, engineers Howard Wise, Joey Sherrill, Donald Little, Jerry Caskey, and Fred Clanton were nervously testing the walls for fear of a cave-in! As I was watching the comical excitement, Sharon Houser, secretary for Eastern Union, de- livered a telegram stating that Bob Emerson and his personal secretaries,iAnn Palmer, Frances Abemethy, Charlotte Roach, -loyce Sigmon, Betty Ann Reep, Judy Shelton, and Brenda Lawing, had been detained by an act of Congress. Bobby was being prosecuted for aiding and abetting Keith Turner in his efforts to rig television programs. Obviously, Keith and his other accomplices, Leon Freeman and Jerry Houser, had been Hunavoidably detained, also. Standing around the refreshment table were Larry Casper Cornwell, Oneta Bell, Ann Hovik, Libby Shuford, Beth Heavner, and james Duckworth, conscientious teachers who were enjoying the exchange of new educational theories. There was a bustle of excitement as some more of our wonderful group arrived. One of the new arrivals was Linda Harrill, the first woman basketball coach at the University of North Carolina. Linda along with her very capable staff consisting of Sue Howard, Dewitt Proctor, Ronnie Dedmond, and Richard Ledford was doing a marvelous job. Another group of late-comers were Sandy Saine, Keith Whitesides, Robby Goodson, Wayne Gilbert, Jerry White, and Allan Freeman. These hard working accountants had gone into busi- ness together and had developed a new bookkeeping system which enabled them to do away with books and use only system. You figure it out! They were soon followed by their equally confused secretaries, Charlotte Michael, Ann -Devine, Martha Goodson, ludy Goodson, Alta Bentley, Bar- bara Hollifield, Linda Davis, Alice McSwain, and Charlotte Seagle. Stanley Lanier stopped attempting to invent square pegs to fit in round holes long enough to tell me that Freddie Barkley, a diplomatic engineering scientist in Germany, was not able to be present because Mechanic james Grigg needed more time to complete repairs on Freddie's rocket ship. Standing by the purple, orange, and burnt umber mural, donated by celebrated commercial artists, Deane Ellis and Peggie Beal, were Admiral Ray Ritchie, General Ken Hord, head of Annapolis, West Point and the Air Force Academy respectively. These esteemed gentlemen were in the midst of a heated argument over Darrell Little, since all three desired him as their head football coach. Not wishing to become involved, I turned to find nurses Anne McGinnis, Margaret Finger, Anne Whitesides, Delphia Kiser, judy Hager, and Rachel Chapman, who were exchanging ex- citing experiences with air-line hostesses Sharon Hovis, Patsy Parker, and Kay Davis. These three were employed by Sidney Eurey, President of Eastern Airlines. Near one of the many ultra-modern tables was Bert Allen, that noted Arctic mining engineer, displaying his unusual silica. Watching with interest and anticipation were engineers Steve Burris, johnny Hyder, and mechanic Johnny Reel. As I excused myself to talk with Linda Hallman about her work in Morganton with the re- tarded children, Annette Shuford, who has been studying at the Sorbonne, ran over to tell me of her exciting experiences. She also regretfully told me that Gunn-Mari Haaland, our unforgettable exchange student, was unable to be present. Gunn-Mari, who is teaching English, German, and ri-encn in one of Norway's largest universities, was in the midst of summer sessions. While Annette and I were discussing our wonderful times at L.H.S., we noticed that secre- taries Wanda Caldwell, Emily McSwain, Carolyn Coffey, Jean Hoyle, Phyllis Abernathy, Kay Helton, and Linda Setzer were listening intently to architects Ray Costner and Frank Duncan, who were describing their plans for a new commercial school to be built in Lincolnton. Here I might add that another new building in town is the Warlick-Hilton Hotel where all our alumni are staying, courtesy of its decorator, Mollie Goldsmith. It was now time for the graduating ceremonies, and everyone began streaming into the audi- torium. Standing there watching my friends, I thought of this same day fifteen years ago when we made our farewell appearance at L.H.S. I was filled with nostalgia as I thought of those ng but always happy, years that we spent together. Most of my classmates had realized their dreams, but somehow my schemes had gone astray. Wearily walking back to the head janitor's office, I pondered the instructions that I would give my aides, Avery Newton and Roger johnson, about cleaning the auditorium after commencement. four, sometimes frustrati JANTTRESS CAROLINE BURGIN, Class Prophet ww 1 mx R s 1 ,Q- 7 J .vff 2f'f?fB'35 29' 7225 ' Mm YHQQ 2-Im WEEK! .1-'Z'-L' My--A., AL, .
