BILL BOYD, Attempt-at-Law Wtrmzssrssz Toluca Hoyle Charley Gantt Page Ninety one CLASS PROPHECY Good aftemoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is your on-the-spot reporter from Station WXYZ in Raleigh. On this beautiful Indian summer day, we are privileged to be in Lincolnton, North Carolina, for the opening ceremonies of the new Lincolnton High School, acclaimed the most modem institution of secondary learning in the United States. It is indeed an honor for me to be able to bring you this news coverage as I was a member of the graduating class of 1959 which began the fund for this magnificent structure. The manager of the Seagle-Hilton Hotel here in Lincolnton, Larry Seagle, has invited all the members of this class for a week's stay at the hotel to help celebrate this momentous occasion. For my radio audience I have a few facts about this new school which may be of some interest to them. This ultra-modem structure was designed by Donald Peeler and was con- structed by David Lohr and Sons' Construction Company. Its eighty-four classrooms, sea-green in color with contrasting brown tile floors, have the very latest in school equipment.VThe interior decoration was done by Julia.Miller of New York City, and Dale Norman, co-owner with David Wright of the David-Dale Paint Store, donated the paint for the entire building. I under- stand that Nancy Smith helped Miss Miller with the interior decoration and that the tile was laid by Joe Rhodes and his capable staff, Charles Lineberger, Coleman Lanning, Lawrence Del- linger, afnd Roger Chapman. The infirmary, for the convenience of those who become ill while at school, is done, of course, in antiseptic white. Kay Beattie, RN, will be on duty at all times to help those students who are too sick to attend class. Kay, who studied at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Ma'ry- land, told me that she received her nursing instruction from Sara Jane Duncan, now Head Supervisor at the hospital. I feel sure that Dr. David Heavner and Dr. Charlotte Shuford, along with Nurses Ruby Beaver, Janice Lee Coffey, Janice Dellinger, Dianne Hager, Mary Ruth Keener, Margaret Robinson, and Jeanne Shrum, are anxious to inspect this new feature of Lincolnton High School and pass their professional opinion on the equipment. The Students' Lounge was designed with the interests of the students at heart. Comfortable couches and chairs, purchased from the Eric Johnson Fumiture Company, are scattered about the spacious room. A snack bar complete with coke fountain can be found along one entire wall. This unit was a gift of David Poovey, President of the Coca-Cola Company. Jerry Elmore re- membered his old Alma Mater with a jul-te box, which stands in one comer of the lounge. Jerry, now a concert pianist at Carnegie Hall, flew down rrom New York especially for the Dedication Ceremonies. Rev. Don Heafner, Chaplain of the Unitd States Senate, and Speaker of the House Dick Keever also arrived on the same flight. Their plane, by the way, was piloted by Steve Toe Gantt with Jenny Crowell as Chief Stewardess. Alene Aderholt, Billie Hoffman, Libby Hoke, Zellie Lee McCorkle, and Jo Ann Reynolds are stewardesses with the same air line as Jenny, bfut are on flights all over the world and are unable to be here today. I can see by my watch that it is almost time for the Dedication Ceremonies to begin. The Su- perintendent of City Schools, Darrel H. Carpenter, Jr., has asked Principal Marvin House, formerly head of the Physics Department at the University of Pumpkin Center, to open officially the school with a few words in a brief ceremony which will be of interest to all. The crowd here today for this memorable occasion is tremendous. I see many familiar faces among the throngs of people-faces of my classmates of '59 that I shall never forget. Gathered under the shady trees which characterize the campus of L.H.S. are housewives Mary Sue Avery, Carolyn Canipe, Jean Philyaw, Jo Anne Linberger Gee, Saundra McAlister, Judy Rudisill Harrison, Nina Mae Saunders Martin, Doris Dellinger Self, Ella Mae Setzer, Amy Seagle Tate, Janette Carpenter, Joan Thornburg, Wanda Wallace, Dottie Kiser Caldwell, and Martha McMurry Fox. All seem to be talking a mile a minute about something, I imagine they are discussing their children, homes, husbands, etc .... and, of course, gossiping! As teachers are always interested in the progress of education, I see we have a number of them with us today. Nancy Chaffin and Jane Page, home economics teachers, are busy discussing the merits of the Home Economics Department while the other teachers, Becky Collins, Mary Jane Crowell, Sarah Huss, Philip Herman, Barry Lockman, Ruth Armstrong, Linda Lineberger, and Iotha Ray, seem to be speechless about the convenience of the school. Coach Rex Stuart, t-lead of the Physical Education Department, and his assistants, Bobby Lineberger and Barron Lee, as so proud of the new equipment in the department that they cannot keep silent about it. Millionaires Joe Elmore, Dick Kuhlhoff, Larry Finger, Larry Goodson, Jerry Dysart, Frank Hines, Robert Ingle, Larry Leonard, and Harry Bugs Price, are listening intently to Coach Stuart tell of the many games he is sure to win because he has such modern practice equipment. We wish him the best of luck. Ladies and gentlemen of the radio audience, my assistant, Mina Ross, has just handed me an important news bulletin which I shall pass directly on to you! Pete Childers and Jim Touhy have landed on the moon! I am sure all of you listening realize the importance of this announce- ment as man has been trying to land on the moon since 1959, and the task has finally been accomplished by these two great aces of space from Lincolnton, Childers and Touhy. However, we must give some credit to the men behind the scenes. This feat could not have taken place without the mathematical minds of. Dr. Judy McCrary and her coworker, Professor Bill Boyd, on the job. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their long, hard hours of labor on this project. Mechanics Steve Caldwell, Richard Lloyd, Thomas Huss, Eddie Lowe, N . C. Huss, Dale Ritchie, Harry VVhitener, Bobby Rudisill, and Harold Keener are also to be thanked for their splendid job of assembling the space ship which carried the two brave souls to the moon. If any further news comes in over our teletype machine, operated by Tommy Coffey and Blair Devine, I shall certainly pass it on to you. I can see that service men are here in full force for the big day. Some of the faces I recognize are All Wayne Hallman, All Ken Hordg Sergeant Jackie Liner, USMC, Captain Wayne Shu- ford, USAFQ Lieutenant Elliott Whitesides, United States Army, and Major Charles Hoke, USMC. All of these men are making the service their careers, and we are proud of them. Secretaries Emma Avery, Jewell Beal, Katherine Byers, Clara Clippard, Linda Sue Cloninger, Delores Floyd. Nancy Grant, Daphine Hager, Pat Hawkins, Wanda Hoyle, Mary Keough, Linda Miller, Aletha Moody, Peggy Jean Nantz, Patricia Pendleton, Wanda Richard, Shirley Saine, Sue Schronce, Sarah Seehorn, Rebecca Ann Smith, Sandra Keener and Barbara Sue Gilbert are all anxious to inspect the Commercial Department which is now under the supervision of Lynda Dedmon. For some reason, typewriters have an endless fascination for secretaries, and they cannot wait to try out the modern electric machines in the typing rooms. Susan Ramsaur, first flutist in the Lawrence Welk Band, and Patricia Chapman, accompanist for the Girls' Glee Club at L.H.S., are huddled next to one corner of the building talking about -you guessed it, music! I was talking with them about thirty minutes ago, and they filled me in on the occupations of some of my classmates which I have not seen in many years. Yvonne Goodson and Betty Beal are psychologists at the Mayo Clinic, Lynda Porter now buys clothes for Montaldo's, and Brenda Kay Shull and Jane Ann Wilkinson are Directors of Religious Education at churches in Virginia. Susan told me that Jan Ballard performed on the Lawrence Welk Show last week and was a smashing success. I also learned that one of my old buddies, Diane Tutherow, is now a missionary in darkest Africa. Diane always wanted to be a missionary, and I am happy to learn that her dreams have been fulfilled. Several of the girls in my old class, Joyce Anderson, Peggy Kiser, Doris Jean McCorkle, Faye Crump Ross, and Nancy Woodward, are telephone operators and have given me further informa- tion about some of our classmates. Telephone operators seem to know everything! They said that Linda Lowe, Linda McGee, Rosie .Norville, Dorothy Rhodes, and Betty Wooley, have realized their ambitions to be beauticians and are now working in and around Lincolnton. I must remember to recommend them to some of my friends. I see that Detectives Gene Carpenter and Billy Ballard are talking to the school Ground Main- tenance Workers Jerry and Terry Cline about the burglar alarm system which has just been installed in the new school. Stock-car racers Bill Eurey and Stacy Darriell Keever also seem to be interested in th-e conversation. Dr. Don VVhisonant, a local dentist, is talking earnestly with Dr. Inger Saether, also a dentist, about the condition of teeth in Norway. Dr. Saether was a foreign exchange student in our school in '59, and I feel sure that she is over-joyed to be seeing some of her many friends here in America again. There is an old saying that birds of a feather flock together, and I am sure now that it must be true as I see accountants Ricky Cronland, James Lockman, John Moore, Penny Mundy, Rodney Warren, Jerry Noles, and George Smith standing together talking over old times. It is now time for the Dedication Ceremonies to begin as I see Principal House mounting the platform. Principal House speaks: Friends and fellow-classmates of '59, I am happy to welcome you here today for this great occasion. I wish to dedicate this new school building to the betterment of education and to you, the Class of 1959. Now, without further ado, let us all enter the new classrooms and inspect the wonders of modem leaming. - As I watch my classmates march single-file into the building, my mind returns to that day so long ago when we marched in single-file down the aisle in our caps and gowns to be graduated. All of us have come a long and, I hope, a happy way from that day. We can never again retrace our steps to our care-free youth and live again those wonderful months. Perhaps the class enter- ing the school on this day can re-live those days for us, and we may see ourselves in their years in high school. Now this is your on-the-spot reporter returning you to Station VVXYZ in Raleigh. PAT DELLINGER, Class Prophet. Page Ninetyafour CLASS HISTCRY Undoubtedly each senior will cherish certain impressions and fond remembrances of his four years at Lincolnton High School, but lest in time to come, old age ravages our storehouse of memories, let us cite here and now in black and white the highlights of these glorious davs. Remember the helpless feeling we experienced as Ugreenn freshmen? Everything was shockingly new to us then-we didn't even know the location of the library. But we soon enough found our way with the assistance of those wonderful upperclassmen in whose footsteps we eagerly pursued recognition. How embarrassed we were at the Latin Initiation, but oh how pleased we were to receive our membership pins! Nor will we ever forget our studies in the realm of science that year, not to speak of all the pop tests. As sophomores we had a big laugh when we saw the incoming fresh- men and wondered if we had looked so young and frightened. Begin- ning at last to feel ourselves a real part of Lincolnton High School, we endeavored to do our share to lift the cherished school spirit. Many of our number tried athletics and debates, and the rest of us cheered them on. The climax of this year was carrying the daisy chain at the May Day exercises. We were constantly reminded during our Junior year that we must then decide on our goals for future life and strive toward them. There was never a dull moment that yearl Ours was the responsibility of printing the Ufolfg the joy of receiving Class Ringsg the task of pre- paring United States History outlines, the privilege of presenting the Junior Play: and the honor of planning the junior-Senior Prom. Our final step toward graduation was taken solemnly, for with the title, Senior, also went the duty of leadership. We tried in every way to break previous records-many times succeeding, yet sometimes fail- ing. To add to our list of firsts, we were proud to have started a suc- cessful foreign exchange program. Chapel took on a new meaning, for Don Heafner, the Student Council President, instilled in us the desire to have a finer, more religious institution. The PINE BURR publication, the Senior Play, the various clubs, and the 'Iunior-Senior made our year complete. So let us conclude this sketchy, incomplete history- but what member of the Class of '59 cannot read between the lines into the true history of our four years at Lincolnton High School!
