CLASS PROPI-IECY On a quiet evening in the year 1955, I wandered into a lovely glen. In the middle of this glen was nestled a well of clear, crystal Water. Suddenly, it dawned upon me that according to tradition, this was an old wishing well and anyone going there might see the faces of those they longed for most. A desire to see all my classmates overwhelmed me. So I sat on a moss-covered stone and gazed into the clear, cool water. Suddenly. there appeared before me The RhodesfSigmon General Hospital with no other than Peggy Martin Rhodes and Jim Sigmon as physicians. Betty Sue Quinton was Super- intendent of Nurses with Lois Brackett. Mary I-Ieavner, 'I helma Self, and Maxine Heafner as her able assistants. Bobby Jean Padgett was a laboratory technician in the same hospital. As I looked again, I saw Bill Eaker. a famous lawyer, and Bobby Jean Hoyle, his private secretary. The next scene was a large passenger plane about to take off. Much to my surprise, Harold Ford was pilot, Charles Warren, cofpilot, and Anna Morrison, air hostessf Bobby Riser was among the passengers, The next picture was a ball field. where I saw Vernon Schrum, Ralph Carpenter, and Garland Hudspeth playing professional football. Who should be the team's coach but Oscar Elmore with John Weaver Assistant? As this picture faded from view and the waters cleared, whom should I see but Betty McLean. I-Iarrie Lee Lowe. Bonnie Devine. and Avaneal Shuford modeling for a large depart- ment store? Before me next was a theatre managed by Bill Connor and Joe Hipp. Much to my surprise, Lavinia Burris, Ann Davis. liaye Houser, Carl Starr, and Bill McCoy were on the stage. Daphine Wise and Mildred Smith were selling tickets in the box office and Laura Wehunt was the operators secretary. There suddenly arose before me an opera house, where I saw Carolyn Roper among the vocalists and Shelley Roper, Louise Warlick, and Janette McGinnis among the accompanists. I saw Betty Carol McAllister, Virginia Shuford, and Wilma Jean Dellinger, members of a large high school faculty in North Carolina. Sue Ewing was basketball coach at the same school. . The scene following showed Peggy Ann Costner, pharmacist: Bennie Cochrane, owner of a furniture factory: Donald Hovis. owner of a grocery store: Jack Harris. head of the fire department: Dicky Burris, owner of a furniture store: Donald McGinnis, filling station operator, and Betha Houser, Andy Caskey, and Ryan Shelton, successful farmers. Appearing next 'was a government building where I saw Yvonne Bumgardner, Nell Morton, Aileen Huss, and Margaret Reep going about their stenographic duties. At an airbase. I saw Louis Cobb, Lathan Summey, and Johnny Robinson as pilots. But surprise of surprises, there were Lizzie Belle Beaver, lirances Rayle. and Betty Hovis, busy housewives, hurrying to market! Next, I saw Charles Croodson managing a chewing gum factory, How this reminded me of the days when he chewed gum in schoolf The next picture revealed a bank where I saw John Stamey, president, and Bill Yoder. vice-president. Wayne McAllister and lirank Rudisill were tellers. Helen Goodson and Millie Mullen were clerks here also. A passenger train passed across the scene and Charles Randall was the conductor. Christine Cash was a hostess on this train. In a large munitions factory I saw Dewey Abernethy, James Cooper. Gene Vxfilson. Vernon I-Iauss, and Sammy I-Iuss as expert mechanics. The next scene showed W. A. Abernathy. being sworn in as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by Chief Justice Kemp Nixon. Among those present were Claude Gilbert, Jack Carswell, Billy Keever, and I-Ierbert Lester, government officials, Patil Kiser. reporter of a prominent newspaper, was there also. As the next picture rose before me, I saw Betty Sue Iflmore, Ruth Lemmond, and Madeline Saine as successful business women operating an exclusive dress shop. As I looked again, I saw a If B. I. building where I.ee Carpenter. Doyle Bynum, and Thomas Rash were special agents. Conette Byers and Mary Nell Shidal were stenographers here, The scene following showed Eleanor Turner, art teacher: Celia Pickens. dean of music: John Ramsaur, physical director of boys: and Winnie Reynolds, physical director of girls, of Duke University. A radio station appeared, where I saw Fred Huffstetler, announcerg Jack Harwell. comedian: and Jack I-Ielms, leader of the Smoky Mountain Boys. Vance Avery was operating the tele- vision machines of N. B. C. I was really surprised when I saw Missi Jonas, president of the National Matrimonial Bureau. As I looked into the waters again, I could see no more for the water was very dull. But why should I worry? I have finished the prophecy of the class of 1045.
