Slowly the dim recollections are revealing themselves and now our first thoughts picture us as an enthusiastic and earnest body of Freshmen-one hundred and ninety-eight in number-timidly, but steadily entering upon our high school career. Barbara Shrum was chosen as our Freshman leader. As our Freshman recollections fade away we pass across the threshold of Sophdom. Now we are not quite as green and are no longer frightened. This year we had the fun of carrying the daisy chain. The Student Government Organization was running smoothly now and the year proved to be a most prosperous one. Our junior year is characterized by that ever-abiding atmosphere of jollity. This was a year of fun as well as study. We were now approaching what we had been looking forward to for a long time-the Junior-Senior banquet. With hard work from the stu- dents and teachers our banquet was a success. We also had fun publishing the school paper, running for Student Government offices and selecting our rings. Some of our members engaged in hard-fought and thrilling conflicts upon the athletic field and others excelled in book work. At last. we have come to the last of our happy days spent at L. H. S. As seniors we were busy electing officers, selecting invita- tions and publishing our annual. Joe Henry Hoffman, Martha Moore. J. M. Broome and Billy Lander were chosen as our Senior leaders. Now, we are facing a future of unrest. wonderment. and uneasi- ness as to how our ship may reach the shore of achievement. As we leave L. l-l. S. we are confident that our lives will prove a symbol of success and honor to our parents. school. and fellow classmates we are leaving behind us. Surf Bezxrriu. Historian. l'r1rli' Iiitwnlif SENIDR CLASS PRDPHECY As I sit before a big, open fire, while the wind outside is blowing, I pick up my newspaper to read. The date is November l8, 1953. Am I seeing things? But no. I'm not: Joe Henry Hoffman is managing editor of this paper, and his assistant is Jack Dellinger. It all comes back to me now. They were in the Senior Class of I9-I3 with me. I often wonder where they are and what they are doing. The article which appears before my eyes is: Dr. Ray Reinhardt and Miss Kitty Miller. laboratory technician, aid in opening a large hospital in a nearby town. After reading farther, I find that Joe Rhyne is going to be an interne at the same hospital. and Miss Martha Moore is superintendent of nurses. The list of nurses includes Letha Martin, Ardis Childs, Betty Cashion. and Betty Jean Kistler. Barbara Schrum's picture stands out on the next page. Why. it is adver- tising the work of James Knuckles, owner and manager of Knuckles' Studio. At first I thought maybe she had been offered a movie contract. On the next page, I read that Frances Bandy is sailing for Africa, where she'll be a missionary: Julia McLurd for England. where she will be a gov- erness: and Ray Hoffman for some unknown country to visit his great uncle of noble birth, of whom he has never heard. As I glance through the paper, I see that owner Charles Hobbs announces that Sue Beattie and Jack Yoder are playing in Once and For All at the Decade Theatre. Betty Hunter Glenn and Pansy Drum are playing in the same picture. We hear that Flossie Auton sells tickets there. Oh looki T. C. Seagle, Jr., is running for mayor. What a surprisef The honorable Lee Elmore has recently been made a judge of the Superior Court? Heres the music page. I quote from one article: Bernice Leonard. by far the season's most outstanding lyric soprano, will sing the title role of the opera Benson tomorrow night at the Metropolitan. I'm so glad? And. oh yes, Helen Stamey and Marion Lippard. concert pianists, are to be the featured guests. and will be allowed to play. The Fix-Em-Up Beauty Salon, owned and operated by Ruth Smith and Lois Rudisill, will have the famous make-up artist, Carolyn Buff. with them next week. Hazel Eurey is their manicurist. We also see that Meldrum Winstead and his Band are going to play at the Country Club tomorrow night. The band included Billy Lander, Dodson Barineau, Gene Carpenter, and L. A. Abernethy. Wade Dodgen is now a wealthy banker. His stenographer is Vashti Hallman. Fred Jarrett is a cotton broker, and Harry Mullis is going to make his solo flight soon. Jean Robinson is painting a magazine cover. Her artist model is Jean Craig. If you're hungry, Frank X-Xbernethy owns a cafe just around the corner. and Winnie Leonard operates a tea room. J. M. Broome, highway constructor, Bobby Deal. architect, and Buster Knight. engineer, are working together on a project. On the Society page, we read that Mary Jane Robinson entertained the X Y Z Club yesterday afternoon. Those present were: 'Dorothy and Betty Stamey, Mary Dell Lewis. Joyce Robinson, Margaret Taylor, and Mary Lee Byers. The present, Louise Link, presided. J. C. Buff is touring the West on a Greyhound bus driven by R. A. Heavner. Lorene Payseur and her husband, a football coach, are on the same bus. I fold my paper. Why go on? Most of my classmates are accounted for. Now that I know where they are and what they are doing, I will get my beauty sleep, leaving the ghost of memories to play hide-and-seek with the flickering Ere-light. I NIs1,L11Q Kwucicriis.
