Congratulations, Dr. Goll and Mr. Crittendon. 7 The Senior Class -----------Principal’s Message------- Time: The Subtle Thief Mr. Crittendon Nothing is as empty as lives filled with consuming loneliness and gnawing regrets about what might have been. The poetry and songs of centuries echo in many ways the human calamity of unfilled hopes and smashed dreams. No such despair characterizes the Class of 1987. Your Class, recognized from the beginning that high school is, in a sense, the last stop of your young years, and your experiences here seem to overflow with friendship, laughter, and the unforgettable gentle pleasure of familiarity. You have respected each other; you have found and cemented lasting relationships; above all, you have enjoyed yourselves, blending academic seriousness with a light sensitive social scene. Milton once called time “The subtle thief of youth.” Do not let this clockwork larceny destroy your zest; life is too short to tamper with the sweetness of moments well lived! 8 Fondly and with best wishes always, H. Teachers went from the classroom to the picket line on Friday, Feb. 26, after negotiations with the Board of Education broke down. The issues were wages and a mandatory career ladder which the teachers felt was being imposed upon them by the administration against their will. Then the school hoard announced its plans to keep four high schools open during the strike, including Lincoln-West, to accommodate the seniors. Principals were to be used as teachers. Many teachers arrived at the school before 6 a.m. to man the picket line. Wood scraps were burned in barrels and hot coffee and tea were poured into cups to warm the marchers. On the first day of the strike, Ken Queencr, a senior, showed up at the school to drop off a homework assignment to his science teacher, Mr. Klimkowicz. “I just want to graduate and get on with my life,” he said. Lady Wolverinas Had Winning Season by Angelo I,cnix Helped by timely hitting and good fielding, the Lady Wolverina Softball team finished the season in second place in the North Senate, behind East High, with an impressive 13-7 record, well above the .500 mark. The season started with a whopping 21-7 victory over West Tech in which the girls scored more than 10 runs in the first inning. John Hay was their second victim, 17-9. Their first loss was to East High, 24-17. Hut they came back to win their next three games, beating Collinwood, (llenville and John Marshall. The season ended in a flurry as the girls whipped John Hay, Collinwood, West Tech and East Tech. We have the ability to beat any team in the North Senate, but softball is an unpredictable game. You can out play a team and still lose,” accord ing to Ms. Zak. the team’s coach. Despite their second place finish, the Lady Wolverinas held their ground and put on a good performance. And things look even better next year. Only one of the starters, Jackie Padilla, is a senior and will not be back. She plans to start Bowling Green University this fall. This gives the team a good nucleus for next year which should be another exciting season. Maybe even a championship. Michalle McKinney and Angelo Lenix. The next photo shows Clifford Wallace as he checks a page proof. Yearbook Staffers Plan, Edit Photos Planning, taking and editing pictures is one of the biggest challenges for a yearbook staff. And the work doesn't stop there. Then they have to arrange the photos into an attractive layout which is the job of each page editor. After that, the captions have to be written identifying the activity and people in the pictures. Finally, the stories and headlines have to be written. This scenario is repeated at least 96 times during the year before the pages are ready for the publisher. All of this has to be done in a specific time frame and according to certain specifications to be sure everything fits the pages of the book. Any mistakes , including missing pictures, copy or captions will delay publication and add to the price of the book which costs more than $6,000. Then the page proofs have to be checked for accuracy to be sure the pictures are properly identified and all the names spelled correctly. The job of yearhook editor is an awesome responsibility, hut. it’s a rewarding experience as well, according to Cindy Dutton, who was assisted by Michelle McKinney. Clifford Wallace, Antwan Nelson and Angelo Lenix, page editors. Their advisor is Mr. Piskos. Special thanks to to Mr. Maxwell who took pictures of the weightlifting competition, boys and girls track, boys baseball and the senior faculty basketball game. Leaving behind the traditional newspaper format, they created a news magazine, the RKD. WHITF. BLUE The magazine provided the students with space to thoroughly discuss a subject, to provide researched material and an opportunity to solicit students for their opinions and ideas. The addition of graphics to the cover allowed for an artistic touch to communicate ideas. Added coverage was given to subjects like drug abuse, teen responsibilities and the problems of students who work and go to school. Next year, a Journalism I class will be added to the curriculum. “Undoubtedly, the Journalism Club and the class will both contribute to the quality of the news magazine, according to Mrs. Hilda, their advisor.
