We were a sturdy crew-those who were enjoying our first year. Our crew was stationed on the first deck. We were bound for that well-known harbor Diploma. Cur crew were about nfty strong and eager for new adventures. Our captain was Sully Lawing. who was replaced by Bessie Hall when he chose another destination. Qur first mate was Elizabeth Hoyle. We sailed through rough waters but nnally braved the sea, At the end of about a year's sailing. we reached a small harbor. Sophomoria. We stayed there until the next fall when we should appoint new leaders and plan new ideas for the coming year. ln the fall of l9Z5 we set off with renewed vigor, bound for that place known as Junioria. Qur captain was Melvin Karesh with Mary Erances Padgett and Emily Hunter as nrst and second mates. Gradually we were rising. Qur abode was now the second deck. Our crew had diminished, but in spite of that we started with full sail.' The winds, on the whole, were favorable and without much difficulty we reached our next port. We stayed here waiting for next fall. By the time everything was in readiness for departure, we were willing to meet anything coming our way. We were now Juniors and inhabited the third deck. Everyone held in mind the one main event-the Junior-Senior reception. Our captain was Page '1.LL'L'!7fU'f7I'!7l Melvin Karesh with Bessie Hall and Emily Hunter, the first and second mates. On the way over. some of our crew boarded small boats and left for unknown places, and some became seasick and fell overboard. Doggedly we sailed onward with full sail ahead. Time drew nigh for the reception and, as one, we plunged whole-hearted into this new project. It was to be held in Elizabeth Holyle's state- room and apartment on the ship. After we spent some time mak- ing money, the reception took place. The Seniors condescended to come down from the fourth deck to join us. Much pep and enf thusiasm were in the evenings entertainment and everyone left joy- ous and light-hearted. Soon afterwards we reached port and dis- embarked with heads high, and eager for the coming year when we could at last have something to say and say it freely. The old ship was lying in the harbor and with a rush we boarded her in 1927. Immediately we took our place on the fourth deck and dared anyone to move us. Here. we overlooked the low- lying lands and the lower decks. Melvin Karesh was again our cap- tain. Sanders Guignard and Marjorie Kate Abernethy being our first and second mates. Several dropped out but those left were de- termined to keep up the old fight. On the way across, we published our log. THE PINE BURR, a record to remind us of our days on the ship. As our destination grew nigh, we regretted it. Even though we had talked of how good it would be to disembark from that ship Education. everyone had in his heart a deep sorrow, that of one who has lost a beloved object, never to obtain it again. And so. with bowed heads, we left the ship after Diploma had been reached, de- parting to places unknown, each seeking to set a standard for the world and to show our dear old ship appreciation for what she had done for us. However. it was successful more from a sportsmanship standpoint than from a won and lost percentage. because both in victory and defeat the team was always that same fighting band of wolves. and was always upholding the standard of a clean. fair brand of football. The whole team should be commended for the way they fought as a single unit and for their never say die spirit. Captain Rudisill proved to be an excellent leader on the lime-striped arena. because his neverfending light was an inspiration to his team-mates. Leonard. needless to say. truly deserved the gold football awarded to him by his team-mates for his fighting spirit and his valuable serv- ices as a member of the squad. Coach Smith again proved his prowess as a leader as well as a coach by the masterful manner in which he led his team through the most trying of football campaigns. ln basketball, as in football, the team was always supreme in lighting spirit. though lacking the punch to win the maiority of its games. Coach Smith and his cagers closed the season at the State Tournament at Raleigh. but there they failed to equal the impressive record made by the Wolves of l0Z7. Captain Beam. at center. was the nucleus of the team's scoring power for the season. while Combs. at guard. was the bright light of l.incolnton's defensive game. The girls' team under Miss Hoke also had a stormy campaign but in spite of their hard luck along with their comparative small size they gave the enemy plenty of furious opposition, Vvfith their peppy little captain, Hunter. leading the charge. l.incolnton stayed in the thick of the ngbt. Boxing was successfully initiated into the athletic curriculum of Lincolnton High School in lfll8 by the painstaking efforts of Coach Smith. The scrappy little team of ringsters fought its way through three hard matches. one with Barium Springs and two with Charlotte. Vv'ith boxing installed as a major sport in the High School. Lincolnton advances to a higher position in the athletic circles of the State. The boys take pride in being the first to fight for the Gold and Black in the roped arena. The prospects are bright for a winning baseball team in l9Z8. because seven letter men are back from the l927 team and are determined to make up on the diamond what they failed to do on the gridiron and on the hardwood. BUSINESS, 5 f K i success in which made knowledge desirable and almost necessary so that it ,A built our great educational systems. BUSINESS which is a result of 'he 'Ml natural effort to acquire property and happiness, which in the early days of our human race was only obtainable th 'ough war and sutfering. Trade civilized the world because it made travel necessary and through travel among other people our travelers founil cut. that others were folks like themselves and made better friends than enemies, and so led to a gradual cessation of wars fought on account of hate. As we know other people, other faiths, other customs better, we like them better. Most of our hate is for strangers and strange customs. Hail! then, to BUSINESS that made acquaintance with others necessary. BUSINESS made it possible for evely man to acquire a measure of human happiness in accordance with his work, and the manufacture oi' articles necessary for trade created jobs fer him to work at. BUSINESS created values. It made fruitful land worth more than barren, and devel- oped barren land on account of the value that could be obtained from it, It made it possible for the farmer to sell his products and buy other things and enjoyments. BUSINESS sets mental values higher than physical, brain above brawn. So BUSINESS makes it possible to pay taxes, build schools and colleges and educate men and women so that they might be happier and succeed easier in BUSINESS. BUSINESS made religions founded on faith and morals possible instead of the religion founded on fear and oppression, because it provided money to support our churches and ministers. It made the prize of successful research in all lines desir- able. We owe it to our modern sciences and arts. BUSINESS always is fair and always rewards. Exceptions are crim- inal and not the usual. Good BUSINESS is a normal conditiong bad BUSINESS is a false condition. BUSINESS is still an undeveloped field poorly explored. New paths must be opened constantly to furnish jobs for new millions of workers. BUSINESS is founded on faith. That faith is symbolized in the word STERLING.
