It is the 3964. and this seeker of past civilization shoots from a highly developed region of another planet to the dark' world. By chance it drops to a rolling section of land not far from a shore and a range of mountains. The explorers climb from this miracle and instantly notice the ruins of an old structure which they decide must be brick. Their zeal is so aroused that they seek eagerly for other facts. When one excitedly shows a book of records, they turn on their machine which reveals the past. It first shows a group of pupils entering a building, l-incolnton High School. for education in 1942. The enthusiastic adventurers hold the scene to study the expression of these youths. Some show fear, others anxiety, confusion. eagerness, or boredom. But eventually they are organized with Janice McLean as their president, As classes of history. English. and mathematics continue day after day, most of the expressions are disgust or fear of grades. Well pleased. the strangers continue to watch the pupils try to make themselves a part of the school. Many pupils advance a step toward the top with Bobby Turner heading the class as the president. This year they march proudly down the aisle carrying the traditional daisy chain for the beloved seniors. The explorers discover that under ordinarv circumstances there would not have been a Junior class in 19-15, because of the new eighth grade which the State Department of Education put into effect in 1942. However, there is a small group which has been increased bv some others who have taken enough work to be considered Juniors, Thus a class of Quality rather than quantity under the leadership of Buddy Connor sail proudly ahead toward their Senior vear. The highlight of this year is a formal Junior-Senior banquet which is served by the Parent-Teacher Association, The days of the Senior year End the students working hard to reach the long sought goal with Jack Dellinger to direct them. They have to choose their Senior play. select invitations, sponsor the Fall Carnival. publish their Annual and perform countless other tasks. They have diflicult times together but also many happy times. As the strange visitors find the 1946 PINE BURR Annual, they are surprised to find the class history. and they wonder whv. with such able and promising leadership, this building they are visiting should be in ruins. I see no reason why this should happen either. so 1et's forget such possibilities and go forward to make real history. BETTY CONNFR, Historicm Page Fifteen
