SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Icy winter wind madly shook the windows of my living room. daring me to come out. But the Hre gaily crackling on the hearth politely and warmly invited me to remain indoors. Since my favorite chair shared the same sentiment and because the day had been a busy one at the office, I sat down gladly. Auto- matically I picked up a newspaper. For variety I had bought one I had never read before. The date was January lO, 1950. Oh? Am I seeing things? But no, I'm not: John Heavner is managing editor of this paper. Suddenly thoughts of the Senior Class of I9-I0 flood my mind. Vw'here are they? Wlaat are they doing? And most important, are they happy? The headlines scream in bold type that a cure for cancer has been found, Dr. Walton Boring, with the aid of Miss Charlotte Ramsaur, laboratory technician, are the discoverers. Farther along in the article I note that Allen Bandy is an interne in the same hospital. Miss Katherine Moore is the superin- tendent of nurses. Two of those listed I know: Bessie Benfield and Martha Hoffman. I recognize Yvonne Reinhardt's picture on the right side of the page. She has been declared this seasons most glamorous debutante. Our national defense has been strengthened, declares an important article: Edwin Keever has invented a new gas that only paralyzes people for Z4 hours- avoiding death and allowing us to take prisoners in case of war. A new army bomber is to be tried out tomorrow by a daring test pilot. Ifrnest Kiger. Speaking of aviation, I see in this TVA advertisement that Isabel Hipp is an air hostess. On the next page I read that Margaret Cloninger is sailing for Africa where she'll be a missionary: Gertrude Seagle for England, where she'll be a governess: and Helen Hauss for the same country, where she will visit her uncle of noble birth. and be presented at the Court of St. James. Betty Link and her wealthy husband are sailing for a honeymoon in Hawaii. What's this? Wlay. Frances Bridges, who won the State Beauty Contest has been offered a movie contract. Oh. speaking of the movies here I see that Chris- tine Grayson is playing the lead in the film version of the year's best seller, written by the famous author, Edna Carpenter. Richard Robinson is also play- ing in the same picture. And did you know that Hilda Heafner, actress of the stage, is beginning her third big year on Broadway in Dreams Came True ? Oh look? Bobbie Lander is running for mayor. Surprise of surprises? The Honorable Harry B. Mauney has recently been made a judge of the Superior Courtf Here's the music page. I quote from one article: Mary Lillian Jonas, by far this season's most outstanding lyric soprano, will sing the title role of the opera 'Carmen' tomorrow night at the Metropolitan. I'm so gladf And, oh yes. Margaret Anna Winsteacl. and Jimmy Navey, concert pianists, are to be the guests of Paderewski, and will be allowed to play for him. Here's a comment on the quality of Claudia Carpenter's voice. Harold Caldwell is comedian on the same radio program. Pink Tolbert is the announcer. Harold Lohr leads the famous swing band. Time: Cast : Plot: Time : Cast: Plot: Time : Cast: Plot: Time 1 Cast: Plot: ACT 1 September, 1936. through May. 1937. The leading characters, P. C. Costner, Pink Tolbert. Margaret Nance, and 1-larrilce Coodson, are supported by a group of 181 'fextrasf' The actors are standing on the stage waiting for the curtain to rise. Suddenly--the curtains rises. They are blinded by the bright lights, and quake with stage fright. Some have a hard time filling their parts. but they struggle on. But as a whole, the first act is a success, considering the lack of experience of the actors. ACT II September, 1937, through May, 1938. P. C. Costner, Julia Claire Thorne, Mary Ruth Weaxfer. and Charlotte Ramsaur lead the 130 members of the cast. By now, the group of actors feel quiet full of talent and experience. As the curtain is raised, they are filled with self-confidence. But alas? they have a hard to please audience. Mr. Latin and Miss Algebra seem to be quite unmoved by this wonderful array of talent displayed before them. However. the actors refuse to lose their self-confidence, and they end another successful act. ACT III September. 1938, through May. 1939. A The llO members are led in this act by Margaret Anna Winstead, Johnathan Rhyne, Claudia Carpenter, and Elizabeth Schrum. This act is very exciting because it is filled with action. The publishing of the school paper fills a very important part. But the climax of this act is the Junior'Senior Banquet. which is given in honor of those noted actors-the Seniors. As the curtain falls, the cast begins to look forward to the last and most important act. ACT IV September, 1939, through May, 19-IO. The stars are Johnathan Rhyne, Mary Lillian Jonas, Evelyn Garrison and Charles Corriher, and the supporting cast numbers 87. The climax of the play has finally arrived. The actors have now over- come all stage fright. and they are filled with the experience gained in the first three acts. As the curtain is about to fall, the actors receive diplomas as rewards for their excellent acting. SE IOR CLASS PROPHECY Bradshaw's Beauty Salon. owned and operated by Gladys and Ruth Brad- shaw will have the famous make-up artist, Ruth Childers, with them next week. Madge Shrum is their manicurist. Oh, I'm getting homesick for North Carolina. Didn't anyone stay there? Oh yes, Evelyn Garrison is Dean of Women at the Vw'oman's College of the University of North Carolina. I want to know what's going on in Lincolnton. Don Hipp and 'Robert Hovis, two successful farmers, have taken Hrst prizes at the State Fair with their livestock. Mary Frances Buff is Girl Scout Leader there. Tom Bost is a dentist. Why here's a write-up on our own dear Lincolnton High School. Frances Wood is Librarian now. Mary Abernethy teaches Senior Ifnglish: Frances Brackett, Latin: Agnes McAllister, Home Economics: and James Fortenberry is Coach. A very promising Glee Club is under the direction of Margaret Cochrane. Charles Corriher is now a wealthy banker. His stenographer is Dlivia Rudisill. Harold Schrum is a cotton broker. His secretary is Lorene Huss. Here's a picture of Vivian Kistler, who is famous now because she has married a very well-known official in our United States Government. She is pictured buying a hat in Virginia at Emma l-ee Harrill's Shoppe. Julia Alyce Hoover is painting a magazine cover. Her artist model is Elizabeth Schrum. A murder mystery has just been solved by Detective James Williams and Chief of Police Conrad Seagle. The lawyer for the case was Jerry Tilson. who was skillfully aided by Mary Ruth Weaver, his secretary. Claude Warren. County deputy sheriff, was commended for his fine work on the case. Margaret Warlick covered the story for this newspaper. If you're hungry, John Houser owns a cafe-just around the corner and Thelma Ledford operates a tea room. Rachel Carpenter is touring the West on a Greyhound bus driven by Julius Sherrill. Lola Kate Van Story and her husband, a football coach. are on the same bus. Fred Eaker, highway constructor. Wilson Goodson. architect, and Harold Hallman. engineer. are working together on a project. Hollis Henderson, sports writer, has just interviewed Frank Heafner, coach at Duke, and Dwight Lockman. coach at the University of North Carolina. He also wrote about a famous golfer. Richard Goodson. Tommy Houser is now a minister. Johnathan Rhyne out-did us all by becoming president of the land of the free, and the home of the brave. I fold my paper. Why go on? All of my classmates are accounted for. Now I know where they are and what they are doing. I'm content because each is happy. I suddenly remember that the next day will be a busy one at the oflice, for I have at last realized my ambition, and am a designer.
